October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month. Relationship violence continues to be a profound and pervasive social and public health crisis that intersects class, race, ethnicity, and sexuality. You are encouraged to wear purple to show support for those who have experienced relationship violence and abuse and let them know that help is available. To support National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, U.S. Vets Outside the Wire would like to screen the movie “Inside Out 2” at Coastline’s Newport Beach Campus! Outside the Wire is a program funded by the Orange County Health Care Agency to support the mental health needs of student veterans in Orange County Colleges. Inside Out 2 is an animated Disney/Pixar PG-Rated film that explores various emotions and feelings through characters on-screen. The movie is enjoyed by adults, teens, and children and has grossed $1.2 Billion at the box office to strong reviews and acclaim from psychologists and movie-goers. To ensure Veteran families with children are still able to attend, Strong Families/Strong Children will provide an activity area for children. This event will be open to all veterans and their families. We hope to see you there!

MESA provides support services for underrepresented students pursuing degrees in calculus-based STEM majors through specialized academic advising, community building, tutoring, supplies, and more! Do you identify as a 1st generation college student? Are you eligible to receive need-based financial aid? Are you looking to transfer to a four-year university for your 1st bachelor's degree? Are you in a calculus-based STEM major at Coastline? If you answered yes to all of these questions, you are eligible to apply to MESA! Spend your money on more than groceries! The Coastline Food Pantry supports students' nutritional needs with both perishable and non-perishable items available free of charge through weekly programming and Food Box pick up. The Coastline Food Pantry does not require an RSVP or reservation. All Coastline students are welcome to utilize the weekly Food Pantry and only need to check in via the Coastline Mobile App. Pick-ups are 11am-1pm on Mondays (Garden Grove Campus), Thursdays (Newport Beach Campus), and the second Tuesday of each month (Westminster-Le Jao Campus). Beth Syverson
Congratulations Beth Syverson, Instructor for the COAST Music Certificate Program, for her significant contributions as an advocate and educator in the areas of adoption and mental health. Beth recently co-authored a book with her son titled Adoption and Suicidality, which delves into the complex intersections of adoption experiences and mental health challenges. In recognition of her expertise, she was also featured on National Public Radio (NPR) to share insights on this critical topic, providing a valuable platform for increasing awareness. In addition, Beth hosts a podcast titled Unraveling Adoption, where she addresses a range of issues related to adoption and mental health. Her dedication to these areas has created invaluable resources for those seeking to deepen their understanding or support others.

Josiah Golojuh
We are excited to spotlight Coastline College faculty member Josiah Golojuh, Professor of English, on the release of his debut novel, The Paper Boy. Josiah holds a Master’s Degree in Screenwriting from USC and is a proud member of the Producers Guild. His short film The Illuminator has been showcased in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. Additionally, Josiah co-founded and programmed the Graphation Film Festival, hosting events in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Seattle, which garnered media attention from CNN and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. His novel, The Paper Boy is a gripping tale of friendship, loss, and the dark secrets that lurk beneath the surface. Daniel’s paper route is his refuge from the harsh realities of growing up. Navigating a neighborhood filled with unique and often troubling characters, he seeks solace in comic books, action figures, and most of all, his imagination.
