San Francisco 49ers vs. Dallas Cowboys:

Good Triumphs Over Evil!

First Half Summary --

The first Quarter ended with the 49ers up 3-0 on a 50 yard FG by Anders Carlson, the Kicker du Jour. The 2nd Quarter saw a 49er goal-line pass interference penalty facilitate a Dallas TD, while a long Purdy to Deebo TD was negated by a penalty. Good defense in the end zone by Mustapha and Winters forced a FG, to keep it 10-3. Isaac Guerendo, in for the injured Jordan Mason, was a sparkplug and, coupled with a pass to George Kittle, led to another 49er FG, for a 10-6 halftime score. There was aggressive play by both teams, but 49er penalties were punitive in nature.

Second Half Summary --

The second half was a classic as George Kittle was awarded the "National Tight End Day" Gold Belt. The YouTube video tells the

whole story, but in sum, San Francisco came out in the second half and dominated, although there was some late minute drama.

Isaac Guerendo, after a 50 yard Brock Purdy run, ran it in for a TD to make it 13-10, SF. Alligator Lenoir intercepted Dak Prescott and Purdy to Kittle quickly made it 20-10. Brock hit Kittle for #85's 500th catch, and Brock would then sneak it in for a TD. (27-10). With Patrick Willis and Frank Gore in attendance (on the foghorn), the players on the field exhibited tenacity in every position. A TD to CeeDee Lamb made it 27-17, so it wasn't over, but Ricky Pearsall ran for 39 yards which led to a 41-yard field goal (let's hear it for Anders Carlson, 5-for-5) and it was 30-17. But suddenly Dak hit CeeDee Lamb three times for 70 yards and a score, and we had a game - 30-24. However, Dak's four passes were incomplete, the 49ers took over and the clock did the rest. Special props are due Ji'Ayir Brown at safety, Nick Bosa, Isaac Guerendo, Ricky Pearsall, Deebo (after pneumonia), and Malik Mustpaha and Dee Winters who made some key stops in the endzone. And for those who have may have jumped off the Brock Purdy bandwagon after last week, y'all better jump back on!

Attn: KNBR Listeners

I tried listening to the START of Mr. T's show today, as I was in the car.

Unbearable, volume-up formula heavy metal music for the first couple of minutes, then the jibberish started.

I can't listen to him. Fortunately, I have a My Mix of YouTube videos or songs. Makes any drive enjoyable, and also blocks dissertations on new craft beer, popular culture and the usual Mr. T drivel, no matter what guest he may have on. As he would say, "It's HAWRIBBLE!"

If there is a decent sports talk show on KNBR, I'll check it out on short trips. Murph and Markus are fine, Greg Papa has cred to go along with the massive ego and can be funny -- and has an incredible memory and offers current news.

Plus, I make sure to avoid the juvenile material with which Mr. T ends each show. (Harmony!) It is unbearable.

Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series

As a Brooklyn Dodger fan, (born in Brooklyn), I must stay loyal to Duke Snider (pictured below), Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges and a true team with players who took the subway together to games, lived in the neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and were bonded together not by huge salaries, but by chemistry and frustration after years of losses to the Yankees in multiple World Series.

The 1955 Dodgers were my team -- I don't know what grade I was in, but I remember every uniform # and probably snuck in a transistor radio or watched it on a b&w television.

There was one NY Yankee fan and one NY Giants fan in my class -- everyone else was Dodger Blue. And we were all sky-high when we FINALLY beat 'em!

Coverage Suggestions For Dave?

The last line of contributor Dave Newhouse’s column -- 10/21/2024 -- Bears’ Foot Disease (https://conta.cc/40e0kAU), reads...“Cal Football. A's baseball. I’ve got to find something positive to write about.”

Question: Who is the highest paid member of the University of California Berkeley faculty? Answer: The football coach. Solution: Maybe if UC gives him a raise, he’ll try harder.

But that cynical comment doesn’t really respond to Dave’s lament. Something positive to write about? Okay, how about this? The WNBA. Ask any woman: those lady hoopsters are mega positive. And that feisty, upstart team trying to keep pro baseball in Oakland, the Oakland Ballers? Now, write about how Dave Stewart, who wants to own a baseball team, (see John Shea’s recent column in the San Francisco Chronicle) and try to convince him to buy the Ballers and take them into the MLB. Boy, that would be a story.

Forget about the A’s and Fisher: they’re gone, and Dave and the Chronicle’s Scott Ostler have made the case that Fisher is a self-serving jerk.

Or for us F1 car racing fans, how about Ferrari, which has been a mid-field runner for years, clawing its way back to the front of the international grid and winning its first U.S. Grand Prix since 2018 last Sunday in Austin. Given how awful the mainstream news is these days, some positive distractions would be nice. Just sayin.’

Deep Bench Definition: Golden State Warriors

Thank you AI: "Deep Bench is a sports term. It means that when one team is playing on the court, there are many substitutes sitting on the bench. They can be called on to play anytime. They are not inferior players. They are equally skilled!"

In the Dubs first contests of the season, vs. Portland and Utah, every player on the roster has been called upon to contribute, and they have all excelled as the Dubs have left Rip City and the Jazz in the dust. The new faces have fit right in and obviously enjoy their roles, and their status, as members of the Golden State Warriors. DUBS: Lookin' good!

Cal Bears 44

Oregon State Beavers 7

Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, CA

Saturday, October 26, 2024

The Golden Bears squared off against a well-known opponent, the Oregon State University Beavers, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Cal would flip the script for the mid-season, non-conference game and break a run of wrenching losses with a 44-7 win. Special teams came out on fire at the start, holding the Beavers to poor field position. Above, inside linebacker Hunter Barth (#31, pictured on the ground, right) put his helmet on the ball, knocking it loose from Beavers wide receiver Zachary Card (#12). Defensive back Cam Sidney (#20) would recover deep in Beaver territory. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

After catching a pass, Cal's running back Jaivian Thomas (#25, tackled on the ground), would lateral back to trailing quarterback Fernando Mendoza (#15) who would travel 15 yards for the Golden Bears' first score early in the first quarter.

Team co-captain and senior Craig Woodson (#2) intercepts a pass, killing another Beaver drive early in the second quarter.

Cal sophomore Mikey Matthews (#8) catches a pass on a

two-point conversion in the second quarter and would end up with six catches for 28 yards in the game.

Midway through the third quarter and scrambling in the backfield, quarterback Fernando Mendoza (#15) dumps the ball to running back Jaydn Ott (#1). Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Dog pile-on-the-ball was the Cal defensive mantra all game, as the Golden Bears would hold the OSU offense to only 200 yards. Here from the bottom of the pile going up, Aidan Keanaaina (#47), Cheikhsaliou Fall (#17), Akili Calhoun (#95), Hunter Barth (#31), Miles Williams (#4) and Nohl Williams (#3) would all combine for the tackle. In only his second game kicking field goals, Derek Morris (#99) lines up for one of his five field goals (33, 46, 19, 25 and 38 yards) he would make in the game. To view a photo album, visit our Facebook Page or visit www.ultimatesportsguide.net.

Stanford Affirmation!

An Academic

Descent; Look

Who's Teaching

by Dave Newhouse

It will come as a huge surprise, and an even greater shock, that I’m teaching a class at Stanford, when I didn’t even have the grades to attend classes at Stanford. This turnabout could cause a faculty uprising, let alone a student protest.

But it’s true. I’m now a professor — please use your imagination — at this highly academic institution. Well -- keep imagining — I’m a co-professor with my more scholarly co-author Andy Dolich.

How did I pull this off? I wasn’t involved exactly, for it was Andy who arranged this autumn class, which is worth a single unit for the — listen to this — nearly 70 students who’ve signed up!

The class is titled Winning and Wanderlust: The History of the Oakland Athletics, a spinoff of the Goodbye, Oakland book that Andy and I wrote in hardback, with a softcover version coming out in 2025.

Authors Dave Newhouse (left) and Andy Dolich display their best selling book which will be released again shortly,

this time in softcover

This scheduled Tuesday evening class will be presented in a six-week installment, the first class taking place last week with Andy and I explaining Oakland’s sports history, which has fallen, in gasoline terms, from a full tank to empty.

Our course, with a week off on Nov. 26, is just enough time for me to slip in and out of my pseudo professor role before the true Stanford faculty causes an uprising at my campus inclusion.

For you see that in my 1956 graduating class at Menlo-Atherton High School, from which 17 of my classmates were accepted at Stanford, I finished 211th among 365 in our class. A Stanford acceptance? My next step was junior college.

There, I’ve revealed my academic shortcomings, though too late for those who paid a goodly sum to attend our Stanford class live online via Zoom. This way, I don’t have to show my face on campus, fraudulently, to the campus police.

Our nightly students (6-7:50 p.m.) will be glad to know that I, the pseudo professor, will have a small representation in the class. Starting this week, we have invited expert observers of Oakland’s rise and decline athletically to present their views.

Mark Purdy

Ted Robinson

Brodie Brazil

Dave Stewart

Scott Ostler

Ignacio De La

Fuente

This Tuesday, former celebrated San Jose Mercury-News sports columnist Mark Purdy and versatile sports communicator Ted Robinson will join our show. Next week it will be local television sports personality Brodie Brazil, followed a week later by one-time A’s pitching great Dave Stewart and nationally recognized sports journalist Tim Keown.

Then on Nov. 19, popular San Francisco Chronicle sports columnist Scott Ostler and quotable former Oakland City councilman and mayoral candidate Ignacio De La Fuente will team up. On Dec. 3, sports economist Matt Levine and local electronic sports personality J.R. Stone will participate.

Matt Levine

J.R. Stone

Tim Keown

That’s quite a diversified lineup to present a complete picture of Oakland's sports scene past and present. I’m sure these speakers all had higher grade point averages in school than yours truly, but they were nice enough to join us anyway.

OK, before I’m thrown off the show, I do have a college degree, from San Jose State, so maybe I can stay for the duration of the class. And I’ve been a strong follower of Stanford for years, from pedaling over as a Menlo Park kid to watch Stanford football and baseball games, a relationship I’ve kept up in adulthood as a journalist and author, even though I had my bike stolen at a Stanford football game in 1950.

Maybe, then, the Stanford community will have pity on this pseudo professor. Hey, it’s only a one-unit course, not some five-unit class on nuclear physics.

Andy and I will moderate the five remaining classes, so I won’t be heard as much from as our opening introductory class. However, as an octogenarian, it’s wonderful joining the Stanford “faculty,” which, hopefully, won’t resign in mass anger.

Fernando Valenzuela

Fernando Valenzuela, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitches against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park on Oct 3, 1982 at the height of “Fernandomania.” Valenzuela passed away on

October 22, 2024 at age 63. (AP file photo)

Remembering

Fernando Valenzuela

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Fernando Valenzuela died

at the age of 63. Fernando was ill. He pitched for 17 years and in 1981 won the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award in the National League. He was most recently doing commentary for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Spanish.

Fernando and the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees during that 1981 season. Last Friday the Dodgers hosted the 2024 World Series against the Yankees for the 12th time in the history of both franchises, more than any other two teams.

Anecdote: In 1981, during a Dodgers visit to Candlestick Park to play the Giants, San Francisco Examiner writer Wells Twombly asked me to interpret an interview he would conduct with Fernando Valenzuela. At the time, teams (unlike today) did not have designated interpreters in Spanish or Japanese.

Twombly was a veteran reporter during the years of other writers who covered the Giants, such as Bob Stevens, Harry Jupiter, and Art Spander. The interview with Fernando was featured the next day in the San Francisco Examiner, the afternoon paper of San Francisco. It was a success, and Fernando told me later that it was one of the first interviews he had enjoyed outside of Los Angeles.

Anecdote: In 1981 Fernando Valenzuela became the best and most famous player in the major leagues ever to be born in Mexico. On the days he pitched, millions in Mexico listened on the radio or watched on television, just like Japanese Dodgers' mega-star Shohei Ohtani. When he plays, millions follow him in Japan, where baseball is king.

Anecdote: Before 1981 my good friend and Spanish broadcaster of the Dodgers Jaime Jarrin told me, “We need a Mexican-born star with the Dodgers.” A few years later Jarrin’s wishes became a reality with the arrival of “El Yaqui de Sonora.”

Anecdote: Fernando told me during an interview that in 1979 he learned his signature pitch, the screwball, from then Dodgers' pitcher Bobby Castillo, who at the time was injured. Fernando learned how to throw his famous pitch which he used in the minors and then when he was brought up to the big team in ’81.

Fernando was a true legend of the game. His simplicity but tremendous magnetism was responsible for increasing attendance at Dodgers Stadium. When he pitched, it was either a sellout or close to a sellout.

Last Friday the Dodgers hosted the first game of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees. I expected every Dodger player to wear a Number 34 on their sleeves. My most sincere sympathy to Fernando’s family as well as Pepe Iniguez and José Mota, who are going to miss Fernando’s smile and great attitude inside their Spanish radio booth.

Note: Baseball has lost three great players during the past few weeks: Pete Rose, Luis Tiant, and now Fernando Valenzuela.

Descansa en Paz Fernando – Rest in Peace Fernando. Nunca se nos olvidará Fernandomania.

68 fan investors applied to be a board member for the

Oakland Ballers

(Oakland, California)-- In a groundbreaking move to redefine the relationship between sports teams and their fans, the Oakland Ballers have received 68 applications from their fan investors hoping to sit on the team’s corporate board. This initiative marks a historic first for a U.S.-based sports team: a truly fan-centric ownership model.

All 2,000+ dedicated fans who participated in the team’s crowdfunding campaign were invited to apply for the board position.

“We believe the process we’ve charted for choosing a fan investor Board Member truly embodies the spirit of Oakland - people coming together to show the world that there’s a different way to do things. It is the only way the team can be a long term success in the Town” - Bryan Carmel, co-founder of the Oakland Ballers.

“Ownership should be a shared experience and we are proud to show a new way for how teams operate. The power is in the hands of our fans - I am excited to see who they pick!” –Paul Freedman, co-founder of the Oakland Ballers.

The Oakland Ballers staff will narrow the candidates for fan investors to ultimately vote on their top choice. The top two candidates after a fan investor vote will be invited to participate in a Board Election Town Hall in early December where they will share a short speech and respond to fan questions. After that, fan owners will have the ultimate power- 48 hours to vote on which of the two candidates they want to be the representative.

Roots Concede Four First Half Goals, Fall 0-5 at Home to Birmingham Legion FC in Regular Season Finale

It was a night to forget for Oakland. After conceding four first half goals to visiting Birmingham Legion FC, Roots gave up another late, conceding five or more goals for a fourth time in a single season.

Oakland looked fit through the first 20 minutes of play, putting pressure on the Birmingham defense and generating some early scoring chances.

But it was Legion with the first goal of the contest at the 21st minute mark when Birmingham’s Preston Tabortetaka hit a gorgeous strike from outside the Oakland area that bent into the top left corner of the goal, beating netminder Tim Syrel to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later in the 31st minute of the match, Legion struck again, doubling their lead on a counterattack which caught Syrel far out of position. Birmingham’s Stefano Pinho capitalized on the mistake, lobbing in a shot from near midfield that dropped in over Oakland’s keeper to make it 2-0.

Just moments later in the 35th minute, Birmingham added a third when Legion’s Matthew Corcoran found Diba Nwegbo on a set piece. Nwegbo redirected the service with a header that found an opening to make it 3-0.

Legion scored yet another just five minutes later in the 40th minute of the match, this time a heat check shot from distance taken by Tabortetaka to earn him a brace. The shot was mishandled by Syrel and trickled into the net to give BHM a 4-0 lead in the first half.

Roots looked relatively better on defense throughout much of the second half, but Legion weren’t done scoring yet. In the 87th minute Birmingham got their fifth after a ball played by Enzo Martinez via a throw-in was dribbled towards the top of the Oakland box and sent towards the net. Syrel looked as though he thought the play was dead, or that the ball would miss the target, as he stood motionless while the ball whirred into the twine to give the visitors a 5-0 lead.

Oakland will now prepare for the 2024 USL Championship playoffs having locked in their position as the No. 7 seed in the West. Roots will begin their postseason slate on Saturday, Nov. 2nd, heading to Colorado Springs to face the No. 2 seed Switchbacks in the first round.

The Warriors and Bay FC --

Both Going Through the

Same Process

by Howard Pearlstein

This time of year is turnaround time for professional sports, end of season, pre-season, early season. I have been more interested in what the women of Bay FC soccer were doing than the Niners and Dubs.

Bay FC’s first year was a learning experience for me, not only as a newbie to the sport. It has been fascinating to watch coach Albertin Montoya change his matrix of tactical experimentation as needed from week to week, revealing the team’s strengths, flaws and aspirations. It was also instructive to me as a writer and a person, since revisions and adjustments for the better, major or minor, never actually end – not for them, not for me, not for anyone.

I realized that what Coach Montoya has been doing week after week, is more or less the same thing Steve Kerr made clear he was doing with the Warriors during pre-season. With so many players new to the team, he needed to see who played best with whom, which combinations worked best. This was in pursuit of developing his ideal team, in which any player or players, whether starter or bench, can be brought in according to the situation and abilities needed, and still maintain the quality of team play. In other words, Kerr’s ideal was two first teams. Stats on the first two games of the season, both record-breaking wins, showed that might be what’s happening. The Dubs’ bench doubled (or more) the points scored by the opponents’ bench.

Soccer and basketball have integral similarities despite their differences. Soccer has eleven players on the pitch at a time while basketball has only five on the court. Soccer is a ninety-minute game, two forty-five minute halves plus minutes added for play stopped by injury or penalty or whatever. Basketball is forty-eight minutes: four quarters, twelve minutes each. Soccer goals can be one or two or none per game and each goal is one point.

Basketball, forty or fifty scores or more per team, each score one or two or three points, depending. Soccer can end with a tie. A tie in basketball demands overtime(s).

The similarities? Both games rely on passing and assists, meaning players are doing both offense and defense at all times. Players need to be aware of the other players, knowing where they are and which way this player or that one is moving.

The more games and minutes played together, the more likely it is for players to develop that necessary intuitive sense of each other. Trace Jackson-Davis described it this way, interviewed the other night after beating Utah: “Knowing what the other guy is going to do.”

Bay FC’s progress has been remarkable getting to that level, having overcome being hampered by the Olympics taking several top players away for a month in the middle of the season. That makes having gotten above the qualifying line for the playoffs in their first year a very big thing. (Next Saturday’s game decides if they stay there.)

But unlike the Dubs whose fans demand winning it all, Bay FC’s fans would be shocked and delighted by that but don’t expect it. Not this first year. Watching them develop independent players into an interdependent cohesiveness (i.e., a genuine team) this first year has been fun to watch. Maybe next year.

And the Niners? They’ve been decimated by injuries, leaving wreckage like the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake. We’re hoping they can rebuild, that maybe more of the mojo that put Rick Pearsall on the field can still be around.

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 103: AJ Dybantsa Getting Upwards Of $4.5 Million May Be A Bargain

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

Multiple sources told On3 Sports that top basketball recruit AJ Dybantsa is expected to receive an NIL package between $3 million and $4 million in exchange for his commitment to play for a college team for a year.

However, a source close to BYU also told the media outlet that BYU supporters are prepared to pay as much as $4.5 million to secure Dybantsa for a season, assuming he is off to the NBA immediately thereafter.

Reading through comments, I noted people saying that $4 million for one year is wild and that the system is out of control.

But is it wild? Would Dybantsa earning as much as $4.5 million to play for 1 season be as wild as some think it is?

He's projected to be the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Cody Williams, who happened to be selected by the Utah Jazz, will earn a base salary of $5,469,120 for his first year. That's significantly more than what Dybantsa is projected to receive even though Dybantsa is likely to have a much greater immediate impact on his team than Williams will for the Jazz.

“This is a monumental honor for the many participants who bring their historic cars to race, our sponsors who annually support the event, and our many volunteers, Advisory Council members and the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca team who pour their passion into ensuring the event’s success,” commented John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It is particularly rewarding as the Rolex Reunion signaled the official transfer from the County of Monterey to Friends of Laguna Seca, a non-profit organization that is entrusted in taking this iconic circuit to a heightened new level that has never been seen before.”

The centerpiece of the paddock was an incredible display of 29 race cars representing the past marques over 50 years. This carefully curated collection, that will likely never be seen together again, attracted consistent crowds of enthusiasts, families and journalists who enjoyed these moments in history.

Historic racing in Monterey began in 1974 with just 66 cars for a one-day race as a complement to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Founded by Steven Earle, the Monterey Historic Automobile Races became the standard bearer for all major historic race events that followed. Rebranded as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in 2010 and under new ownership, the event now accepts approximately 400 entries and continues to uphold the same strict authenticity, period history and car preparation, and driving standards.

Bears Top Cardinals For First

ACC Win, 2-1

Onstead Captures 300th Career Win

BERKELEY, Calif. – The California field hockey team (7-7) defeated Louisville (5-11), 2-1, on Friday at Underhill Field in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears made history after achieving their first-ever ACC win, while Shellie Onstead notched her 300th career win as a head coach.

"Our defense had to step up and dig in. I felt like we were giving them too many opportunities with unforced turnovers," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "We are going to celebrate this by getting ready to beat Wake Forest and keep this momentum going to try to get into the ACC tournament. That's our main focus."

The Bears found success early after scoring two goals in the opening period. Freshman Liz Klompmaker ended her scoreless streak by capitalizing on a penalty corner within the first four minutes of the game. Freshman Pauline Lingnau and graduate student Canisha van Duyn assisted on the play. Klompmaker wasn't finished as she earned her second goal of the night and 13th of the season nearly four minutes later to give Cal the 2-0 lead. In the frame, the Bears outshot the Cardinals (11-0) and held the advantage in corners (5-0).

USF Dons

Dons Hang On, Secure Crucial Victory over Lions

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Picking up a crucial win in their chase for a conference championship, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (5-5-3, 3-0-1 WCC) hung on to take down LMU (5-5-3, 2-1-1 WCC), 2-1, at Sullivan Field on Saturday night to remain unbeaten in WCC play.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • With each side playing tough in the opening minutes of the match, San Francisco fired their first shot of the evening at 9:19 when Gabriel Bracken Serra logged his first attempt on goal, but the midfielder was denied by LMU goalkeeper Ky Mani Dade.
  • Continuing their pressure in the following seconds, Brayden Beason and Isaiah Easley each recorded a shot attempt before the Dons capitalized on a corner kick. With Reid Roberts taking the corner for the green and gold, the junior made a strong pass into the box, where Joe Core then punched home his second goal of the season at 9:44 to put San Francisco in front, 1-0.
  • As the first half played on, the Dons kept their offense flowing as Adrian Medina and Beason tallied more shots for San Francisco. In the 33rd minute, Isaiah Easley drove down the pitch on the attack before the forward was fouled in the box, which ultimately set up a penalty kick opportunity for Gabriel Bracken Serra. Coverting to double up the Lions, Bracken Serra rocketed his third goal of the year past the opposing keeper to make it 2-0 in favor of the green and gold.
  • Closing the half, Beason and Roberts would attack the LMU goal in search of a third goal, but each would be unlucky. Heading into the locker room, San Francisco maintained their two-goal advantage (2-0).
  • Coming out of the locker room, the Dons remained steady as Rylan Smith and Olivier Sylvain, who appeared in his first match since Oct. 9, fired shots against the Lions. In the 79th minute, LMU would cut their deficit in half as Hakeem Morgan converted on a penalty kick to bring the Lions closer, 2-1.
  • Despite play getting a bit chippy down the stretch, Beason continued to push offensively as he tallied another shot at 82:35. Although LMU would possess the ball on their side of the field in the final moments, San Francisco got the defensive stops they needed late to hold on and take down the Lions, 2-1, to secure its first win in Los Angeles since 2010.

University of Pacific Tigers

Huge Final Day Leads to First-Place Finish for Tigers & Astiazaran at Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship

SEASIDE, Calif. - With a 13-under par on the final day, the Pacific men's golf program rose three spots to claim first place on the final round of the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship, hosted by Saint Mary's and Seattle at Bayonet Golf Club.

It was the team's second tournament victory of the season after shooting an 855 (-9) over three rounds. Sophomore Carlos Astiazaran claimed the individual title, his first of his career after he steadied the course with an eight-under-par across the three days.

"It was a total team effort all throughout the week," head coach John Cook said. "Carlos' play all week was phenomenal. Yesterday's 71 was really special under those conditions. Getting that first win is something he had really been striving for the last year and a half. I'm very proud of him and the team."

Astiazaran sat comfortably after round two in second place but moved up to the top spot individually after shooting a three-under-par in the final round. Astiazaran, who led Pacific last season with his 71.4 stroke average as a freshman, secured his first individual championship and his third top ten finish this year.

Astiazaran joins junior Travis Robbie as a Tiger individual champion this season. Robbie earned his first-place nod last week at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

First Place Aggies Slam Door

On Anteaters

Location: Irvine, Calif. (Bren Events Center)

Records: UC Davis 13-5 (8-1), UC Irvine 11-9 (5-4)

The short story:

After dropping the first set, UC Davis volleyball showed its Aggie Pride, out hitting and out blocking UC Irvine over the next four sets to knock off yet another Big West opponent, solidifying the Aggies position at the top of the conference.

FIRST SERVE

  • Senior opposite hitter Olivia Utterback had her third 20 kill match of the season, and her second against the Big West. Utterback finished with 20 kills on a scorching .500 hitting, digging 10 balls to go along with three blocks
  • Junior outside hitter Jade Light had second-straight match with 17 kills, hitting .318, digging five balls and getting three blocks
  • Sophomore setter Mia Starr set 45 Aggie kills, digging 14 balls and blocking three shots
  • Sophomore middle blocker Ally Chandler finished with a team-high six blocks, her second-straight match with six blocks. Chandler also hit .294, adding eight kills
  • UC Davis held UC Irvine to under .200 hitting in each of the final three sets

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Irvine used a run in the middle of the opening set to pull away from UC Davis, taking the first set 25-18
  • It was the last set the Anteaters would win for the rest of the evening
  • Things were close throughout the second set, with UC Irvine leading as late as 23-22, but the last three points would be Aggie points
  • Following an Anteater attack error on what would have been set point, Utterback put the Ags on set point with a kill
  • Junior outside hitter Victoria Vanos then wrapped up the set, smashing home the set winning kill to lock up a 25-23 Aggie set win to tie the overall match up
  • UC Davis built out a lead through the third set, sitting at 23-17 late in the action
  • The Anteaters kept the set alive, snagging a few points late. But Chandler smashed home a pair of kills, on assists from Starr, to lock up the final pair of points UC Davis needed to take a 25-20 third set win and a 2-1 lead in the match
  • An early run by the Aggies put the final touches on the UC Irvine motivation to stay in the action, and when the Anteaters attempted to get within under five points at 18-14, junior setter Haden Bones served up an ace, holding serve for three-straight points as UC Davis pulled away to 22-14
  • Kills from Utterback and Vanos put the Aggies on match point. And after a UC Irvine attack error, the Aggies celebrated a 25-17 fourth-set win.
  • With the comeback finished, the Aggies wrapped up the 3-1 Big West victory

Cal State University East Bay Pioneers

Pioneer Men's Soccer Mounts

Fierce Comeback to Tie No. 3

Cal State LA, 3-3

LOS ANGELES - On Friday evening, the Cal State East Bay men's soccer team fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-3 draw against No. 3 ranked Cal State LA at University Stadium.

The Pioneers found themselves in an early hole as the Golden Eagles struck twice in quick succession. Oscar Warne opened the scoring for Cal State LA in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on a long pass from Andrew Portis. Just over two minutes later, Joel Green doubled the host's advantage.

The game's momentum shifted dramatically in the 29th minute when a red card was issued to Cal State LA. Not only did this reduce the Golden Eagles to 10 players on the field, but it also awarded East Bay a penalty kick. Alan Gutierrez stepped up and confidently converted, breathing new life into the Pioneers' efforts.

Despite the player advantage, East Bay faced another setback when Marlon Radel extended Cal State LA's lead to 3-1 in the 36th minute.

However, the Pioneers made a late push. The resurgence began in the 81st minute when Landon Raftery headed home a precise crossing pass from Pablo Almontes, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

Just over two minutes later, Almontes found Gutierrez to combine for the equalizer. Almontes delivered another pinpoint cross, finding Gutierrez on the right side of the net. The forward's header found its mark, leveling the score at 3-3 and completing the improbable comeback.

The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series.
