FORESTER FIELD WORKSHOPS

Balancing Act: Goats, Forests, and Invasive Plant Management

As a forester, how do you write forest management plans that include controlling invasive plant species without the use of chemicals or heavy equipment? Explore the challenges and opportunities of using goats to control unwanted woody and invasive plants in urban, suburban, and rural locations. In this professional development workshop, participants will have the opportunity to experience how and why the City of Wausau is using goats in Barker-Stewart Island Park.

When: July 11, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Where: Wausau, Wis.

Fee: $35.

Registration Deadline: July 8.

Continuing Education: We are seeking pre-approval for continuing education credits through SAF, Wisconsin DNR, and Wisconsin SFI.

Managing Forests for Maple Syrup

Writing forest management plans and managing forests for maple syrup production presents its own unique challenges. The sentiment that you “don’t cut sugar maple” could use some critical thinking and review. In this workshop, we will review general maple syrup production, discuss state and federal policies regarding sugarbush management, and explore timber marking for sugar maple stand improvement.

When: Sept. 25, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Where: Tomahawk, Wis.

Registration: Registration opens soon.

Continuing Education: This workshop will be pre-approved for SAF CFEs, Wisconsin DNR Cooperating Forester CEUs, and Wisconsin SFI CEUs.

Green, Red, Dead

If foresters have a super-power, it might just be the power of observation. They notice change in the forest and correlate facts that would otherwise be isolated and missed. As a result, foresters have the unique ability to adapt and find management solutions in a changing environment. In this episode of SilviCast, we explore an example in Iowa of changing environmental conditions, their cumulative effects on white oak (Quercus alba), and one forester’s quest to find answers. Join our conversation with Iowa DNR forester Joe Herring, as we try to solve the mystery of the dying white oak trees.
