"C-ING" YOUR WAY TO BETTER PAINTINGS”

Feb.27-Mar.1, 2025

519 Ransom Road

Saluda, NCThere are many criteria for seeing the way to making better, successful paintings and this 3-day studio workshop will concentrate on those elements beginning with a "C". Learn how to incorporate them into the process of painting to eliminate indecision, a stumbling block in the creative process and arrive at finished paintings that meet your expectations. From concept, composition, color, contrast, correction through completion you will say, "I do "C" better paintings"!

There will be daily demos and talks prior to painting (the morning lecture!) with a break for lunch at one of Saluda's great cafes. Refreshed, we will return to afternoon painting.

We will work from photographic reference materials and learn how to make the transition from photo to successful painting. This workshop will include demonstrations, critiques and one-to-one instruction in oil, acrylic or watercolor, your choice of medium! Open to beginners to advanced, this workshop will be limited to 12 participants and is expected to fill quickly.

The workshop fee is $475. Materials list and other info will be sent to each registrant. Call or email Bill at 843-729-0593 or billjameson0593@gmail.com to request a registration or with any questions.

Let ‘Em Eat Fruitcake!

By Cappy Hall Rearick

Rushing towards me like a NFL linebacker, the holidays are coming. This annual emergence of goodwill makes me hungry for simpler times.

In the old days, as soon as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade ended, strings of Christmas lights mysteriously appeared downtown. But for me, each time I gaze through the windows of holidays past I remember my mother preparing for the season long before the first parade float was decorated.

Mama began to wrap our house in a blanket of holiday foods from the end of September until after New Year’s. Having grown up during the Great Depression, she was haunted by the things she longed for as a child: food and shoes. As an adult, they were her two extravagances. Thanksgiving and Christmas at our house meant turkey and dressing, cakes, pies, cookies and … bedroom slippers.

Mama claimed an allergy to our pecan tree, so she made me gather the nuts for her holiday baking sprees. Not only did I pick up the pecans, I picked them out as well.

As soon as the afternoon school bell rang, I’d rush home anticipating the mouth-watering aroma of what Mama was baking. For each batch of cookies she made, she gave me two to eat before storing the remainder in the freezer. As though on a mission from God, Mama froze everything but dust bunnies in her new Kenmore chest freezer.

My mother’s fruitcake, full of candied cherries, pineapple and pecans was the Queen Mother of her baked goods. Comedians joke about fruitcakes, but that’s because they never tasted Mama’s.

A month before Thanksgiving was when she baked her fruitcake allowing four weeks for flavors to blend. On that day, fruitcake fragrance spread throughout the house. Mama punched up the cake with a shot of Jack Daniel’s, but a generous helping of soul was what made it special.

Recently I was looking through her old cookbooks and as I leafed through faded recipe pages worn by seasons of use, I found where she had jotted down her fruitcake recipe. The memory of those past holidays snapped my synapses to attention like a new rubber band.

I had never attempted to bake a fruitcake, but I figured I ought to bake one for my grandsons, even if I had to force it down their throats.

I floured and mixed the fruit, nuts and flavorings. By the time it was packed tight in the pan, I was grinning all over the place. Before long, the remembered sweet fragrance from long ago drifted through the house. It was almost like going back to the womb.

Three hours later, I took it out of the oven to cool, but after thirty minutes my olfactory sensory neurons replaced my normal brain cells. Upside down onto the cake plate it went, at which point I forced myself to allow it rest for five minutes in the pan. Apparently not long enough. When I lifted the pan, the heart of the cake tumbled out. Candied fruit and nuts decorated my kitchen counter, the floor and eventually the soles of my shoes. What a glorious mess, but what wonderful smells — just like I remembered.

I wanted to pitch a good ol’ southern hissy fit. Instead, I dragged out a pair of old pink bedroom slippers, the heels worn and thin, the terry cloth soft with age. They had been Mama’s, undoubtably a past Christmas gift. I didn’t have the heart to throw them away after she died.

I slid my feet inside them, then flip-flopped back to the kitchen catastrophe while asking myself what my creative mother might have done with fruitcake globs.

Known as the Queen of Cliché, she’d have said: “When life deals you crumbs, make crumb cake.”

Smiling at the thought, I grabbed a handful of the sticky mess, rolled it into balls, and then called my grandsons in from my front yard where they were digging a direct tunnel to Toy’s R Us.

“Hey,” I yelled. “Y’all want some Gummy Bear footballs?”

They stopped digging and stared, probably wondering how much cooking wine I had gulped.

“Catch,” I yelled.

And they did. Those wannabee linebackers caught them as fast as I could throw them. When I asked how they liked my Gummy Bear footballs, they grinned with sticky fruits stuck to their teeth, “Got milk?”

Mama would have liked that answer.

IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON HERE IN SALUDA

AND

SINCE WE ARE SALUDA STRONG, LET’S CELEBRATE

Wednesday December 18th at 10 a.m. SLIP will hold a party for everyone in our community: oldsters, youngster and in-betweeners alike. We will sing songs of the season, led by the Hendersonville Ukelele Group (HUG), chat with friends and neighbors, give comfort to those still suffering from the effects of Helene, AND share stories of plans for the new year to heal us, one and all. And of course there will be food to round out the celebration.

In concert with the Pop Up Pantry, if you can, bring baking supplies and cooking oils to the party on the 18th to add to the Pantry shelves. These items are much in demand and not often donated.

SLIP is also working in concert with Polk County Meals on Wheels to add more volunteer meal deliverers to their roster.  Since the hurricane, the need for meals has almost doubled in our county so more drivers are needed. The program administrators will work very hard to honor your time and energy constraints. Drivers will go in pairs to ensure safety and comfort.

If you can donate a couple of hours each week or each month, please contact Karen Neff at 404-226-1113 to get involved with this important program.

The Saluda Disaster Recovery Fund Raises $60,000

The Saluda Downtown Foundation distributed $60,000 in grants to Saluda businesses through the Saluda Disaster Recovery Fund that it created October 3 in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

“We want to thank the many donors who contributed to this fund,” said Lynn Cass, treasurer of the Saluda Downtown Foundation. “Our goal was to help our businesses financially and show community support which is in keeping with our mission.”

The Foundation created the grant program with $10,000 from its general fund and then raised an additional $49,949 from donations from all over the country with amounts ranging from $10 to $10,000.

“We were overwhelmed by the generosity and were able to give grants to businesses ranging from $500 to $29,000,” Cass said.

The grants were made to 17 businesses based on financial need. The businesses estimated revenue losses from September 26 to October 11 of more than $330,000, inventory losses of $170,000, and structural losses in excess of $2 million. Several of the businesses are awaiting final engineering and consulting reports on structural repair.

Cass added that the community must continue to show support for Saluda businesses and stressed the importance of buying local. “The best thing you can do now is shop at our businesses and buy gift cards from them.”

The Saluda Downtown Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts, beautification, historic preservation, cultural development, and economic development in downtown Saluda.

A landslide behind Green River BBQ filled the restaurant with water and mud. The BBQ was one of several Saluda businesses receiving grants from the Saluda Disaster Recovery Fund.

Heartwood Gallery is Retiring!

Come Celebrate the Last Season with Us

As Heartwood finishes its 40th year on Main Street Saluda, I have decided to retire and close the gallery. It has been an honor and a privilege to be the folks in the middle, the conduit from regional artists’ hands into your homes. Every year we have looked forward to bringing you the best of contemporary American Craft and presenting it to you beautifully and with gratitude. Visitors often ask how a gallery like Heartwood could make it through the up and down turns of a small Main Street in such a small town for so long. The answer has always been community. You, our community, have steadily supported us; attending our events, bringing your families and guests, allowing us to help pick the perfect gift, adornment for a special occasion, or the right piece to accent your home. We are so grateful that you have helped us enjoy working to fulfill our mission: 100% American Craft to view, use, live with and give. Thank you.

Come and celebrate with us this last holiday season. It is our favorite time of year: you shop, we wrap! Special events are happening.

·       Gallery wide discounts will begin the season: 10% off all purchases over $100, 20% off all purchases over $500. We have several sale areas set up already that can be included.

·       Small Business Saturday, November 30th: Celebrating the 15th year of this event we encourage you to shop small independent businesses where diversity shines and you can experience the essence of place. Our gallery wide discounts will be happening.

·       Home Town Christmas, Friday, December 13th, 6-8pm: We will have holiday music by local artist and musician Hannah Seng, refreshments and good cheer. Come, wish us farewell and let us thank you.

The Outreach Ornament Fundraiser: Since 2012, we have chosen a handcrafted ornament to sell and donate the entire amount directly to Outreach, a nonprofit that provides financial and food assistance to thousands of Polk County residents in need. As our 13th and final ornament fundraiser for Outreach we have chosen a “Home” ornament that has been handcrafted in ceramic by Gina DeSantis. It perfectly reflects the help Outreach provides to Polk County residents making homes safer and healthier. We have donated over $30,000 since 2012. Help us make 2024 our best!

·       Christmas Eve, affectionately know as “Man Day” when we see men at the door early with cash in their pockets. For some it is a tradition. We serve coffee, cookies and beer and play country music. Of course, women are welcome as well. You socialize, we wrap!

We will be open regular hours through 2024, take a short break, and then begin clearance sales mid January 2025.

Come celebrate 40 years of 100% Fine American Craft to view, use, live with and give.

MOVING ON AND SLIMMING DOWN

For three years I have been privileged to work and instruct over 300 curious students and have made glass art that has gone into local and international homes. As my lease comes to an end in March I will be moving into a smaller private studio where I will continue my artistic development.

I am deeply grateful for the support and enthusiasm the Saluda, Tryon, and Hendersonville communities have offered me. There is much I will miss ……Main Street’s vibe, drop-in visits by locals, Garden Club projects, visiting instructors, group fusing parties for friends and families, karaoke, Musings Under the Moon, music during the Arts Festival, and fund raisers in the courtyard, the delight of students when they picked up their creations, coffee runs to the Wakey, lunch runs to Wards and the Onion, chats with Jim Carson, and a space that inspired me to create and stretch. Precious memories made.

I want to especially thank several people who helped me put together the gallery and continued to make Saluda Moon Glass Studio a special place. Always grateful to Teresa Marshall, Luanne Matson, Judy Thompson, Jim Beyer, Gof Schlembach, Doug Taylor, Barbara Cardais, Greg Bryant, Donna Devenport, Mary Ann Everett, Marci Grady, Hanna Toland, Felix Reyes, Arely Munoz, and Helene Pasternak.

DECEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY CLOSING SALE

Besides glass art, pottery, mosaics, and birdhouses I will be selling rugs, storage dressers from Ikea, Design Within Reach futon, shelving, glass supplies and gallery pedestals. Hours are 12 to 4 Friday, Saturday, Sunday or by appointment (call 937 623 1998). Closed between December 22 to January 27. I’ll be back to liquidate until all is gone.

THANK YOU SALUDA!

YOU HAVE LIFTED ME UP AND BROUGHT JOY TO ME EVERY DAY!

SEE YOU AROUND.

Benedetta Update

Toni Garcia, a summer Saluda resident and active Sister City supporter, just hosted Benedetta Formisano, our first summer exchange student from Italy, for a fabulous Cuban meal at her home in Coral Gables. Benedetta is working on a Master’s Degree in International Business at Florida Internation University in Miami and when Toni read about her in the So Saluda newsletter, she immediately reached out.   When Benedetta was here in 2019, she visited Toni at her Lake Shiela house and went kayaking and learned to play Rummikub. So, Toni hauled out the Rummikub after dinner.  Benedetta said she remembered that she played years ago, but didn’t remember how to play. After a brief tutorial, Benedetta won! Many thanks to Toni Garcia for spreading the love from Sister City to Benedetta.

Benedetta has been in Charlotte for Thanksgiving with Judy Thompson and her family and is heading back to Miami tomorrow. She helped to cook the turkey, broccoli casserole, dressing, cranberry sauce and other sides. All new recipes for her. When she was here in 2019, she ate only cookies and pasta , but now she eats everything! Then there was shopping at the Charlotte Mall on Black Friday (all Italians love to shop when they come here!). Hopefully, she’ll be back to Saluda in the spring to enjoy her Christmas present of a pass to the Saluda Gorge Zip Line.

The park is named Bell Park in honor of local summer camp pioneers Frank and Calla Bell, who headed Camp Mondamin and Camp Green Cove. Bell Park continues their legacy by providing opportunities for people to connect with nature.

Bell Park is located on the edge of the Green River Gorge. At a time when many hiking trails are still closed after Helene, it's good to have some new trails to celebrate!

Bell Park forms a key link in an expansive corridor of natural habitat. The 69-acre park extends from the High Bridge near Lake Summit, following the banks of the Green River, until it reaches the 14,000+ acre Green River Game Lands. Conserving Carolina acquired this land in 2015 and then worked with the County to make it a public park.

“At a time when many trails are closed after Helene, we’re glad to announce that there are now new trails to explore in Bell Park,” says Conserving Carolina’s Kieran Roe. “This is a part of the County where there aren’t as many places to get out in the woods, so we see Bell Park as a valuable addition to our local parks and trail systems. It’s a place where people can go for a run, walk their dogs, or enjoy some peaceful time sitting by a waterfall.”

Parke’s Stand Treehouse Opens at Cold Spring Basecamp: A New Destination for Adventure and Relaxation

Cold Spring Basecamp is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its latest accommodation, Parke’s Stand Treehouse, an extraordinary blend of rustic charm and modern comfort nestled in the heart of nature. Designed for adventurers, romantics, and those seeking a serene getaway, this elevated retreat offers guests a one-of-a-kind experience surrounded by lush forest landscapes.

Perched among the trees, Parke’s Stand Treehouse is named after the late Parke Waggoner, who spent many years hiking, hunting, and hanging out on the Cold Spring property. It is also the delivery of a promise that Hartwell Carson, the owner of Cold Spring Basecamp, made to his daughter to build her a treehouse. After promising a treehouse and only putting one board in the tree in their front yard, Hartwell finally did it right with a luxurious cabin high in the trees. Cross over the swinging bridge into the treehouse as it invites you to settle into nature, while also providing all the comforts you could want, including a comfy bed, kitchenette, loft for the kids, and a hot shower with a tree in the bathroom. From its panoramic windows to the private balcony overlooking the wooded terrain, every detail has been crafted to immerse guests in nature without sacrificing convenience.

“We wanted to create a space that makes a night in the woods easy, while also allowing folks to connect with the nature around them.,” said Hartwell Carson, co-owner of Cold Spring Basecamp. “Parke’s Stand Treehouse is not just a place to stay; it’s an invitation to slow down, explore the outdoors, and make lasting memories.”

Highlights of Parke’s Stand Treehouse include:

Elegant, Eco-Friendly Design: A warm, cabin-like interior outfitted with reclaimed wood and great views.

·       Modern Amenities: Including a kitchenette, full bathroom, plush bedding, and cozy loft for reading and for the kids.

·       Private Outdoor Space: A deck complete with cozy seating and scenic views perfect for stargazing or enjoying your morning coffee, and a private outdoor fire pit.

·       Direct Access to Adventure: Convenient access to Cold Spring Basecamp’s trail network and a launching off point for a whole host of adventures and cute towns in the area.

The Orchard Inn & Newman's Restaurant & Spa

As Fall begins to wane, the days get shorter but the weather couldn't be nicer here in beautiful Saluda. Mild sunny days and cool crisp evenings with zero humidity. My invigorating morning walks with our Boxer girl are gorgeous with magnificent sunrises that fill the tree lined horizon with blazing color. And the muted Fall colors continue to amaze. The holidays are right around the corner and there's no nicer place to get into the spirit of the season than at our 98 year old warm and cozy Inn with its signature fireplace and eclectic furnishings.  Not only are the colors of the changing leaves fabulous but it's also the crisp clean quality of the fresh air that's equally as fantastic. As you ascend the winding driveway to our 12-acre elegant mountain oasis, restaurant and spa, framed with beautiful winter plants, the stress of normal day to day life immediately starts to drift away. The official welcome committee (our Boxer - Roxy) will be standing by to challenge you with a stick and walk you up the steps to our antebellum front porch where she will attempt to lure you into a game of tug of war. Don't be tempted - you're sure to lose. Welcome to the Orchard Inn & Spa and Newman's Restaurant where the temperature is cool, the atmosphere is serene and the hospitality warm. Come help us celebrate 98 years of gracious southern living.

Our fine dining restaurant, Newman's, continues to receive high accolades from food critics far and wide and sells out most every meal. Voted by Our State Magazine as one of the top 14 "must experience restaurants" in North Carolina. We have created a lovely all weather outside dining area on our back terrace with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. We serve dinner every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting at 5:30 pm, and an incredible Brunch every Sunday beginning at 11:30 am. At Newman's Restaurant we strive to bring diners a true "farm to table" gastronomic experience. Treat yourself to a most creatively prepared and delicious fine dining culinary adventure! You don't have to be a guest of the Inn to enjoy a meal at Newman's. Our amazing 3-course brunch is only $47.50 and goes from 11:30-1:30 every Sunday. Our 4-course dinners are a great value at $95. Every seat in the elegant dining room has an awesome view of the Saluda mountains, and the fire table on our lower gazebo terrace is a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine or local beer prior to dinner. It's hard to find a better meal in the great culinary towns of Asheville, Greenville or Charleston. We are literally a diamond in the woods. Call 828-749-5471 now to book a table this weekend before it's too late. Now serving awesome cocktails and mixed beverages for your enjoyment!

The holidays are upon us and when you enter our historic romantic Inn it's like stepping into a Hallmark movie set. A 10' beautifully decorated tree, 25' garlands and beautiful wreaths create a most festive environment. We wish you much cheer this holiday season!

There are still a few spots available for our Holiday Festivities - our Dickens' Dinners take place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights starting at 6:30 over the first 3 weekends in December, and our New Year's Eve Black Tie Optional Gala is a 7-course extravaganza. Call to reserve.

Our Spa is open and all are welcome. We've created a very zen-like environment where you can de-stress, unwind, relax and be pampered with an array of therapeutic massages or restorative facials by highly skilled therapists. It's a perfect place to have a girl's afternoon off and sit by the waterfall while sipping a glass of wine after a heavenly treatment. The Koi fish are waiting to greet you so come check us out. We are now offering all organic healing products from Appalachian Growers.

We look forward to greeting you soon!
