The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

The say that it takes a village to raise a child, but to raise the town’s Christmas tree it takes a village, the LCC baseball team, a local realtor, a contractor, an electrician, the chamber of commerce staff, city employees, and LMUD.

While speaking with the Chamber’s interim director David Teeter about the Magical Country Christmas coming up this weekend, he praised the people and groups on this list for taking time out of their busy schedules to help make the magic happen.

David said that every year it gets a little more difficult to put the tree together as the branches are smashed and broken and the lights and electrical wires are twisted up. Just like your own tree if you are a fan of the artificial variety.

He praised Jason Colbert Construction and Sierra Desert Properties for working tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the assembly to prepare the tree and make any repairs. With the tree showing its age after a decade of use, Jason and Melanie began the preparations earlier than usual.

David added that Russell Bates of Novah Electric was instrumental in making repairs so the Christmas tree will shine brightly on Saturday when the switch is flipped.

David also let me know of an exciting development the Chamber has in store for next year. Through PG&E Settlement Funds and partnership support from the City of Susanville, NST Engineering, and Hat Creek Construction, the Chamber will welcome a brand-new tree.

Starting next year, the new, taller tree will be displayed on a permanent stand – a fresh addition to our cherished holiday tradition.

There are many festivities around town to enjoy this weekend. Friday afternoon kicks off craft fairs at Lassen College (5:00-8:00), the Vets Hall (4:00-8:00) and the Susanville Assembly of God (4:00-7:00). They will all continue on Saturday morning into the early afternoon.

You can always find a unique gift or homemade treat at these events. Some of my favorite Christmas ornaments were made by local artists and crafters.

At 4:00 it’s time to head uptown for our Magical Country Christmas. The Chamber is hosting a Hot Toddy Walk. There will be lots of vendors and uptown merchants open with food, drinks, and other deals.

The Northern California Cancer Advocates will have hot chocolate in the building formerly occupied by Uptown Uniforms. They will share a space with a Pop-Up Shop featuring Stacey Barnetche’s Perfectly Imperfect bags, hats, and home décor and Ms Debbie 2 U’s custom tumblers and gifts. They open the doors at noon.

Our Lassen High Drill team will have glow jewelry, wands, and other lighted accessories for your little ones to wave during the Parade of Lights.

The dancers of J&J Performing Arts will not only lead the parade and provide entertainment, they will be selling hot chocolate and popcorn at the studio to help pay for competition costs.

About 6:00 the highly anticipated Parade of Lights will start. Narrated by local businessman Curtis Bortle, the parade will feature many clubs and community groups including Miss Lassen County and court. It’s always fun to see these festively-lit vehicles travel up Main Street.

The grand finale? Santa Claus will make his way to the Christmas Tree, the lights will be illuminated, and the evening will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the Susanville sky behind the Elks Hall.

There are times when we think that there is nothing to do in our small town, but this weekend is not one of the them! This year’s Magical Country Christmas exemplifies the warmth and tradition of Susanville, bringing the community together in celebration.

We can’t wait to see you there next year to enjoy the brand-new tree and continue making lasting holiday memories!

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Photofeature: Janesville Fire Fetes New Engine with Push-In Ceremony

A SusanvilleStuff Photofeature

by Jeremy Couso

Janesville Fire Protection District Chief Dustin Leef welcomed a crowd of Janesville residents, local dignitaries, law enforcement and JFPD Board Members to a welcoming ceremony for a brand-new Type 1 fire engine last Tuesday evening at the Janesville Fire Hall.

According to Leef it’s a big deal whenever a new piece of apparatus enters service, and to celebrate the event the department held a ‘push-in’ ceremony.

“The reason we do a push-in ceremony in the fire service,” explains Chief Leef, “dates back all the way to when fire engines or wagons were pulled by horses.”

Backing up the apparatus with horses made it difficult to align the engine’s steam connections with the station’s steam connections. For this reason, the horses were typically disconnected, and the engine was again pushed back into the station by hand.

“It’s been a tradition since then that once a vehicle gets ready to go online in the service, the first thing we’ll do is push it in and then from then on its ready to serve the community.”

“Being a small department, as you all know, getting a new engine, getting it staffed and getting it on call is going to be great for the community.”

CHP Seeking Information About

Chester Hit and Run Incident

A verbal altercation between a motorist and a pedestrian on First Street in Chester Wednesday led to injuries for a bystander and the arrest of a Chester man on charges that he fled the scene without stopping or notifying law enforcement.

According to details released by the Susanville Office of the California Highway Patrol, at around 9:00p.m., a 25-year-old Chester resident, identified as Adrian Ruelas Jr., was driving his 2015 Infiniti sedan northbound on First Avenue south of Fourth Street.

He encountered a pedestrian making arm gestures.

“A loud verbal argument ensued, and a passenger [unknown] exited the Infiniti and chased the pedestrian east on Fourth Street,” explains CHP Public Information Officer Travis Music.

“Hearing the loud argument, Pat Graham walked from his residence to the middle of the Fourth Street.”

As the pedestrian began fleeing from the passenger, Ruelas began to pursue in the black Infiniti, driving from northbound First Ave to eastbound Fourth Street where he struck Graham.

Ruelas fled the scene along with the still unidentified passenger. Graham was transported to the hospital by a concerned citizen.”

The driver of the Infiniti continued eastbound and failed to stop or notify law enforcement. The car and its driver were later located by CHP personnel at a residential address in Chester.

“Alcohol impairment was determined to be a factor in this collision.”

This collision is under investigation by the CHP Susanville office. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is requested to call the Susanville Communications Center at 1.530. 252.1900.

Improvements at Elks Club Nearly Finished

December 3, 1926

Extensive improvements are being made in the Elks’ club house and they will be finished by December 10 on which date a rousing meeting and initiation will be held.

The entire first floor of the club house has been remodeled. Six rooms have been converted into one, which will be used as a lodge and lounging room. When finished, this room will be something of which the members may be proud.

It is finished in white pine veneer paneling with a rosewood finish. This paneling, which is of a very fine quality and beautiful appearance, was donated by the Red River Lumber company.

At the head of the lodge room and at the entrance is a small ante room partitioned off from the larger room by a paneled wall upon which is painted a very beautiful figure of an Elk’s head. Under the head is the Elk’s motto: The Faults of Our Brothers We Write Upon the Sands; Their Virtues on the Tablet of Love and Memory. The stairway has been moved from the middle of the building to the front. New electrical fixtures have been installed and the back porch has been enclosed into a storeroom.

A complete new hot air heating plant has been put in the basement and the club house throughout is warmly and evenly heated.

Upstairs, a bedroom has been converted into a club room. In the spring it is planned to have a new entrance in the front of the building.

The present improvements will cost in the neighborhood of $25,000.
