Artificial Intelligence Writes Avionics Work Orders in Minutes

Laurent Gauthier, who owned Porta Air Service for 12 years before selling the business in July 2024, is an expert in using artificial intelligence from ChatGPT Teams to create avionics work orders in a matter of minutes. Prior to handing the business over to Eike Doden and Alexander Fender, Gauthier was the chief executive officer of European Air Service Group, which operates MRO facilities for business and general aviation aircraft at six locations in Germany. Four of the facilities include avionics repair shops.

Only six months into the effort, Gauthier saw AI write work orders in one or two minutes that typically take an hour for a technician to prepare manually. Because AI employs machine learning, the results improved significantly during the first six months of use. Automation makes fewer typing errors than a human technician. Of course, a shop technician must review the AI-produced work order for accuracy and to assure safety, but what used to take a technician one hour now takes a total of three minutes. More...

A Conversation With Mike Borfitz of Kilroy Aviation

After 13 years at Boeing and 23 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, Mike Borfitz has unique insight into both the needs of manufacturers and the regulatory landscape. Today, he harnesses that expertise to help companies that want approval to produce, manufacture, modify and install parts, accessories, avionics, engines and aircraft.

In 2018, Borfitz joined fellow experts Erich Hopkins and Nick Olmsted to create Kilroy Aviation, which is based at Salisbury Regional Airport in southeast Maryland. While continuing as individual consultants, they sought and, in the first quarter of 2024 received, organization designation authorization from the FAA. The designation allows Kilroy Aviation to essentially act on the FAA’s behalf and speed up the approval process. The company is focused solely on ODA services, requiring clients to handle the engineering side themselves. More...

Flight Testing: Plan, Execute It Right

Your good customer of 10-plus years just upgraded from his Skyhawk to a pressurized Skymaster. He flew it to your shop (after only a handful of hours doing transition training) for a top-to-bottom panel retrofit. You’ve had it in pieces on the floor for the last three months. He’s anxious to fly his new airplane. Should you strap in with him for a shakedown flight?

We know and accept that flying machines come with inherent risks. So does motorcycling and scuba diving. But as aviation maintenance pros, we tend to overlook the real risks that tag along with flying a machine for the first time after major work, not to mention with pilots having eroded skills because of extended downtime.
