Dear Farm Friends,
As we enter winter on the farm, I encounter a lot of people asking what we do all winter. With the exception of a two week break from 12/21 - 1/5, the farm continues all winter. We deliver produce 50 weeks of the year.
Things do slow down. There is no planting, weeding, or watering. But there is still much to be done. Irrigation equipment needs to be removed from the fields, organized and repaired. Many other tools need care and maintenance. Repairs that were put off during the busier months can finally get on the list. Leftover seeds need to be inventoried and then the huge task of selecting and ordering seeds for 2025. Not to mention updating all our planting plans based on CSA member feedback.
Between now and January, many tons of carrots need to be dug out of the fields and put into cold storage. And we are still harvesting greens from our own fields as well as gathering produce from our friendly partner farms at lower elevations, so that we can continue packing and delivering your weekly boxes. Then, starting in early January the greenhouse work begins again. Seeding and tending the hundreds of thousands of baby plants that will go into the fields next spring and summer. And on it goes!
Thanks for joining us for this ride,
John
