Looking Forward to October

Fall is upon us and it's looking like a beautiful season ahead. I'm looking forward to watching the leaves change colors and the excitement of the holidays on the horizon. We celebrate our beloved state this month observing Nevada Day on Friday, October 25th. Check out all the fun events planned here to celebrate our beautiful home. As we approach "Spooky Season", we are excited for our Halloween event at the Wilbur D May Youth Center! Read on for more details. You can also find a list below of family-friendly activities happening throughout October.

October is not just for celebrating Halloween, it is also about raising awareness surrounding National Bullying Prevention Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, distinctions that are very important to our mission of keeping children safe and families together. SafeVoice is an anonymous reporting system in Nevada that students can call, or use digitally, to submit tips concerning their safety or the safety of others. You can find SafeVoice at www.safevoicenv.org, by calling 833-216-SAFE, or by downloading the SafeVoice app to a mobile device.

The Children's Cabinet's Safe Place is another amazing resource for youth, available 24/7. We partner with local businesses (all marked with bright yellow signs) to provide a network of "safe places" where youth can go for immediate help when they are in crisis. Youth can also dial our Safe Place hotline at 1-800-536-4588 or TEXT "SAFE" with their current location to 4HELP (4457) to reach a Children's Cabinet Case Manager. You may see our Safe Place team out in the community doing school and street outreach making sure youth know about Safe Place and the safety and counseling resources available to them.

Thank you for your support and for helping spread the word about The Children’s Cabinet’s mission and programs.

New Resource: The Self-Sufficiency Standard

We are proud to announce the launch of a new resource for parents and community partners: the Self-Sufficiency Standard. Created in collaboration with the Nevada Early Childhood Advisory Council (NECAC) and the University of Washington’s Center for Women’s Welfare, this innovative tool offers an alternative to traditional poverty measures by defining the income required to meet the basic needs of working families in Nevada without reliance on public or private assistance. The Standard calculates the minimum cost of living based on county, the age of children, and the number of adults in a household.

Local gardeners and farmers, your surplus produce can make a difference! We are proud to partner with Ample Harvest to bring more fresh produce to the families we serve and reduce food waste in our community. If you have extra fruits and vegetables from your garden, don't let them go to waste!

Produce can be dropped off at our CC Market at 777 Sinclair St. in Reno on Mondays and Thursdays between 9am and 12pm.
