Luvk9s July monthly newsletter

The dog days of summer are upon us. Have you ever wondered where that expression came from? Here's a hint - it has nothing to do with our canine companions.

The star Sirius, also known as "Alpha Canis Majoris" or the dog star, is the brightest star in the night sky. "Dog days" happen when Sirius appears to rise alongside the sun in late July in the Northern Hemisphere. The Greeks and Romans believed the combined heat from these two stars is what made those days the hottest of the year and came up with this now common expression. This year, the dog days of summer start July 3 and will end August 11.

Tips to survive 4th of July fireworks

While humans enjoy 4th of July fireworks, most dogs don't. Here are some tips to help calm your nervous dog.

  • Stay home. Your presence will help relieve your dog's stress.
  • Be calm; dogs pick up on our nervousness.
  • It's OK to hold your dog; you'd comfort your child the same way.
  • Minimize the intensity of the fireworks by closing windows and drawing the shades, turning on a sound machine or playing calming music.
  • If your dog has a severe reaction to noise, consult your vet for medication to help.
  • Try wrap therapy or a Thundershirt.

Does your dog pull, lunge, growl and/or bark at other dogs while on leash? You’re not alone.

Leash reactivity is usually on any list of “top 10 dog behavior issues.”
