As fall settles in and we embrace a new season, Lake Oconee Academy is excited to continue our commitment to success for all students. This season brings fresh opportunities for growth, learning, and achievement across every grade level. We look forward to sharing updates, important events, and initiatives to support our students in reaching their full potential throughout the year.
Highlights from the October 7, 2024, LOABOG meeting are as follows:
Student Recognitions
- Wyatt Imhof, a junior at LOA, was recognized for sports reporting. Wyatt uses weekly stats and interviews to launch a weekly sports column with The Herald Journal.
- Jewell Morrison was recognized for setting two LOA school records in her performance on the SAT and ACT.
Committee Reports

Finance - The August Financials were presented and approved.

Communications/Strategic Planninge board meeting shared milestone math scores and operational plans for the Lower School, Middle School, and High School, which are connected to the overall strategic plan.

Governance - The Governance Committee will be sharing draft policies with all BOG members for review and feedback.
Executive Director’s Report
- Dr. Bowling shared that the LOA High School was named a Gold AP Honor School and received the AP Access award.
- The LOA Instructional Team presented the Milestones Math Performance Data as follows:
- All grade levels and Algebra I students at LOA outperformed the state on Math Milestones
- 71% of LOA’s algebra students earner proficient or distinguished data, surpassing the state’s 46%
- 55% of eighth-grade students were proficient or distinguished learners compared to the state’s 44%
- 59% of seventh graders were proficient or above, compared to the state’s 38%
- 73% of fifth-grade students scored proficient or distinguished as compared to 41%
- In fourth grade, 63% percent of students scored at the proficient or 62% of third graders scored at the proficient or distinguished level, compared to the state’s 45%
- An area of focus in math is the sixth-grade cohort of LOA students. Although they outperformed the state, LOA plans to implement initiatives to increase the number of proficient and distinguished learners.
- Dr. Bowling presented on the differences between Achievement and Growth and explained that the LOA Instructional Leadership Team is establishing progress scorecards at each school level to assess the implementation and effectiveness of the operational plans. Dr. Bowling also shared that NWEA assessments will be an important part of that process.
- The LOA Instructional Leadership Team presented Operational Plans for each level. Operational plans will be posted on LOA’s website in the coming weeks.
- The Director of Technology and Facilities, Jay Cawley, presented information on an information security policy to protect LOA’s digital assets and standards to regulate cybersecurity at LOA.
- The BOG discussed options and will move forward to have an outside agency complete a school safety risk assessment.
- The BOG approved continuing discussions with the Greene County Board of Education regarding potential options for a new middle school at LOA.
