We will be taking a Farm Break from December 21st through January 5th

We do not deliver those weeks and there will be no Admin coverage.

Dear Farm Friends,

Recently, a friend suggested that I write a series of vegetable histories. However, I don’t --yet-- know very much of the backstories of these common plants that we work with almost every day. But I can relate a few things I do already know.

The vegetable of the day is the carrot, it’s what the farm crew has been laboring to harvest over the past week. Starting in early spring we seed carrots directly into the fields, and continue planting every couple weeks through August. Throughout the summer, we can harvest your carrots as needed. They like staying in the ground, for awhile. But if left too long, in our wet cold winter soils, they will rot. And various beasts will also take a share of them. Notably geese, who in winter descend on our fields in great flocks, and, amazingly, attack the carrots from their tops downward, leaving scooped out holes with little nubs of carrots in the bottom. So our last couple plantings of carrots are quite large, with the intent to harvest them in bulk in early December, keep them in cold storage, and dole them out through the winter.

Such a common vegetable, it can range from boring, flabby, woody, and bitter to shiny, shatteringly crunchy and sweet. The time window from November through January is when carrots are at their best, so give them some extra attention when you see them in your box. While we do harvest carrots all summer, they don’t like hot weather, and are nowhere near as yummy as the carrots of now.

Our carrots are very popular and I often get asked why they are so good. Like with most

things, it comes down to care. We start by searching for, trialing, and investing in the

best varieties. The modern orange carrot, sweeter and more nutritious than its

predecessors, originated with Dutch breeders in the 12th century, and the best carrot seed

is still produced by Dutch companies. We just spent over $4,000 on carrot seed for 2025.

Then there is the whole careful growing process, with constant attention to soil nutrients

and moisture, weed management (which for carrots could be a whole article in itself),

and of course the timing of every detail. And finally, there is terroir, the particularities of

this unique farm site. Our soil, a somewhat heavy clay loam, can be difficult to cultivate

and is not even classified as class 1 ag soil (it’s class 3!). But as our results show, it has

the potential to grow exceptional vegetables.

Happy crunching,

John Tecklin
