FROM THE RECTOR

Dear People of Saint Paul's,

This Sunday we celebrate the beginning of a new program year and a return to full programming after some ministries paused or altered their work for the summer. The staff and committee/ministry chairs have been planning intensively for months, and we're all excited to start putting the plans for this year into action. Some ministries are coming back fully rested, some are in the process of evolving to meet current needs, and some programs are making their debut (the WEEMS women's group, Called into Being, a new intentionality about accompanying new friends).

You can find all the details, the whats and whens, below and in the new program guide. When there is so much what and when to cover, the why sometimes goes unmentioned. But if we let the "why" slide too far from view, all those wonderful events and programs can easily become another list of obligations, twenty more things to do because we should, or to feel guilty about not managing to do.

Everything we have lined up for this program year is meant to be our free response to the love of God. We worship, learn, serve, give, and build community in response to the great love that has made us who we are and is beckoning us still into more love: deeper friendships, more joyful serving, a deeper sharing. I am thrilled with our plans for this year, and I hope that we all dive fully into the work of the church, beginning this Sunday (and hey, we have bagels!). But let us do so because of love—because God loves us , because we love God, because God helps us, to love each other and our neighbors.

Sunday Forum Beginning August 11

The Epistle of James

Sundays, 9:30 AM, The Berlin Room

Martin Luther famously called the Epistle of James an “epistle of straw” and put it in an appendix to his translation of the Bible. The book has often been overlooked and denigrated since. And yet of all the letters in the New Testament, it may be the closest to the content of Jesus’ teaching ministry. We’ll read it carefully to start the program year, using the most recent scholarship on James to understand it and apply it to our lives today.

Called into Being

Last call to register

Called Into Being is a twelve-session program to help us discern and articulate our own callings (vocations) in the church and the world. Our approach throughout is based on telling, hearing, and joining stories: the stories God is telling in our lives, the church, the world, and at Saint Paul’s. Along the way we’ll touch on some Bible, theology, and methods of prayer, all directly related to our own lives and ministry. With God’s help, this program will empower us to live and practice our faith with confidence and joy. More details here. ASAP Email Eric+ to register.

Lectio at Lunch

Thursdays, 12 Noon, Tyler Hall

Every Thursday in Tyler Hall you’ll find a lunch combo that can’t be beat! We offer a tasty meal with a generous helping of fellowship, plus a lively discussion arising from the Gospel of Mark. We finish promptly at 1:00 PM and invite you to join us as your schedule allows. You may bring your own lunch or share in the meal provided. Donations accepted.

Diocese of Georgia Listening Sessions

for Strategic Planning Process

August 25, 2-4 PM, The River Room

Saint Paul's is host for one of the listening sessions for the Diocese of Georgia's strategic plan. This process is primarily intended to help the people of the Diocese discern how the Holy Spirit is leading us into the future and then naming that shared vision in a clearly defined plan. In asking, “What does fidelity to Jesus look like in this moment?” we can confidently look to the Spirit to guide us into new ways of embodying our living hope.

All Episcopalians are invited to take their share in the counsels of the church and help chart the future of the diocese.

Register for a session

Experience Cursillo

Honey Creek, September 19-22

Want to experience a deeper dive into what following Jesus is like for those of us in the Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement? An upcoming retreat at Honey Creek will offer you a chance to reflect on the life of faith with other Episcopalians from Central and South Georgia.

Cursillo (pronounced ‘kur-see-yo’) is a Spanish word meaning ‘little’ or ‘short course.’ This is the name given to the Short Course in Christianity which first developed after World War II with Roman Catholic men. The short course has now been given to men and women around the world and in the process has assisted generations of Christians to more faithfully follow Jesus in their daily lives. There is no real secret here, just the basics of the faith with an emphasis on how would you like to live it out in your life.

The next Cursillo, #129, will be held at Honey Creek September 19-22.

Andrew Austin, Church of the Good Shepherd, is on the team for Cursillo 129. Email him If you'd like to know more about Cursillo.

New Forward Day by Day has arrived

The new Forward Day by Day issue for August, September, and October has arrived and is available in the Narthex. Forward Day by Day is a booklet of daily, “page-a-day,” inspirational meditations, each reflecting on a specific Bible passage from the daily lectionary readings of the Episcopal Church. The meditations are rich in substance and offer a wide range of witness and experience.
