Murphy-Goode 2022

Pinot Noir (California)

In 1985, the Murphy Goode estate launched the brand with two wines: estate grown Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. Fume Blanc was coined by Iconic USA winemaker Robert Mondavi in 1968 as a nod to the fame of the mineral-rich wines made from Sauvignon Blanc in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé in the Loire Valley of France. Over the years, the varietal name Fume Blanc led to confusion and is better known today by its noble varietal name, Sauvignon Blanc. In the beginning, the Murphy-Goode Vineyard provided the grapes. Over the years, Murphy-Goode Winery steadily increased production, expanding the winery capacity and augmenting the harvest with fruit from the winery’s “grower partners,” local farmers, and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision.

Initially, the partners custom-crushed their grapes at a neighboring winery, where consultant Merry Edwards guided the winemaking. After constructing a modest production facility on Tim Murphy’s Alexander Valley ranch in 1987, they hired Winemaker Christina Benz. Chris made fifteen vintages of Murphy-Goode wine before turning the winemaking over to David Ready Jr. in 2001. Dave’s road to winemaking was a little more circuitous. (There I go, using those big words again.)

Get to Know Our Pinot Noir

Our Pinot Noir is a true reflection of California's diverse coastal terroir, with grapes sourced from the marine-influenced vineyards of Sonoma County to the picturesque hills of Santa Barbara. Each vineyard location benefits from a cool climate, which plays a crucial role in achieving the perfect balance of vibrant dark fruit character and bright acidity.

This careful selection of grapes results in a wine that showcases intense black cherry aromas and flavors, enriched by subtle notes of vanilla from aging in both French and American oak. The complexity of our Pinot Noir invites you to savor each sip, making it an ideal companion for any occasion. Experience the harmony of fruit and oak that defines this exceptional wine.

From the Winemaker, Dave Ready Jr.

Winemaker Dave Ready Jr. truly shines both in the world of wine and beyond. Not only does he craft exceptional wines from California’s finest vineyards, but he also brings the house down with his drumming skills.

As the son of Dave Ready, one of Murphy-Goode’s founders, Dave Jr. grew up immersed in the art of winemaking. His teenage years were spent pursuing a passion for music, playing in local bands in Minneapolis, dreaming of a career as a musician. This dream ultimately led him to California, but it was his love for wine that made him stay.

Dave's journey began with harvests at Murphy-Goode, where he discovered his true calling as a winemaker. His time in the cellar revealed the profound impact that winemaking techniques can have on the final product. Eager to expand his horizons, he ventured to Australia, diving into innovative winemaking methods that would shape his craft. Upon returning to Murphy-Goode, he applied his newfound knowledge as the winery’s Cellarmaster.

In 1997, he stepped up as Assistant Winemaker, and by the next year, he was setting the style for Liar’s Dice and the renowned Murphy-Goode Zinfandels. In 2001, Dave was officially named Winemaker, continuing the legacy of excellence that defines our wines.

This Week's Wine Insider Offer

Murphy-Goode 2022 Pinot Noir (California)

Before tasting the wine we reminded ourselves that this a more affordable red that isn’t really in the same league as most of the samples that we receive. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, we welcomed this lively treat!

The wines simple flavors brought both comfort and familiarity. The herbal liveliness and light bodied style make it fun with chips and dip, nachos or charcuterie. The dominant raspberry tea notes nicely balance the smooth mineral finish. At our regular price of $10.99 this is a good value, but at the offer price of $9.00 and the $3.00 per bottle mail in rebate it makes it a must have for guests and gifts during the holiday season.
