The Festival of Epiphany | Happy New Year! The festival of Epiphany or Three King’s Day is celebrated around the world in a variety of ways. In Spain, the festival begins with an evening parade and the arrival of the three kings on an elephant, camel and a horse. The three animals represent the beasts of burden that were found on the three continents known at the time the traditions emerged, Europe, Africa and Asia. | In Central Europe people sing carols and walk from house to house marking with chalk on the front door the sign of the star, the numbers of the new year, and the letters CMB. The letters recall the traditional names of the three kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, but they are also an acronym for the Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat: Christ, Bless this House. In France, mothers bake a royal cake with a little toy doll in the center. Whoever finds the toy is the king for the day. My favorite tradition is that of Spain and in Puerto Rico. Children go out on January 5th to find the greenest blades of grass, and they place these in a shoebox or a basket under the bed along with a bowl of water, in the hope that the camels of the three kings will stop at their homes on January 6th, and bring them presents just as they brought gifts to the Christ Child. |
For some the story of Epiphany and the Wise Men may simply read as the final, wistful chapter in the Christmas story. But for me, there is something more. I love Epiphany and I love the star. I love singing loudly and robustly, “We Three Kings of Orient Are” and the “The First Noel.” You see, there is something inviting about the story of the Wise Men that speaks to me. Of course, I love the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, but I must confess I don’t feel a strong connection to the lowly shepherds on the hills of Bethlehem or to the heavenly angels. I do, however, feel a kindred spirit with the Wise Men from the East journeying from afar and using their knowledge to come to Jesus.
| Join us this Sunday, January 5th as we begin the New Year 2025 wandering with the wise men “following yonder star.” | | |

Baptism of Our Lord
Sunday, January 12th
9:30 AM

| |
The First Sunday after Epiphany is traditionally marked as the Baptism of Our Lord. It is the day in which the church remembers Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan. In the yearly retelling of Jesus’ life, it is the shift from the Christmas story to Jesus’ adult ministry. The Baptism of Our Lord also allows us to reflect on the meaning of baptism. In particular, the day allows us to reflect on the sacred gifts and benefits offered at baptism.

Wedding at Cana

It has become a tradition at Lake of the Isles to celebrate Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine as the Wedding at Cana Sunday. In the Syriac Christian Church of the Middle East, the Sunday before the beginning of Lent is marked as Cana Sunday. It is a day to celebrate the gifts of family and food before the penitential season of fasting begins and to be reminded that God’s abundance will be shared again. In the Western Church calendar, this same passage is often read at the beginning of Epiphany season. It is a revelation of Jesus’ divine nature and his first miracle. |
For Lake of the Isles, it is an occasion for celebrating the many couples who have been married in the church. Join us along with the Lake String Quartet to celebrate this special Sunday.

Candlemas
Sunday, February 2nd
9:30 AM
Sanctuary
February 2nd has many names. In popular culture, we refer to it as Ground Hog’s Day. In the church, it has been known as Candlemas, the Festival of the Purification of Mary, and as the Presentation of Our Lord. According to St. Luke’s gospel, the infant Jesus was carried by Mary and Joseph to the Temple in Jerusalem on the 40th day since Jesus’ birth, which is February 2nd. It was during this visit that the old prophet Simeon, who had been assured that he was to see the Messiah before his death, saw the couple and their infant son Jesus walking across the Temple. Having seen the infant Messiah, Simeon took the child into his arms and said:
| |
Now, oh God, I can leave this world in peace- for I have seen my salvation.
He then continued his prophecy with the word that Jesus would be the light for all the world.
This year we will celebrate the Presentation of Our Lord, or Candlemas on Sunday, February 2nd. The Lake String Quartet will perform, as well as accompany the Church Choir.
The Annual Meeting of the Congregation will follow the worship service on
February 2nd at 11:00 AM.

Spanish impressionist composer Turina’s piano trio starts just before the sun comes up and ends as it sets. Jennifer Higdon’s trio evokes two very different moods and colors that are often associated with the sun. Terry Riley’s landmark minimalist quartet was inspired by a conversation with a 7 year-old child of a friend who wondered about how there might be a collector who came around every sunrise and gathered up all the dreams so that they could be redistributed the next day. And finally, one of Haydn’s most famous string quartets called Sunrise will bring the concert to a rousing finish!
Winter Art in Fellowship Hall Continues
Paintings by Former LOTI Member Tom Maakestad
| Mille Lacs Ice Houses, 8"x24" Oil on Canvas | |
Tom Maakestad works with oil paint, oil pastel and dry pastel using regional landscapes as his main focal point. In the early morning or late afternoon, he looks for vast expanses or the complexities formed by merging land masses with light and shadow. Maakestad's color pallet is frequently limited to what he's viewing at that time of year.
The area around his parent’s farm in south central Minnesota has elements that he appreciates about this part of the country: long views from open ridge lines remind him of bus rides from his youth when valley bottoms were shrouded in fog, or sunsets that heighten the landforms and tree rows.
His work is held in many collections including the Mayo Clinic, The US Embassy in Oslo, Norway and the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
Maakestad's art will be for sale and a portion of sales will go to Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church.
