The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

As you settle into the fall semester, we encourage you to keep the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in mind when handling student information.

FERPA governs the disclosure and access of education records maintained by the University. Generally, school officials may not access or disclose personally identifiable information from a student’s education record without prior written consent. See the definitions for these terms in UConn's FERPA Policy.

When prior written consent has been provided by the student, or when accessing or disclosing information from a student's education record is a necessary part of your job duties, it's essential you handle the information securely.
