Swim & Dive Win Catholic League Championship

Fear the Fish! The Marlins won the CHSL Championship with 664.5 points besting the second place team by 318.5 points. Mercy has won the CHSL Swim and Dive championship 57 times dating back to 1960. Read more here. They look to repeat as state champions this weekend at the MHSAA Division 2 State Swim & Dive Championships at Oakland University.

National French Week Chez Mercy

The American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) organized the 22nd annual French

Week which took place in schools, communities and the AATF chapters across the U.S. from November 6-12, 2024. The theme this year was Le Français - La Langue Globale (French - The Global Language).

Mercy French students celebrated all things French throughout the week and invited the whole school to become involved with our Trivia contest of French culture, the Guessing of the number of French chocolate truffles in the jar and listening to French music during class exchange. Prayer was also said in French in the morning and in the afternoon with the coordination and help of Mrs. Becker. Our amazing cafe Chef Mia, Mrs. Anne Hallberg and the cafe team put together a phenomenal menu of choices of authentic foods from the Francophone world which were absolutely délicieux! The students also participated in two other culinary adventures during the week. Many parents chose to dine with their daughters and participated in our annual trip to Cuisine Restaurant (Detroit News Restaurant of the Year). Chef Paul and his team prepared a dinner menu for us, very typical of traditional French cooking. It was such a fun and wonderful event with such wonderful parent participation.

French students participated in an in-school field trip on November 11 to hear about the journey of renowned Chef Jared Grabow, owner of Oak and Reel restaurant in Detroit, to become a renowned Michelin Chef. He spoke to us about his training and experiences from all over the world. Following his presentation, Chef Jared invited the students to make omelettes with him and his wife Abbey. Every student had the chance to sample the perfect omelette. This interactive experience was the highlight of the day and many students went home to reinvent that perfect French omelette!

The students also enjoyed Crepe Day, with a presentation about crêpes which originated in Bretagne, France. We are grateful to Mrs. Gawne and Mrs. Fusco who donated their time to help Madame Campbell to make crêpes.

The week ended with the painting of indigenous flowers in France. The students researched their flower and reported to the class the symbolism and historical significance of France. The activity was supported by Ms. Susan Smith and Mrs. Missy Kreucher with their kind donation of supplies and materials. The students took their water color painting home in a matching frame. What a wonderful souvenir of the week.

Sydney Wilker won the National French Week Tee-shirt contest, voted by faculty, because she best displayed the theme and an aspect of French culture. Lastly, Chizy Nwoke was responsible for decorating the MAC with a table displaying all things French. Thank you for your energy and passion for all things French!

Campbell Flynn Named 2024 Miss Volleyball

Campbell Flynn '25 was crowned the 2024 Miss Volleyball by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association, capping off a remarkable high school career. The announcement, made as a surprise to the star athlete, cements her legacy as one of the most accomplished volleyball players in the state. She ended the season with an impressive stat sheet, including 730 assists, 188 digs, 131 kills, 36 aces, and 52 blocks. Read more here.

Latin Students & Families Experience Detroit Symphony Orchestra

More than 40 Mercy Latin students and parents attended a magnificent performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The music echoed stories from their study of Latin and classical mythology. The performance was not only a musical journey but also a chance to learn more about the stories of the Roman gods, reminding students of the lasting influence of these ancient myths. This unforgettable experience deepened their appreciation for both classical music and the enduring culture of ancient Rome!

Quiz Bowl

This past weekend, the Mercy Quiz Bowl team showcased their knowledge and teamwork at the Grosse Pointe Blank Tournament, competing against some of the best teams in the region. The entire team contributed to Mercy’s success, delivering an outstanding performance during the morning rounds. Their collective efforts earned Mercy a spot in the championship rounds in the afternoon, culminating in an impressive 6th place overall finish.

A special congratulations goes to our captain, Chisom Nwoke ’25, for her stellar individual performance. Chisom scored an incredible 360 points for Mercy and secured 8th place overall in the individual rankings, making her the highest-placing female competitor of the weekend—a remarkable achievement in a highly competitive field.

We are so proud of the team’s accomplishments and their representation of Mercy at such a prestigious tournament. You can view the tournament statistics here.

MISSION & MINISTRY

Foundation Day Mass & Youth Mercy Association Induction

You're invited to Mercy High School for our Foundation Day Mass Thursday, December 12 at 10:15am in the Auditorium. Worship with us as we celebrate the Sisters of Mercy Foundation Day and induct our new Youth Mercy Associates.

THANK YOU MERCY MOTHERS' CLUB

We are grateful to our Mercy Mothers’ Club for the warmth and beauty of the trees they set up and decorated throughout the school! New this year, in partnership with our Mission and Ministry team, we have a Jesse Tree in the Reception Area. A Jesse Tree is a way of preparing for Advent by journeying through the stories on Jesus’ family lineage. There is an ornament on the tree for each day of Advent that refers to a Bible story about someone on Jesus’s family tree.

FEED PEOPLE, NOT LANDFILLS

Student Led Community Outreach

The student run community outreach project Feed People, Not Landfills is offering a Simple Meal Day in the Mercy cafeteria on Tuesday, December 3. A meal of soup and bread will be served for $6, with a portion of proceeds going towards Make Food, Not Waste, a local non-profit that saves food from heading to the trash and makes healthy, nourishing meals for Detroiters in need. Simple Meal Day provides Mercy students an important opportunity to reflect on the options that are usually available to us within the cafeteria, and also the food waste we generate in our everyday decisions. Check out the video here to learn more.

In the spirit of giving, there will also be a cash donation box, as well as a way to donate money via student ID when it is scanned after making a cafe purchase. Students and staff are encouraged to contribute what they can, as it will go towards feeding people in need and combatting the climate crisis.

If there are any questions, please contact student leaders at hope.carmona@mhsmi.org or harshitha.arvapalli@mhsmi.org Follow and interact with the Instagram page at @feed.people.not.landfills to see more updates and learn more about our issues and initiatives. There is also a canned food donation collection at the Birmingham YMCA now until December 6.

THANK YOU for helping us to make a difference one meal at a time!
