The ICAA, INTBAU, and the King's Foundation are pleased to continue their collaboration with The Architecture of Place: In Conversation with..., a series of interviews featuring three architects from different backgrounds and points of view: Alireza Sagharchi, Wesam Al Asali, and María Fernanda Sánchez.

In this iteration of the series, María Fernanda Sánchez interviews Wesam Al Asali about his work, background, and design perspective.

Wesam Al Asali is an architect, educator, researcher, and enthusiast for combining digital and manual fabrication technologies with local building crafts and natural materials. His work spans construction history, building technology, and craft studies to explore the role of culture and society in rethinking architectural practice in the context of climate challenges. He is an assistant professor at IE School of Architecture and Design in Segovia, Spain.

AWARDS & PRIZES: THE AWARDS FOR EMERGING EXCELLENCE IN THE CLASSICAL TRADITION

The Awards for Emerging Excellence are a suite of prizes that recognizes exceptional talent exhibited by young professionals in architecture, landscape, and craftsmanship. The Awards seek to highlight emerging talent that engages with classical design, demonstrating a thoughtful use of precedents from the past in projects that are forward-looking, creative, and holistically demonstrate their talents. The Awards for Emerging Excellence aim to shine a light on exceptional talent and reward young people excelling in their chosen fields.

The Architect’s Prize For Excellence in Architecture, given with the King’s Foundation and INTBAU, is awarded to an emerging architect whose work exhibits a holistic understanding of the principles of classical design, and whose projects show a demonstrable excellence in their design.

The Bunny Mellon Prize For Excellence in Garden Design is awarded to an emerging designer whose work furthers the ICAA’s mission that design and craftsmanship are vital to lasting and meaningful places.

The Maker’s Prize for Excellence in Craftsmanship is awarded to the emerging craftsperson, artist, or tradesperson whose work demonstrates a wealth of knowledge and excellence in a traditional building art, such as ornamental plaster, decorative painting and finishing, furniture design, masonry, blacksmithing, or any other allied art.

The Awards for Emerging Excellence are open to applicants from around the world aged 35 or under working in the building crafts, urban design and planning, architecture, landscape architecture, garden design, or any allied arts.

Submissions for the 2024 Awards for Emerging Excellence are now being accepted. The deadline for submissions is October 1st, 2024.

LEARN MORE

“Throughout the past decade and a half, New York City’s skyline-altering luxury building boom has produced no shortage of eye-catching, unmistakably contemporary landmarks. Some are twisting or gridded or stacked like Jenga blocks, others are sleek and supertall, and nearly all are clad in shimmering expanses of glass (see Hudson Yards). But there is another side to this story. Amid the futuristic never-seen-that-before, stretching-into-the-clouds pyrotechnics, some of the city’s most prestigious new apartment high-rises are being designed by architects who unabashedly look to the past.”

On June 7, 2023, the ICAA hosted a panel discussion as an expansion of the Veranda article, Is the Future of American High-Rise Residences Rooted in Old-World Elegance? by Stephen Wallis. Held at the offices of Robert A.M. Stern Architects and moderated by Stephen Wallis, the panel consisted of Paul Whalen and Dan Lobitz, Partners at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, and Peter Pennoyer, Principal of Peter Pennoyer Architects. The three architects discussed how their firms' buildings have risen to meet the demands of modern life, while still harkening back to the old-school elegance of the classic buildings that form New York's architectural fabric.

The full three-part course provides an overview of the concept of proportion as a design tool in traditional architecture, including an explanation of the idea of symbolic or qualitative number; an introduction to Pythagorean and Platonic numerical philosophy; the nature of beauty, its relation to number, and its positive, healthful effects; the derivation of the ancient musical octave and its use as a guide to harmony; a discussion of the Golden Section, its mathematics, geometry, relation to philosophy, and particularly its role as a geometrical “logos”; and the connection of all these ideas to the numerical-geometrical canons of classical architecture.
