TEENS TAKE ACTION

PESA Supports Student Voter Drive at Fremont High

In honor of this past Tuesday being National Voter Registration Day, John C. Fremont High School hosted a voter registration booth aimed at engaging students in the democratic process. PESA’s support emphasized the importance of voting, even for high school students who are nearing voting age. The event served as a call to action for students to take charge of their future through civic engagement.

Ariel, a senior at Fremont and one of the students at the forefront of this initiative, shared her experience of helping to organize the event. “We as a class started this as a project, and it was initially just going to be a presentation,” she said. “But our school ended up hosting  an event, and we joined to table for pre-registration.” Ariel’s involvement highlights how students can be active participants in encouraging future change.

For many students, the act of pre-registering to vote may seem distant or unimportant. However, Ariel expressed a different perspective: “I think it’s important for teenagers to be pre-registered because there’s data showing that people in my age group are less likely to vote. It’s always people from the 50 to 60 age group who are actually voting... It gets us more involved and allows us to do things for ourselves because it is our future at the end of the day.”

This sentiment underscores a crucial point: engaging young people early in the democratic process ensures that they understand the power of their vote. High school voter registration drives, like the one at Fremont, allow students to feel more connected to their civic duties, fostering a sense of responsibility that lasts well into adulthood.

As Ariel pointed out, voting helps not only in shaping policy but also in keeping society prepared for whatever challenges may arise. By getting involved in pre-registration, these students are not just learning about history—they’re actively shaping it.
