$40,000 in Youth Climate Action Grants Awarded

The City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment and Sustainability is proud to announce the awardees from the GCP Seeds of Change Youth Climate Action Grants Program. Thanks to support from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund initiative, nine youth-led and youth-serving projects were chosen to receive grants totaling $40,000. Green Workforce Resource Launched

Awareness of green jobs is lacking and pathways to green careers was a top theme that arose through a listening tour conducted by FUSE Executive Fellow, Thanapat Vichitchot. To help the community better understand what green jobs and pathways are, he developed a Marketing and Communications plan which included the development of a new Green Jobs webpage located on the City of Cincinnati's Office of Environment and Sustainability website. The purpose is to raise awareness and uplift resources about green jobs towards the Green Cincinnati Plan's Education goal above. Stay tuned for further updates as this is the initial phase. The second phase will incorporate specific training and education partners along green job pathways.

Solar for All Homeowner Survey

The Ohio Air Quality Development Authority (OAQDA) will receive an award of $156 million through the U.S. EPA’s Solar for All program to install solar that benefits residential households in traditionally underserved communities. Final program details are being negotiated between the state and EPA, but it is anticipated that the program will be approved by the end of 2024. In the meantime, OAQDA is working to reach residents interested in participating in the future program. If you are an interested homeowner, you can fill out their homeowner solar survey now. This isn’t an application, but it will help OAQDA capture valuable data to inform program efforts.

OES Staff Corner: Welcome Allies & VISTAs!

Anastasia “Anna” Stowers (above right) is excited to join OES as a Public Ally through AmeriCorps. In this role, Anna will focus on actions such as engaging residents about clean energy and energy efficiency upgrades, enhancing the OES Seeds of Change Grant Program to help bring neighborhood-based climate solutions to life, and improving OES communication efforts with the community. Anna is a recent graduate of the University of Dayton with a dual degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice, and a certificate in Ethics & Leadership. Despite not having the typical background to spearhead environmental issues facing Cincinnati, she hopes that her passion for improving the welfare of communities through public service will impact those surrounding her. In Anna's free time, she enjoys reading novels, exploring comic books, watching basketball, and taking walks.

Also serving as a Public Ally through Americorps, Lauren Clark (above center) is grateful to be a part of the team striving to accomplish the goals laid out in the Green Cincinnati Plan. Her time at OES will be devoted to improving youth engagement in climate action planning and implementation, using community feedback to develop Resilience Hubs, and expanding greenspace in the city. Lauren is a recent graduate of the Ohio State University with a degree in Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability and a minor in City and Regional Planning. She hopes her education and passion for sustainability will help improve the environmental quality of Cincinnati and the welfare of her neighbors. When Lauren is not thinking about sustainability, she enjoys doing yoga, being outdoors, and trying (typically with questionable results) to cook whatever interesting recipe catches her eye on Pinterest.

Nolan Brown (above left) is excited to have joined the team! As an OES Fellow, Nolan will help to implement various actions of the Green Cincinnati Plan (GCP), including Electrify Cincy, and track the GCP’s goals. After earning a bachelor's degree in Physics from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, in 2023 and independently traveling Asia in Winter 2023-24, Nolan realized a deep need to serve the people of the earth and his community through combating climate change. To that end, he spent the Summer of 2024 performing conservation work through AmeriCorps in Duluth, MN. He is especially eager to bring his passion for serving people and the planet back to his hometown of Cincinnati. In his free time, Nolan loves to ride his bicycle and go dancing.

GCP Partner: Faith Communities Go Green

OES has selected GCP Partner, Faith Communities Go Green, to highlight for their determined and diligent work in energy efficiency.

Faith Communities Go Green (FCGG) is an organization dedicated to fostering the moral and spiritual connections of religion and environmentalism. Within this group, three working teams help champion priority actions from GCP focus areas including community activation, food, and buildings and energy. Modeled after a federal grant program, FCGG has established the Energy Efficiency Initiative which provides resources and assistance to faith institutions pursuing more affordable and sustainable energy solutions. The cohort includes over 50 congregations committed to lowering their emissions and energy burden. Cincinnati’s built environment represents a significant portion of local emissions and FCGG’s work helps bring OES’s net zero vision by 2050 to life.

To learn more about FCGG, visit their website here!

If your organization's mission aligns with any of the GCP Priority Actions, please visit our website to learn more about becoming an official GCP Partner.
