A Baby Shower Kicks Off ‘Respect for LifeMonth

By Ruth Anne White, Catholic Charities Executive Director

I feel so fortunate to have joined the Catholic Charities team in time to celebrate Respect for Life month with folks throughout the Diocese. The first event of the month was hosted by Father McQuaide on Sun., Oct. 6 at St. Patrick Church, in partnership with the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Together, the parishioners held a baby shower for the women of Bayard House, the Catholic Charities maternity group home, which offers independent living skills and housing as a platform for forming healthy, happy families.

The donations they collected of new baby clothes, diapers, and a variety of items that the young parents can use to care for their children will benefit the families throughout the year. As an added blessing, the Knights of Columbus will match the value of these items with a cash donation!

I was joined by Stacy Brooks, our incredible Program Manager, and a resident there with her children from the Bayard House. Stacy and I were overwhelmed with the generosity of the volunteers and the opportunity to witness them carry out their faith in such a meaningful way.

I look forward to attending more wonderful Respect for Life events hosted throughout the month!

Eucharistic Congress Draws Thousands to Ocean City, MD

With such beautiful weather and backdrop at the Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland, Oct. 5, more than 2,000 people had time to pray, eat and relax during the Diocese of Wilmington Eucharistic Congress at the bayside facility in the Eastern Shore beach town.

The opening prayer came at 10am and the concluding Mass ended shortly before 6pm with breakout sessions, a film and lunch in between. The keynote address was presented by Archbishop Richard Henning, the soon-to-be leader of the Archdiocese of Boston. The homily was delivered by Bishop William Koenig of the Diocese of Wilmington.

October is Respect Life Month

We live in a society that rejects those who are weak, fragile, or vulnerable. Yet, it is precisely within these conditions that a person is most in need of our care and protection. Pope Francis reminds us that “every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth, experienced the world’s rejection.”

Jesus gave his very flesh to give us the gift of eternal life and invites us to the most profound experience of this gift in our celebration of the Eucharist. When we meet Jesus in the Eucharist, this encounter has the power to change us. The Eucharist has the power to transform the depths of our hearts

and the heart of our culture. United to the power of his Eucharistic Presence, may we work to ensure that each person has life—and has it in abundance.

Low Income Heating & Energy Assistance Program Success

A new client, Sarah, visited Catholic Charities to sign her brother Tom* up for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Tom, who is physically and mentally challenged, was acting out in the lobby. Our assistant manager, Martha*, went to see if she could help calm the situation down. Sarah* warned Martha that Tom, a veteran, was prone to lashing out. Sarah explained that she was financially supporting her brother, but after a recent job loss, was trying to find additional assistance for him.

During the interview, Tom became unruly, but Martha remained calm and took her time with him. They eventually found him eligible for the LIHEAP program. During the interview, Martha found out that the siblings did not live in the same household. She asked Sarah if she wanted to apply for the LIHEAP program as well and Sarah was also found eligible for the assistance program.

Sarah thanked Martha and said she was very pleased with the caring manner that Martha took with them. She told Martha that this was the first time she was able to get assistance for her brother because no other service organizations, including the veteran’s administrative offices, had patience with Tom's unruly behavior. In addition, Sarah was pleased that she was also eligible for the assistance program. Martha let them know if they had any questions or needed to apply for any of our other services, to ask for her and she would personally take care of them.

Martha always shows compassion and professionalism in her interactions with clients and is a great example of the values of the Catholic Charities.

October is the Month of the Rosary

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary in the Catholic Church because the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on Oct. 7th. The feast was established by Pope St. Pius V in 1571 to commemorate the Christian victory in the Battle of Lepanto. The battle prevented an Islamic invasion of Europe and is believed to have been won through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
