This is our last installment of Tools of the Trade—our on-going theme for the last six weeks. So far we have featured Paper, Brushes, Paint, Gesso and Studio Tools. To complete this theme in this week’s BobBlast, I have selected my favorite drawing tools I use to draw back into a painting.
I like making marks. I will sometimes pull the entire painting together with mark making and brush strokes—along with busy areas and quiet areas, soft edges and hard edges.
Watch the video… I show and talk about my drawing tools plus work on a painting that is in progress! Here are the summaries of the different sections to the video!
Bob’s Favorite Mark Makers
•Permanent Markers
Sharpie—Use the oil-based
Painty Brand—Also oil-based
•Water Soluble Markers
Faber-Castell Pitt Pens—Fine lines, better on surfaces that have not been gessoed or varnish
Stabilo Woody—3-in-1 Water soluble crayon
Lyra Graphite all-Core Crayon—available in watercolor and permanent
Derwent Pencils and Blocks—Ink-based, water soluble, dries with the same intensity as when they were wet
Making Marks Back into a Painting
•Water Soluble marks will bleed when water or more paint is added
•Keep some areas soft with wet-into-wet color and markers
•Keep other areas hard-edged with sections of marker color
•Add markers after your painting has dried
Sealing the Marks
•Bob recommends sealing water soluble markers and charcoal with a casein-based fixative, like SpectraFix
•If you apply varnish with a brush on top of your water soluble markers, your marks will smear
•After the SpectraFix fixative has dried, you can varnish as you normally would
We hope you have enjoyed this series of studio tools! Stay tuned for a new BobBlast next week!
