Spiced Lamb Tagine w/ Hints of Herbaceousness? Yes.

------- Written by GIV Winemaker, David Shattuck

We are always very excited to release a new vintage of one our favorites red wines in the Grand Island Vineyards portfolio: the 2020 Cabernet Franc.

This grape varietal makes one of the more complex red wines we offer with rich fruit flavors, floral components, and hints of herbaceousness. I love this wine as an after dinner sipper or to pair with richer dishes like spiced lamb tagine, roasted wild mushrooms, and prime rib roast.

The 2020 Cabernet Franc pours a dark maroon with a hint of purple. The wine displays a rich, brooding dark fruit profile on the first pour. With a swirl, an intriguing note of cedar box and smoked oak intermingle with dark plum and blackberry.

The wine is luscious with elegant tannins minerality that fade into a hint of salinity on the midpalate. The finish is captivating with baking spice, chocolate, green olive, and cherry flavors.

Ten Fine Red Wines to Go!

------- Written by GIV Winemaker, Ed Siekel

Harvest may be over for Joe, but we're far from finished in the cellar! While our white wines have wrapped up their fermentations, we still have about ten red wines patiently waiting on their skins.

This extended skin contact is a crucial step for our red wines at Grand Island Vineyards. It allows the wine to absorb as much of the rich colors, flavors, and tannins from the grape skins as possible. The increased surface area exposed to air during this step also plays a prominent role; helping the tannins mature, mouthfeel improve, color stabilize, and new, complex aromas and flavors emerge.

To ensure optimal development, David and I taste each wine daily. This year, our red wines are spending an average of nearly four weeks on their skins, and I think this vintage will continue to show the benefits of that extra time as they age in barrel and eventually make it to all of you!

Harvest is OVER - Let's Drink Some Wine!

------- Written by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

Harvest is finally over!

Now it's in the hands of Ed and Dave, our beloved winemakers.

As old farmers will say "no two harvests are quite the same..." and that certainly holds true this year.

Quick recap, grape harvesting started late August with us gathering much of the white wine varieties. The weather was mild and the white wine harvest went smoothly and wrapped up in late September. At this point, Pinot Noir was the only red wine variety harvested.

It seemed as though we might need to wait quite a while for the rest of the red wine varieties, and we just sort of sat on our hands waiting. Even if sugar levels were close, we didn't think flavors were present in the fruit, and needed to wait accordingly.

Then early October got warmer, and the grapes matured nicely, so we started picking the Petite Sirah. However as it got even warmer, almost I dare say really hot in October, all varieties were ready to pick or close to being needed to be picked.

Vine health is very critical at this point, if vines shut down, no real ripening of the fruit will take place and you only gain sugar through berry dehydration.

A couple lots were harvested with higher sugar than normal, knowing it is always better than not having enough sugar, so we hurried through Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and finally, by October 16th, we brought in the last lot to the winery.

As always, now is the time to come join us and see the fruits of our labors. We would love to see you!

Cheers,

Joe
