SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION | |
SERMON NOTES
Ask. Seek. Knock. This is what Jesus invites us into this week. And when we look around what is happening in the big world and even in our own heart, we know that there are things that we need. Just Jesus invites us to ask of those things from God. Now does this mean that everything that we ask for, we are going to get exactly that? By no means! Jesus shows us that the God of the universe cares about us and will provide good gifts to us. So join us this week as we explore the calling from Jesus to ask what we need, seek out what we need to find, and knock on the door waiting for it to be opened.

MEET THE MOUNTAINS FESTIVAL IN AUGUST
In 2023, we decided to have a booth at the Meet the Mountains festival here in Johnson City. When we started last year, we had a lot of learning to do. Well this year, we are having a booth again. The festival is August 9-10 out at Winged Deer park where we will be passing out information about our church and some local wildflower seeds. All are invited to participate in the festival activities these days, but there are also some volunteer opportunities for us. First is that we need to pack seeds into envelopes and stick our stick of information on them. We will be doing that on Sunday August 4 after worship. There will also be a sign up sheet outside the narthex on a bulletin board for shifts. Not everyone needs to be out in that sun all day both days. Therefore, we will have certain hours of shifts for people to volunteer for. This is another exciting opportunity for us to be Stewards of Creation and share God’s love with God’s people!

WAPC INTERPRETATIONS FOR AUGUST
A Meeting on the Mountain
Next Month: Tuesday, August 5, 2024
The Hebrew and Christian Scriptures begin humanity’s story with God within a garden blossoming atop a mountain so grand, from its rivers all the earth is kept alive. Upon that mountain, our Creator walked with humankind. Within a bush on a later mount,
Creator reclaimed some of our lost intimacy, giving us a name to call: YHWH. In time,
Christ gave humans both ancient and contemporary the first taste of the full
reconciliation to come. Mountains are locales of grounding, meeting, reconciling,
even transcending. Their heights inspire endurance and courage. Their vistas offer
glimpses of unparalleled beauty.

70 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know
By Matthew Richard Schlimm
(221.4/SCH)
The basic message of the Bible can be understood in any language. At the same time, many biblical texts are hard to understand because they don’t quite make sense when translated into English. Something is missing. Quite frequently, what readers miss has been lost in translation. Maybe there is a pun or wordplay in the original. Sometimes names like Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, and Eden just seem like names to us but have meanings that are essential to the story. Many Hebrew words have multiple meanings, but the English translators have to just pick one (for example, the same Hebrew word can mean both hear and obey).
Even more common are Hebrew words that have much wider meanings than their English translations. A few examples are the Hebrew words rendered as remember, covenant, walk, gates, love, cleanliness, holiness, glory, wisdom, and fear. The original language allows various parts to click together like well-constructed puzzle pieces. With Hebrew in mind, interpreters see new details they didn’t realize were missing before. They make new connections. They immerse themselves in scripture more fully.
That’s where this book comes in. Learning a language is like learning a worldview. Those who learn biblical Hebrew can better understand not only what biblical authors wrote, but also how they thought. Unfortunately, those insights come only after years of study. This book is about getting right to the important, exciting insights. It’s an opportunity to be transformed by the renewing of our minds as we better understand how biblical authors used their language to express their experience of God and the world.
If you are just beginning to study Hebrew and want the insights and motivation to continue or if you have no intention of learning biblical Hebrew but want to better understand the Bible, this book is for you!
