Luke 10:25-37 (The First Nations Version)

A SLY SCROLL KEEPER SETS A TRAP

A scroll keeper, one who was skilled in his knowledge of tribal law, came to Creator Sets Free (Jesus) to test him and trap him in his words. “Wisdomkeeper,” he said. “What path must I walk to have the life of the world to come that never fades away, full of beauty and harmony?” He answered him, “What is written in our tribal law about this? Tell me, how do you see it?” The scroll keeper spoke from the words of the law, “You must love the Great Spirit from deep within, with the strength of your arms, the thoughts of your mind, and the courage of your heart, and you must love your fellow human beings in the same way you love yourselves.” “You have answered well,” Creator Sets Free (Jesus) said back to him. “If you walk this path, you will live.” But the scroll keeper, wanting to look good to others, asked him, “Who are my fellow human beings?”

HE TURNS THE TRAP WITH A STORY

Creator Sets Free (Jesus) answered him with a story. “There was a man walking the road from Village of Peace (Jerusalem) to Moon Village (Jericho). On the way, he was attacked by thieves, who beat him, stripped him of his clothes, and left him bleeding to death. “Now it happened that a holy man was on the same road, not far behind. When he saw the man, he went around him on the other side of the road. Not far behind him was another man, also from the tribe holy men are chosen from. When he saw the wounded man, he did the same thing as the holy man. “Then a man from High Place (Samaria), who was also walking the road, saw the wounded man. Even though he was not a Tribal Member but a mixed blood despised by the tribal people, he felt pity for the man. He helped him by pouring good medicine on his wounds and wrapping them in a cloth. He put the man on his own animal and took him to a lodging house to care for him. “The next day, when the man of High Place (Samaria) was leaving, he gave from his own money pouch to the keeper of the lodging house. ‘Use this to care for him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will give you anything more that is needed.’” Creator Sets Free (Jesus) then looked at the scroll keeper and said, “Which one of these three acted as a fellow human being to the man who was attacked by the thieves?” The scrollkeeper answered, “The one who had pity on him.” “Go,” Creator Sets Free (Jesus) said, “and walk in the same way.”

Luke 10:25-37 (NRSVue)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 An expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” 27 He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”

29 But wanting to vindicate himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and took off, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came upon him, and when he saw him he was moved with compassion. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, treating them with oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him, and when I come back I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

~What catches your attention in this text and why?

~If we define neighbors as “those who need us,” who are your neighbors?

~Is there a point when our responsibility to care for someone ends? When and/or why?

~When did you need help? What feelings did you experience when you received the help you needed?

~What stands in the way of helping someone else?

Blessings, Pastor Ann.

Community Help Needed...

  • The Idaho Falls Community Food Basket is in need of volunteers to help collect monetary donations at the 4th of July parade. Prior to the start of the parade, volunteers will walk both sides of an assigned, two block section of the parade route twice. If you would be willing and able to help, or have any questions, please call or text me at the number listed below. We'll even throw in a really cool t-shirt for you to wear (and keep.) Kelly Call: (208) 521-6666
  • The RCCM would ask that each church provide at least two volunteers. This is something we have done for years and in the past, we have been able to get volunteers from the RCCM churches, but the last few years we have struggled to get participants. It only takes a short amount of time.
  • Various members of the community will be laying sod at the new Heritage Park at 2194 Snake River Parkway on June 25th at 6:00 pm. Many hands make light work. Please share this with your church youth groups/leaders and your congregations in hopes we can provide some help!

Luther Heights Camp opportunity...

Kelly Preboski, Camp Director at Luther Heights, has offered an opportunity for New Day individuals (youth & adults) to have some time at camp. There are various scenarios that we can explore from July 28-August 2. Kelly will share more with us on Wednesday, June 19 following the worship service. See you all there!

What Month is it?

During June, we celebrate Pride Month. Some people might know about the significance of it & the history, others may not. Some people just embrace the fact that we're all made in the image of God, and show that love to others, which is a wonderful thing. For those who want more information about it, here's a link to a glimpse into the meaning.

Thank you to those who have signed up! You made this easy!

Talk with Pastor Ann if you want to learn more about what this might look like.

Housing Needed

Intern Housing Needed for Summer

Barb Condon and John Stevens' former

parishioner’s grandson needs housing this summer. See the information in the note below. Housing is always very tight for summer interns in Idaho Falls.

Jayson is working on his master's in electrical engineering from the U of I. He is coming to Idaho Falls on the first of June to start an internship for his master's. He is looking for a place to live, so I'm reaching out to people I know to see if you all could help with housing; Either renting him space or if you know of someone who takes in interns. I would expect him to pay something and help out.

Contact Barb Condon or Cherie if you can help out or know of something that could help.

We are doing a drive for Idaho Falls Rescue Mission for the month of June. If you can bring anything on this list to church, we will get it delivered. We will collect items in the parish hall and deliver as we get them.

Rise & Release with Candy Canning of Catalyst Art Collaborative

We all harbor difficult emotions within us. Rise & Release offers us a chance to allow those (often pent up) feelings to come to the surface, just long enough to process and reflect upon them. Guests will be invited to share if they choose, giving us a glimpse into some of the many issues so many of us are facing on a daily basis. We'll participate in a group activity, using our bodies as a conduit for mindset change, as we reframe our thoughts from invasive or negative to more positive thoughts, or sometimes, releasing them completely. Together, we'll create large banners with paint sticks and acrylics, resulting in a shared art piece that can be displayed or cut into smaller pieces and shared among the group.

Added cost: $20

Time frame: 2-3 hours

No prior art experience required. All supplies will be provided.

H.E.R. — HIKE, EXPLORE, RENEW (FORMERLY KNOWN AS HIKE + PRAY)

Meet other women who want to hike, explore, and renew themselves this weekend! Join Ashlee on the Alice Lake hike, join one of the other hikes available this weekend, or visit a local hot spring. Add on our additional offerings, listed below, to ensure a meaningful time in the mountains.
