On view now through March 2, 2025
Since MMAM was founded in 2006, the museum has become known for its exhibitions, programs, and collections that ask what is marine art, and what can it be? MMAM’s new exhibition, A Nation Takes Place, builds on this legacy. Co-curators Tia-Simone Gardner and Shana M. griffin, have brought together some of the most ambitious artists and writers from the past century and look at how they draw critical attention between water and nation, water and sovereignty, and water and reimagined ecologies. From a sweeping set of original historical marine art paintings by Edward Moran, to large scale new work from Kent Monkman Studio, to socially charged works by Kara Walker on loan from the Walker Art Center, to a new commission from Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, A Nation Takes Place continues the conversation around marine art, and pushes the boundaries of who is included.
