Acres of Potential: How NASA Acres Works to Bring Satellite Imagery to the Agriculture Industry

Michael Humber, Deputy Director of our sister consortium, NASA Acres, and NASA Harvest's Data Systems Lead, spoke with Via Satellite's On Orbit podcast about how NASA Acres is working to build trust and bridge the gap for greater adoption of satellite imagery within the agriculture industry.

Dr. Humber explains that one of the most vital parts of developing EO tools for agriculture is creating partnerships and trust with farmers on the ground. NASA Acres recently surveyed over a 1,000 farmers across the United States to learn how they view agricultural data privacy.

Furthermore, Dr. Humber discusses the results of that survey, how it can help increase the adoption of agricultural technologies, and why NASA as a whole highly values data transparency.

NASA Harvest News

NASA Harvest at AGU 2024

NASA Harvest and our sister consortium, NASA Acres, have teamed up to jointly convene a session at the 2024 AGU Fall Meeting in Washington D.C. Our session will showcase how Earth observations are revolutionizing agriculture and food security across the globe. Visit our website to find detailed information on NASA Harvest and other agriculture-affiliated presentations, including those in a wide variety of different sessions throughout the week.

Climate Smart Coffee in Central Kenya

NASA Harvest has partnered with Sprout, Inc to launch a novel insurance product and program in Kenya, called Climate Smart Coffee, with the goal of protecting smallholder coffee farmers from the impacts of climate change with novel climate tools.

NASA Harvest Showcases Research at Global Conferences

Members of the NASA Harvest consortium recently embarked on a productive trip to the United Kingdom and Spain, where they presented the consortium's latest research findings at international conferences.

Scientists Get Ahead of South Sudan Floods Using EO Data

USAID’s FEWSNET scientists at the USGS and NASA have recently developed a novel approach to forecast floods several months in advance. In May 2024, models predicted severe flooding in South Sudan from June through November.

These advanced prediction models allow policymakers to better plan for potential disruptions to local agriculture, livelihoods, and food security.
