November 2024 at Shorewood Public Library

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, we welcome the month of November—a time for reflection, gratitude, and gathering with friends and family.

November is also an opportunity to dive into new adventures, whether through books, workshops, or engaging library programs like our new First Friday Walks and Parent Social Groups.

Thank you for being a valued part of our library community. See you at the library! 🦃

Programs

First Friday Walks

Friday, November 1st

11:30 AM

Location: Meet at Shorewood Public Library and walk in Shorewood

🌟 No registration required

Shorewood Public Library and the Shorewood Longevity Project present “First Friday Walks”! These 30-40 minute guided walks through the village were planned mindfully to help build community and wellness through winter, and encourage us to keep moving our bodies even when it seems that everything else has slowed down. Walks will begin at 11:30 AM and all are welcome to join! The walk is stroller-friendly, but please leave pets at home for the safety of all walkers.

Walks will be held in light rain, but if the weather is really inclement (heavy rain, ice, unsafe conditions), we will cancel. Additionally, feel free to call the library any time at (414) 847-2670 to check in on the status of the walks.

Please dress for the weather, bring water, walk at your own risk, and have fun!

We are so excited to walk with you!

Staff Picks

This month, we're sharing books that we're very grateful for 🦃

Check them out at the library!

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened

by Allie Brosh

Recommended by KATE, who says "not only is it one of the funniest books I've ever read, but anyone who has ever struggled with their own mental health or known someone who did so will recognize what they see in these pages. By sharing her personal experiences, Brosh reminds us that we are not alone in something that can often feel very isolating. And that it is not always possible to clean all the things."

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

Recommended by BEN, who notes this is a "narrative of overwhelming emotion and passion rooted in a love for all the good in humanity." Ben says: "I never felt as much pain and rage, happiness and satisfaction, and such burning desire for making my world brighter everyday than I have throughout my reading of this eternal classic, and every moment since I’ve put it down."

Turning to Stone: Discovering the Subtle Wisdom of Rocks

by Marcia Bjornerud

"Bjornerud’s life as a geologist has coincided with an extraordinary period of discovery in the geosciences. From an insular girlhood in rural Wisconsin, she found her way to an unlikely career studying mountains in remote parts of the world and witnessed the emergence of a new understanding of the Earth as an animate system of rock, air, water and life. We are all, most fundamentally, Earthlings and we can find existential meaning and enduring wisdom in stone." (From the publisher)

--- Recommended by MEGAN

System Collapse

by Martha Wells

Recommended by QUINN, who notes, "this is the latest in the Murderbot Diaries series (which began with the novella All Systems Red). The series follows Murderbot, an android security consultant who hacks its own programming in order to keep its human clients safe...and also to consume hours and hours of pirated entertainment media. System Collapse was really impactful. It follows Murderbot post freeing itself from its corporate owners and delves into the after-effects of trauma and the ways in which Murderbot, despite being a traumatized and wildly snarky living weapon, is still able to help prevent others from being abused like it was. For a book about a murderous robot, a hyperintelligent spaceship with the personality of an amoral cat, an alien colony, and a lot of corporate backstabbing, it's an incredibly touching and heartfelt read! The series is also set to be made into a TV show soon, so keep an eye out for that."

Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted

by Suleika Jaouad

"An Emmy Award-winning writer and activist describes the harrowing years she spent in early adulthood fighting leukemia and how she learned to live again while forging connections with other survivors of profound illness and suffering." (From the publisher)

Recommended by CAROLYN, who says that this author's "health was also the subject of a documentary on Netflix last year called American Symphony, and she has a new book coming out about journaling. Her health struggle has been ferocious, and her bravery and determination are most inspiring."
