AUTHOR SIMON SPALDING DIVES DEEP INTO THE HISTORY OF

FOOD & DINING ON THE HIGH SEAS

Guest Lecturer Educates and Entertains Conservancy Members

The latest installment of the Conservancy's members-only webinar program, The Allowance List: A Curatorial Conversation Series, brought together Big U supporters and foodies from around the country for a unique lecture by Simon Spalding, acclaimed historian, musician, and author of Food at Sea: Shipboard Cuisine from Ancient to Modern Times.

The special event, which was co-sponsored with the Historic Foodways Society of the Delaware Valley, provided an in-depth look into the food served aboard a range of seagoing vessels, from P&O steamships to the immigrant trade to the golden age of ocean liners. During the program, Spalding shared his research on how developments in ocean liner cuisine reflected changing immigration patterns and shipboard class systems. Spalding also discussed how his work was influenced by noted maritime historian and writer John Maxtone-Graham, the author of "SS United States: Red, White, and Blue Riband, Forever." The Conservancy also shared highlights from its collections relating to food and dining aboard the SS United States and shared an update on its forthcoming digital exhibition.

PROGRESS TOWARD THE SS UNITED STATES' PHILADELPHIA DEPARTURE CONTINUES

As the SS United States Conservancy advances plans for its land-based museum celebrating and commemorating America's Flagship, Okaloosa County is advancing its complex preparations and requirements necessary to move the SS United States from Pier 82 in South Philadelphia. As CBS 3 recently reported, Okaloosa County is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure the safety and smooth passage of America's Flagship to Mobile, Alabama, where reefing preparations will commence.

The ship's move is dependent upon weather conditions, tidal cycles, and many other factors. When a date is set, the Conservancy will share an announcement with as much lead time as possible to ensure our supporters can prepare for and view the ship's departure, as well as follow her journey south. More information will follow in the days and weeks to come.

STORIES FROM AMERICA'S FLAGSHIP CONTINUE TO EXCITE, INSPIRE THE PUBLIC

Delaware Online recently ran two great articles featuring interviews with former passengers who traveled aboard the SS United States. The first, published in late December, and the second, published in early January, both draw from conversations with men and women who were children or teens when they sailed aboard the Big U, so the ship’s massive size appeared all the larger and her grandeur all the grander.
