The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett
The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of pageants, parades, and the Noah Kahan show, an indie/alt/country folk concert in the middle of Hel… I mean Wheatland.
I’m calling it the Summer of Sofie.
And did I mention that every place we go is experiencing a record-breaking heat wave?
So, I’m trying to stay hydrated and be on time and make the most of every moment before my youngest heads off to college. Gulp.

We’ve traveled to the Miss Yuba/Sutter competition, where Princess Sof, Ambassadress Hayley, and MLC Chalise were welcomed as visiting royalty. It was a great night to preview the fair food and watch their youth showcase their talents.
Then it was on to the Manteca Youth Focus competition led by my friend Shim Lacy. This program has always been an inspiration to me. They had 43 participants in three different age groups and awarded more than $9000 in scholarship money!
I was honored to serve as a judge and blown away by the accomplishments of these teens! Each contestant chooses a cause to raise money for and educate the community on. It was so uplifting to hear what a difference they have made in their town.
The Chester 4th of July parade never disappoints and this year’s was over the top. Chalise’s dad Randy drove the girls in a cute little convertible and our Miss Lassen County contestants followed on foot, passing out candy and patriotic beads.
The royal tour ended with the parade at the Paul Bunyan Mountain and Blues Festival in Westwood. I love seeing small towns put on their best. The park was filled with vendors, water slides, jump houses, and tests of skill and strength for the logging show. It was a reminder of when this little berg was one of the biggest cities in CA.
To witness little girls’ faces light up when they see the girls in their sparkles and crowns is just the best. One sweet one made the heart sign with her chubby hands and yelled “Princess Power” to them. Others just enveloped them in hugs.
Then there was the group of 12-13 year old boys who rode by in the back of a truck. Their chins dropped and one mumbled “Slay queen” as they passed.
Speaking of Miss Lassen County pageant contestants, they have been busy practicing the opening number, preparing their talents, and answering impromptu questions with ease.
It’s nice to know that I have Becky (Lee) Hubbard to stand in for me. A mom can only be so many places at once!

Thank you to Tressa Guess of Thunder Mountain Photography for taking the pictures and Al and Joy Robbins for our beautiful Mediterranean-inspired backdrop.
The Miss Lassen County Scholarship pageant is next week, Wednesday July 17th on the main stage and tickets are available! This year our current court (Chalise and company) are hosting a pre-show starting at 7:00, with the pageant following at 8:00.
You won’t want to miss this showcase of local talent! It really does make you feel hopeful when you watch teens (our future) suck up their courage, accept the challenge, and tell you all about themselves , their involvement in the community, and their plans for college and beyond. On stage. In front of everyone.
You will be in awe.

Fire Department Battles Brush Fire by
Hall of Justice in Extreme Heat
As the mercury soared into triple-digits Saturday afternoon, firefighters from the Susanville Fire Department were called on to battle a brush fire which consumed two-tenths of an acre near the Hall of Justice on Riverside Drive.
At around 1:30p.m., Truck One from the SFD, was leaving the Sierra Center parking lot at 2900 Main Street when the crew noticed a large column of black smoke coming from the area between the Hall of Justice and the Susan River.
| |
|
Truck One responded and contacted Susanville Interagency Fire Center dispatch who advised they were dispatching a wildland response to Riverside Drive.
“Truck One arrived on scene prior to the dispatch to find brush and grass burning in the vacant field next to the Courthouse, burning towards the Courthouse,” explains SFD Fire Captain Dale Johnson.
“Truck One assumed command and deployed a hose line along the right flank of the fire protecting the Courthouse. CalFire E2261 arrived on scene and attacked the left flank of the fire using a mobile attack. Truck One and E2261 stopped the forward progress of the fire.”
SFD E628 and CalFire Devil’s Garden Crew 4 arrived on scene, secured the fire’s perimeter, and assisted with mop-up and complete extinguishment.
“Once the fire was extinguished, a fire-cause determination was conducted. Personnel could not determine a cause as all evidence was destroyed in the fire. However, the fire did consume a known homeless encampment.”
Even with temperatures reaching triple-digits Saturday afternoon there were no firefighter injuries. The Susanville Fire Department was supported by CalFire E2261 and Devil’s Garden Crew 4, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, and the Susanville Police Department.

Susanville Store Hit by Burglars
July 9, 1950
Office of the Miller’s Market on lower Main Street was robbed of over $3,100 sometime Friday night.
Using a ladder left by workmen the day before when they were installing coolers, the thieves entered the store by cutting a 12 x 14-inch hole in the roof. The ladder was left leaning against the rear of the building.
Most of the money taken was in the form of payroll checks from Lassen Lumber and Box Co., Paul Bunyan Lumber Co., and Fruit Growers Supply Co. These checks were endorsed for deposit only so will be of no use to the burglars. Only $414 of the money was in cash.
Manager Al Swinney, Ray Miller and Don Kernan were first to discover the robbery about 8:30 Saturday morning. Mr. Miller is the new owner of the market, which is one of a chain supervised by Mr. Kernan. Mr. Miller’s home is in Chico, but he was in town that day.
Mr. Swinney believes the thief was someone who knew a great deal about the building in view of the way in which he entered. The intruder apparently left by the way he entered as there were no doors or windows opened.
