What's happening at Hope Nottingham?

November 2024

In this month's issue, we are promoting our 'virtual gifts', celebrating two of our partner churches encouraging support of our food banks this winter.

Giving is the real gift

Dear Dominique,

What do you want for Christmas?

It's a question we might get asked or ask others this time of year. With Christmas adverts in full swing, it can seem like the focus is all about receiving. However, the real gift of Christmas is in the giving; showing kindness and generosity to others - not through obligation but because we care about and love those around us.

Here at Hope we support those experiencing hardship and loneliness. It is your giving - done through love and compassion - enabling this.

Thank you for your continued support.

"You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive' "

Acts 20:35

Give a Gift to Hope Nottingham

Gifts of Hope

Looking for inspiration for gift ideas for family and friends? Want to give a gift that really makes a difference?

Our virtual Gifts of Hope are a great way of supporting the work we do in local communities. Whether covering the cost of a food parcel at one of our 14 food banks or providing a free breakfast for a family in need in our community cafes, your gift directly helps Hope Nottingham provide love, care, compassion and practical help right across Nottingham.

Available at a range of different prices from £5 to £50, all gifts come with a downloadable certificate to give or send to the recipient.

You can find out more and purchase the gifts via our website and we'd love your help in sharing this idea with your contacts.

Our 14 food banks rely on donations from supporters like you to keep their shelves filled. Last year we received over 1700 emergency food parcel referrals across December and January - and we anticipate an equally busy winter this year.

"Without food banks, I don't know what I would do"

We are hugely grateful for your support - both in terms of donations of food and funds. You can donate to Hope Nottingham and download resources to help run a food collection or "reverse advent calendar" using the link below:

Celebrating our Church partners

Eleven of our food banks are hosted by local churches who work in partnership with Hope Nottingham to provide emergency food support to people in their communities and beyond. Working Together is one of core values - and we are ever grateful for the support we receive from each local church that hosts a Hope Nottingham food bank. You can read more about them all here.

This November our friends at the Covenant Restoration Assembly church on Raleigh Street in Nottingham are celebrating their 20 year anniversary. We wish them every blessing as they continue to minister to their local community and look forward to working with them to reopen the Arboretum food bank in the coming months.

Woven St Margaret's Church in Aspley partner with us to host our Aspley food bank. They are holding an Advent Craft Fair on Saturday 30th November to raise money for Cancer Research, as well as our friends at Break The Chains and the Church. Why not pop along and pick up some Christmas gifts?

Local support is music to our ears!

We are truly blessed to receive support from our local communities, whether that be churches, schools, businesses or individuals. We always love hearing about the fantastic events and imaginative ideas that people have to raise money, awareness and food donations for us.

We want to say a huge thank you to the Oxjam Beeston team and everyone who attended this year's Oxjam event. Over £30,000 was raised in total to support both Oxfam and local charities, with 25% of the funds raised being spilt between Hope Nottingham and Middle Street Resource Centre. We were delighted to receive just over £3990 which will help us to continue to support local people in need.

Thanks also to Everyone Can Sing who have kindly made us their Charity of the Year. They are holding a fundraising concert (featuring Jez Barnard, our very own Chair of Trustees!) on Monday 2nd December at West Bridgford Methodist Church at 7pm.

If you or your organisation would like to fundraise for us or tell us about fundraising you are already doing on our behalf, we'd love to hear from you. Please do get in touch.

Advent reflections series

All are welcome to join us at Hope House in Beeston as we reflect on the season of advent and look forward to the joy of the Christmas story:

Tesco Winter Collections

The last week in November marks the annual Tesco Winter Food Collection on 28th to 30th November - a national collection organised by Trussell at Tesco stores across the country. This is a vital opportunity to stock up food bank shelves ready for what is always a very busy time of the year. If you are out and about shopping during this period (or indeed at any other time!) please do think if you are able to donate a couple of items to our in-store collection points. Our lovely volunteer teams would love to see you! And do spread the word to friends, family, neighbours and colleagues! Our in-store volunteers will have shopping lists of which items we need - or you can view one here.

If you miss these collections you can still donate direct to any foodbank. Find our locations and opening hours here. Please, please get any Christmas items in asap - these are often short dated and we need to get them out before Christmas!

Calling all artistic volunteers!

We couldn't do what we do without our fantastic team of volunteers!

Building on the success of our Art & Craft group at our Carlton Hub, we are looking for creative and friendly volunteers to trial a new Art, Craft & Chat Group at Hope House, Beeston on Thursdays 1.30-4.30pm. We anticipate starting in mid-January for an initial period of 8 weeks.

You can find out about more about this and our other current volunteer vacancies on our Volunteering webpage.

Christmas Community meals

Our Carlton Community Hub Christmas Community meals is already fully booked but there are still spaces at our Beeston event on Tuesday 10th December at Hope House.

Pop on your Christmas jumper, join us for a delicious meal cooked by our wonderful volunteers and to get to know others in the community. Why not bring a friend along?

We'd love to see you there! Let us know you are coming in advance by calling on 0303 040 1110 or by email.

Final thoughts...

This month's final thought comes from Lauren Bailey, our Chaplain, who reflects on how God can use our gifts even when times are tough. You can read her reflection here.

Thank you

We love hearing from you - please do call in for a chat or tour of Hope House or Carlton Community Hub or visit our website for more ways to get involved with our work. You can also follow us on Facebook here.
