I initially resisted recording a solo podcast episode, Christine.

I'm far more interested in coaxing other people's stories out of them on my show. I love it when a guest who's been interviewed a lot says to me, "That's a great question⏤I haven't thought about that before!".

And I'm a bit sick of the sound of my own voice, between my own podcast and the many I guest on (which I still love doing, btw).

But this season's interviews are a little more intimate⏤and it seemed only fair for me to answer the questions I'm asking my guests to answer, and to give you a taste of what to expect this season.

Plus, I'm the only person who has heard every single one of my interviews and talks. I would guess that even my most devoted followers and friends will hear something in this week's episode that they didn't already know.

I would dearly love to hear directly from each and every one of you what you get the most out of from today's episode.

And I encourage you to keep listening for the far-more-fascinating stories of my guests in coming weeks!

Now, let's talk about...

Today's Podcast

Kicking off the season with a look back at my own personal brand origins and history, and some key questions I encourage everyone to revisit with themselves periodically.

Quantity vs. Quality?

If you were hoping to burnish your personal brand credentials via LinkedIn's gold "Top Voice" badge, you're too late⏤they've decided to stop rewarding quantity (of submissions to Collaborative Articles, AI-generated knowledge hubs) over quality (too many people were simply rewording the AI's already-minimal insights).

The platform will still award blue Top Voice badges (see Ann Handley's here) for genuinely influential leaders, as identified by LinkedIn's editorial team.

Who watches sponcon?

I don't benefit from this at all⏤I've just been so impressed by how influencer Nicole Story Dent's sponsored content fits right in with the fun attitude her followers enjoy in her organic content. I watched this bra advertisement like ten times because it's so hilarious.

Lesson: if people are connecting with your fun, approachable personality, then your content needs to respect and celebrate that⏤even when you're promoting a product for someone else.

Let's Talk About YOU

Personal Branding Prompt:

Think about what you wanted to be when you were little, Christine.

Think about how excited you were about this hypothetical future. What about it excited you most (even if it was just the thrilling sound the garbage truck made, which made you wish to drive it yourself someday)?

Can you make any connections⏤no matter how vague⏤to what excited you about that goal back then, and what you're doing now?

If not, is there any way to bring some of that spark into your work, or at least the way you present yourself to the world?

See you next week!
