Tonari Gumi 50th Anniversary Gala Luncheon
Beckoned by the sound of taiko drums, some 260 guests were welcomed into the grand ballroom of the Delta Hotel/Grande Villa Casino in Burnaby to celebrate Tonari Gumi’s 50 years of Community Service on Saturday, October 12, 2024. In contrast with its modest beginnings in the old downtown east side “Japan Town”, the Japanese Community Volunteers Association, which is Tonari Gumi’s official English title, hosted a glittering, fun-filled extravaganza, full of nostalgia and fond memories. True to its Japanese cultural roots, Tonari Gumi paid homage to those who had led the way via a special video, showcasing interviews with its pioneers - Takeo Yamashiro, Michiko Sakata, Motoko Reed, Lurana Kikko Tasaka and Derek Iwanaka, plus a slideshow commemorating its many volunteers through the decades of Tonari Gumi. Both were created by a uniquely talented volunteer, John McCulloch.
This celebration was MC’d by the host of CBC Radio’s North by Northwest, Margaret Gallagher, and the actor and playwright, Tetsuro Shigematsu. Among the special guests who were in attendance were the Honourable Taleeb Noormohamed, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Granville and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Consul General of Japan, Mr. Kohei Maruyama, the Deputy Consul General of Japan, Ms. Satomi Okagaki, Ms. Beverley Pittman of the United Way of British Columbia, Mr. Cary Sakiyama, President of the Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens Association and Ms. Susanne Tabata, President and CEO of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society.

隣組創立50周年記念祝賀昼食会
和太鼓の音に誘われ、2024年10月12日 土曜日、約260名がバーナビーのデルタホテル・グランデヴィラカジノの大宴会場に集い、隣組の５０年にわたる歴史を祝いました。５０年前のダウンタウンイーストサイド・日本人街での小規模な始まりとは対照的に、「日系コミュニティボランティア協会 (隣組 公式英語名称)」は、懐かしい思い出とともに、華やかで楽しいイベントを開催しました。
日本的な文化の伝統を根幹とし、道を切り開いてきた先駆者の方々に敬意を表し、特別なビデオを作成しインタビューを紹介しました。ビデオには、山城猛夫さん、坂田道子さん、リード紀子さん、田坂・ロレーナ・キッコさん、岩中デレックさんのインタビューが含まれ、また、数十年にわたる隣組のボランティア活動を記念したスライドショーも上映されました。今回、この会場で紹介された映像は、ジョン・マカロックさんにより制作されたました。
この祝賀会の司会は、CBCラジオ「North by Northwest」のホストであるマーガレット・ギャラガーさんと、俳優・劇作家の重松徹郎さんが務めました。特別ゲストとしては、バンクーバー・グランビル選挙区の国会議員でありカナダ・ヘリテージ大臣の議会担当秘書を務めるタリード・ヌールモハメッド氏、日本国総領事の丸山浩平氏、ブリティッシュコロンビア州ユナイテッドウェイのビバリー・ピットマン氏、グレーターバンクーバー日系カナダ人市民協会会長のケリー・サキヤマ氏、そして日系カナダ人レガシー協会の会長兼CEOであるスザンヌ・タバタ氏が参加しました。

Chibi Taiko, led by Shinobu Homma, enthralled the audience with a powerful taiko performance. As pointed out by Tetsuro Shigematsu, a successful non-profit organization needs dedicated and generous donors and supporters, and the following were recognized: Mr. Tom Kusumoto as an Outstanding Community Patron, and as major donors, Ken and Junko Shinozaki, Yuko Yasutake, Henry and Yvonne Wakabayashi, Fujiya Japanese Foods, Shinobu Homma, David and Jane Iwaasa, Sumiko Hui, Chuichi and Machiko Nakahori and Saeko Tsuda.
Of course, as a grassroots organization, Tonari Gumi acknowledged the essential support it has received over the past 50 years; both small and large financial donations, in-kind donations and its many volunteers whose contributions have enabled Tonari Gumi to provide its programs and services to the seniors and will enable Tonari Gumi to continue into the future. As emphasized by TG Board Chair, Makiko Suzuki, in her closing remarks, “not only must we honour our past as a grassroots, volunteer organization with warmth and heart, we must also have the skills to help our community navigate the complexities of a society whose ills now include an extremely high cost of living and, for some, a lack of connection with family or friends…Tonari Gumi aims to [support seniors in their own homes, to assist them and their caregivers] and become an information and navigation hub for the Japanese community…”.

祝賀会は、本間忍さん率いる「ちび太鼓」で始まり、迫力ある太鼓演奏で観客を魅了しました。その後、司会・重松徹郎さんの「成功する非営利団体には献身的で寛大な支援者が必要である」との明言に続き、次の方々が紹介されました。コミュニティへの卓越した貢献者としてのトム・クスモトさん、主要寄付者として、篠崎健・順子夫妻、安武祐子さん、若林ヘンリー・イヴォンヌ夫妻、フジヤジャパニーズフード、本間忍さん、岩浅デイビッド・ジェーン夫妻、許澄子さん、中堀忠一・待子夫妻、そして津田佐江子さんが紹介されました。
隣組は草の根の団体として、財政的な寄付、物品の寄付、そして多くのボランティアの支援を５０年間にわたり受け続けることができたことを改めて感謝し、それらがシニア向けのプログラムやサービスを提供し続けるための支えとなっていることを強調しました。隣組理事長である鈴木眞貴子氏は、最後の挨拶で「隣組は、草の根のボランティア組織としての温かさと心を大切にしながらも、複雑な社会問題に対応できる専門的なスキルを備えることが求められています。たとえば、増大する生活費の負担や、家族や友人とのつながりが希薄になっている人々への支援など、現在の課題に取り組んでいます。また、高齢者が可能な限り自宅で快適に暮らせるようサポートするだけでなく、彼らや介護者への支援も行っています。同時に、日系コミュニティのための情報提供と支援のハブとしての役割を果たすことを目指しています。」と、祝賀会を締めくくりました。

Collaboration Classes are on the Way!
Genki Gumi and Tech to Go are collaborating for the “Let’s have Fun learning Technology!” class.
Participants had a fun time learning how to use their devices and explore apps, helping each other along the way.

現在、元気組ではTech To Goとの共同で、元気組参加者向けにTechクラスを開催中です。 バンクーバーをはじめ、各地のクラスでは、「楽しみながらテクノロジーを覚え、使いこなせるようになること」を目指しています。気楽な雰囲気の中、参加者同志でもお互いに教え合いながら、アプリなどの使い方を覚えていただいております。

Jonathan Taylor-Ebanks,
Rugby Canada Visits TG
On September 27th, Rugby Canada’s Jonathan Taylor-Ebanks visited Tonari Gumi to express his thanks for the rugby events held in August for TG members, volunteers, and kids. We shared with him that everyone had a fantastic time engaging with professional rugby athletes, making it a memorable experience filled with fun and learning.
Jonathan also mentioned the possibility of a women's rugby event next year, so please stay tuned for further updates!

9月27日、ラグビーカナダ代表のジョナサン・テイラーイバンクス氏が、8月に開催された隣組メンバー、ボランティア、子供たちが参加したラグビーイベントに感謝の意を伝えるため、隣組を訪れました。参加され方たちからのフィードバックや、プロのラグビー選手たちとの交流は、楽しみと学びがいっぱいの忘れられない思い出となったことを伝えました。

Tonari Gumi at the
National Seniors Day Variety Showcase
On October 1st, Tonari Gumi joined four other nonprofit organizations to celebrate National Seniors Day at the Yaletown Roundhouse Community Center. This new event, the National Seniors Day Variety Showcase, brought together various performances from each participating organization, making it a delightful and engaging afternoon.
In addition to the performances, each organization had a table to showcase their activities and provide information. Tonari Gumi’s Friday Craft team proudly displayed their handmade cards and crafts, attracting much attention and appreciation from attendees.
Representing Tonari Gumi on stage, Shinobu Homma performed a beautiful rendition of the Shakuhachi flute and taiko, captivating the audience with these traditional Japanese sounds. Other performances included group bands and solo singers, offering a vibrant mix of music genres, from jazz and rock to folk and dance, creating a lively and memorable experience for all.
At the end of the event, everyone stood and danced together, adding to the lively atmosphere. The energy was infectious, and it became a moment of shared joy. We are excited to announce that, due to the event's success, we anticipate it will be held at Rogers Arena next year!

隣組がナショナル・シニア・デー・
バラエティー・ショーケースに参加
10月1日、隣組はイエールタウン・ラウンドハウス・コミュニティ・センターにて、他の4つの非営利団体と共にナショナル・シニア・デーを祝いました。この新しいイベント「ナショナル・シニア・デー・バラエティー・ショーケース」では、各団体が様々なパフォーマンスを披露し、楽しく魅力的な午後のひとときを過ごしました。
パフォーマンスだけでなく、各団体はテーブルを設け、それぞれの活動を紹介し、様々な情報を提供していました。隣組の金曜クラフトチームは、手作りのカードやクラフトを誇らしげに展示し、参加者の注目を集めました。
ステージでは、隣組を代表して本間忍さんが尺八と太鼓の美しい演奏を披露し、日本の伝統的な音色で観客を魅了しました。その他、グループ・バンドやソロ・シンガーによるパフォーマンスも行われ、ジャズやロック、フォークやダンスなど、様々なジャンルの音楽がミックスされた賑やかで忘れられない体験となりました。
イベントの最後には、全員が立ち上がって一緒に踊り、賑やかな雰囲気を盛り上げました。活気が満ち溢れ、喜びを分かち合うひとときとなりました。このイベントの成功により、来年はロジャース・アリーナで開催される予定です！

Cindy Mochizuki Film Screening: Between Pictures:
The Lens of Tamio Wakayama (with Japanese subtitles)

We are excited to announce a special screening of Cindy Mochizuki’s highly popular film Between Pictures: The Lens of Tamio Wakayama on Sunday, December 1st.
The film has been a hit at the Powell Street Festival and other venues, with tickets selling out quickly.
This event is a combined gathering for the TG Social Club and TG Outing.
Event Highlights: After the film, there will be a Talkback & Q&A with the director, Cindy Mochizuki.

NOTICE of Temporary Suspension of In-Kind Donations
Starting in October, our facility will begin renovation work on our warehouse and third floor, which will continue into next year. As a result, we will temporarily suspend the acceptance of in-kind donations due to the lack of storage space. Once preparations are complete next year, we will announce the resumption of donation acceptance. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
