LWV Kent's school supplies drive for King-Kennedy Community Center brings in 693 items

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our school supplies drive for the King-Kennedy Community Center (KKCC), with special thanks to League member Louise Ditchey for coordinating the effort. As Louise so aptly said, “Kent League of Women Voters have hearts as big as their civic drive.” Collectively, the League donated 693 items. They were packed into some of the dozens and dozens of backpacks that were handed out during the successful back-to-school event at KKCC.

Throughout July and August, LWV Kent members have been reaching out in underserved communities to talk about voting and to encourage unregistered and lapsed voters to participate. League members have been at four Portage Metropolitan Housing Authority (PMHA) farmers markets at various public housing sites in Ravenna and Kent. To fill in the gaps, PMHA will be distributing 500 Voting 1-2-3 cards to all their residents.

On August 17, the League went to the King-Kennedy Community Center back-to-school event in Ravenna. LWV Kent Board member Kate White provided a spin-the-wheel voting trivia game that proved to be a hit with both children and adults. Thank you, Kate! And thank you to everyone who volunteered at these outreach events: Sara Ashley-Cook, Brian Bialik, Vera Buk-Bjerre, Louise Ditchey, Barb Hipsman, Sharon Irwin, Sue Lanning, Iris Meltzer, Mary Myers, Diana Skok, Ann Ward and Kate White. Together we are building rapport, establishing trust, having fun and registering some new voters along the way!
