October 2024

CELEBRATIONS AND OBSERVANCES
For the sixth year, California proclaims October 14 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In doing so, we reflect on the vibrant cultural diversity, and tenacity, of the Indigenous peoples who now call California home.
In San Diego County, the Kumeyaay referred to as Diegueño by the Spanish, were the original native inhabitants of San Diego County. According to the Viejas Band Kumeyaay Indians, they are Yuman-speaking people of Hokan stock who have lived in the San Diego County region for more than 10,000 years.

Filipino-American Heritage Month
October is Filipino American History Month! The theme this year is “Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience.”
Throughout Filipino American history, there have been instances of struggle, resistance, solidarity, and resilience. Struggle and resistance are defined as the ways that the Filipino American community has persisted through various types of systemic oppression and violence - ranging from discriminatory laws that treated Filipino Americans as second-class citizens to the hate violence Filipino Americans endured because of their race, ethnicity, and other identities.
