Board Update

Hello Madrone Trail,

The board has been hard at work doing what we can to ensure our school thrives. A couple of weeks ago the board and faculty gathered together for a social at Hummingbird Winery. We had a great time and are committed to continuing to build strong relationship with the faculty and the entire school community.

Coming up in November we will be going on a board retreat to focus on long term vision and direction for the school. This will enable us to plan long term and not just be ruled by the tyranny of the urgent. A couple of board members are also planning on going to a charter school conference in November to learn and make connections with other charter schools. The more well connected we are the deeper the well to draw from for resources and wisdom.

Finally, our budget is in fantastic shape but we are always looking for ways to raise more money. If anyone in the school community has experience with grant writing we would love your help in pursuing grants to help our school. If you are interested in working alongside Mr. Bracco and Kelly Stofflet to help find and write these grants please reach out to us at board@madronetrail.org

For the good of the school,

Madrone Trail Board of Directors

Jog-a-thon-- Next Week!

We will be having our 13th annual Jog-a-thon on Friday, October 18! Forms went home and are due the day of the Jog-a-thon. There are extra Jog-a-thon forms in the office and on the website (click on the Jog-a-thon calendar event). This is a big fundraiser every year for our school. Last year we made over $19,000! The money we earn goes towards classroom funds, our athletic program, and helps fund Games events the older grades attend.

New this year! Jog-a-thon pledges can be paid in cash, checks made out to MTPCS, or paid online through the link on our website, madronetrail.org/donate (PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, credit/debit cards accepted) or by using the QR Code on the Jog-a-thon pledge form.

We will need parent volunteers, especially in the lower grades, to help mark laps, attend to the water stations, set-up the tables, and clean-up afterwards. If you can help on the day of please let Ms. Cori know, cori.royer@madronetrail.org or just show up the day of. You will need to be a registered volunteer to participate, and you still have time to get that done! Click here to get started with your application.

The classes will be running at the following times:

6th-8th grade: 9:00-10:00 am

1st grade: 11:10-11:40 am

2nd-3rd grade: 11:45-12:30 pm

4th-5th: 1:45-2:45 pm

Meal Program and Farm-to-School Update

In this edition…

Hugelkultur, record-setting participation numbers, and delicious specials next week!

Third grader Atlas Battisti excited to enjoy his favorite sandwich along with some edamame and organic orange bell peppers and Persian cucumbers from Fry Family Farm.

We had a great week in the lunch program! The salad bar was stocked with an abundance of colorful and healthy fresh veggies, our jalapeño chicken & cheddar chowder was wildly successful, and we continue to set new participation records! On Thursday, we served 118 breakfasts (up from the low 80s at the end of last year.)

Pro Tip from a 3rd Grader: If you eat breakfast at home, you can still stop by the kitchen for a blueberry bagel and cream cheese or granola and fruit to save for snack! Also, students who arrive late can visit the kitchen during snack time and still receive a free breakfast (limited to bagels & granola.)

Specials – October 14-18

Sandwich: Italian Sub with salami* and pepperoni*, provolone cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, olives, banana peppers and Italian vinaigrette served on a hoagie roll

Soup: Cheesy Broccoli-Cheddar, served with bread & butter

*no added nitrates

A Note About Soup & Sandwich Specials

Sandwich and soup specials each week are “while supplies last." They often feature items that are more costly or we don’t stock on a regular basis.

Kitchen Herb Garden Project

The farm-to-school committee has completed the design for our herb garden, which entails an enclosure similar to a raised bed to protect the garden from little feet with a Hügelkultur mound. We will break ground on the project at Stewardship Day on October 19 if you would like to pitch in!

Food Preservation Workshops

Are you interested in fermentation or food preservation? Want to improve your gut health and encourage your kids to try new vegetables? Chef Evan and friends will be announcing some workshops for this fall and early winter that will address vegetable fermentation and preservation. Participants (adults and students) will take home fermented items to enjoy while also helping stock up on reserves for the lunch program. Think pickled beets, dilly beans, kraut, and even kimchi! Contact Chef Evan if you are interested in helping facilitate or signing up as a student! Be on the lookout for dates and more details!

GENERAL PROGRAM INFO

If you missed the last updates with general information about the program, including snack policy and EZ app, please see the Friday Update from August 23.

From the Athletic Director

Hello Madrone Family,

I’m sorry I was not able to contribute to the Friday Update last week. Some of you know this already, but I was actually hospitalized for a week. Long story short, I had a bad burn on my left big toe that got badly infected. This led to necrosis of the toe. One typical treatment for this is amputation. I still have my toe (for now), since I do not have any comorbidity health conditions the doctors are letting me try to heal and save the toe. This involves doing very little physically and I will be off work for a while. I will to do my best to organize our sports programs from home with the help of Ms. Sherrie and Ms. Kelly in the office. I am home on antibiotics and strong pain meds, but in good spirits. I’m very grateful for all the thoughts and well wishes from our Madrone community this past week. It meant a great deal to me.

Looking Towards Halloween

We will be celebrating Halloween at school on Thursday, October 31. At Madrone Trail, this means we will have a parade of costumes after lunch and then individual class celebrations afterwards. Please do not send your child in their costume to school, or apply elaborate makeup they will have to wear all day as it is very distracting for the first part of the day. Kindergarten classes will be doing their own celebrations, look for specifics in your class emails from Miss Josclyn and Miss Gina.

As you look to purchase or make your child's Halloween costume this year please observe our school guidelines surrounding the Halloween costumes that they wear at school. If students would like to dress up in something that is outside these guidelines, we encourage them to do that on Halloween night instead of at school.

  • Bring your costume to change into before the parade. Parade will be at 1:30 pm on the track.
  • Homemade costumes are encouraged.
  • Costumes must follow the school dress code.
  • Keep face paint, make-up, and hair simple (you’re going to be applying it all at school.)
  • You must be able to sit, walk, hear, and see with your costume on (face masks can only be worn during the parade)
  • No costumes that are gory/scary.
  • No prop weapons.
