Volume 17, Issue 6| June 2024 | |
Dear Amy,
Each year, HandsOn NWNC hosts a celebratory breakfast to give out the year’s Governor's Volunteer Service Awards for Forsyth County. The GVSA program recognizes and honors those individuals who have made lasting impacts on our community by volunteering in an exemplary manner. The awards highlight the many ways in which people serve, with the categories ranging from taking care of animals in shelters to helping feed unhoused people. The awards make it clear Forsyth County is full of passionate, hardworking, community-oriented volunteers. Indeed, 16 individuals and groups were honored with an award this year. My employer, Blanco Tackabery & Matamoros, P.A., a full-service law firm located in here Winston-Salem, was proud to be a Lead Sponsor for the 2024 GVSA celebration for the first time and sent a team to the breakfast.
It was an inspiring event! Of course, it is great to watch our community’s outstanding contributors receive the recognition they have earned. But perhaps the best part of the breakfast is hearing the award recipients briefly tell their stories when they receive their award. This year, for instance, attendees had the chance to hear from diverse voices, including Susan Peatross of the Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center, a person dedicated to helping children with special needs succeed; Max Chen, a high schooler helping grow Kaleideum’s technology; and The Little Engines That Could, a team of three couples helping feed the community. Attending the breakfast will open your eyes to the thriving, diverse volunteer community in Forsyth County. It might even persuade you to get involved--whether with the awards next year, in other parts of HandsOn's impressive programming, or in serving other worthwhile causes in our community.
I hope I get to see you at the breakfast next May, or at another of HandsOn's outstanding programs.
Yours in service,
Henry
HandsOn NWNC Board Member
Associate Attorney, Blanco Tackabery

Applications Due July 15th for 2024-2025 Cohort!
Women's Emerging Leaders
| |
Part 1: Leadership Essentials for Women
Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 and 29th, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
Location: Senior Services, 2895 Shorefair Dr NW, Weinberg Room (see map)
We're excited to start seeing our cohort for the 2024-2025 Women's Emerging Leaders (WEL) program come together! We launched WEL over a decade ago to address gender, racial, and wage equity issues within the nonprofit sector by preparing, strengthening, and supporting women and non-binary folx for future leadership roles. Since then, more than 150 women, the majority of whom have been women of color, have benefitted from this transformational program! Watch the video below to hear from a current Executive Director who participated in the program prior to taking on her current leadership role.
WEL is a ten-month program consisting of two components: an intensive, two-day Leadership Essentials for Women workshop, scheduled in-person for August 28th and 29th, and enrollment in Nonprofit Essentials, a monthly series of half-day skill-building classes jointly sponsored by HandsOn NWNC and Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement that takes place from September through June.
Applicants must be mid-level female or non-binary staff (managers, program directors, program coordinators, and other professionals) located in and serving Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes, Surry, Yadkin, and Iredell Counties, who are committed to public service and interested in gaining leadership skills to enhance their ability to pursue leadership positions within their organizations or the nonprofit sector. The program is also open to Executive Directors of new or emerging nonprofit organizations who have little experience in their role as an Executive Director.
Again this year, WEL is being funded by a Forsyth County ARPA grant and is being subsidized for staff, Executive Directors, or board members of small and medium-sized nonprofits (budgets of $750,00 or less averaged over three years) that serve a majority of vulnerable, low-income, and marginalized Forsyth County populations disproportionally impacted by COVID. Please visit our website for more details and application instructions.
Cost: Just $10 FOR THE ENTIRE PROGRAM for eligible applicants! YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT!

The Value of a Volunteer Hour Increases Again in 2024!
Independent Sector, with the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland, announced in late April, in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, that they estimate the value of a volunteer hour in 2023 was $33.49, a 5.3% increase from 2022. The latest value is based on hourly earnings released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. More in-depth information on the methodology is available on their website.
In addition to the national average, which is still considered the "gold standard" of calculating the economic impact of volunteers, you can find on Independent Sector's website:
We know that many of you in our network use this calculation as part of your own way of measuring the impact of your programs and calculating your return on volunteer investment.

New Exempt Salary Thresholds Go Into Effect on July 1st!
Last month, the Department of Labor released their final rule raising the salary threshold for full-time, exempt workers under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regardless of job duties. The new threshold will be implemented in a two-step process, with the first phase increasing the salary amount to $43,888 per year beginning on July 1, 2024, and the second phase increasing the salary amount to $58,656 per year beginning on January 1, 2025. Our friends at the NC Center for Nonprofits have created two resources to help nonprofits better understand this new rule, its potential impact on North Carolina nonprofits, and possible compliance options. The first is a comprehensive analysis of the final overtime rule, including 15 compliance options and suggested next steps. They have also made a recent webinar, where they answered many common questions, available online.
However, as expected, in late May, several business groups filed a lawsuit challenging the new rules in federal court. The lawsuite was filed in the same court that stopped a similar 2016 from taking effect. Because the first phase takes effect in just a few weeks, it is possible that court could decide to move quickly on the case. In any event, it could take months before we all know, for certain, which parts of the rule will ultimately take effect and when. However, nonprofits shouldn't wait, but should plan now, especially with July 1 rigth acround the corner!
These developments are causing significant anxiety for many nonprofits, especially on the heels of numerous studies noting an overall decline in charitable giving between 2022 and 2023. These reports highlight the need for Congress to establish a universal charitable deduction that would help offset recent reductions in individual philanthropy by encouraging people to give more generously to nonprofits. Foundations and other funders will also need to consider increasing their giving to ensure the same level of services provided by their nonprofit partners can be sustained going forward.

Sign On to Support Continued Federal Volunteer Generation Funding!
The States for Service Coalition, the policy arm of America’s Service Commissions, is preparing an organizational sign-on letter to ask Congress to appropriate $30 million for the Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) in FY25. This is the third sign-on letter in support of VGF since it was created in 2009 as part of the Serve America Act. VGF is the only federal level volunteer engagement funding available and it has tremendous opportunity to expand to support volunteer infrastructure throughout the country. For the past three years, these funds have supported organizations throughout NC, including HandsOn, although NC was not renewed for funding in the coming year.
Since these funds have supported us and our network in recent years, we're asking to you to consider co-signing the letter. The hope is that increasing funding to $30 million will enable every state service commission (including NC!) to access VGF to support volunteer engagement. Please sign on before Friday, June 14th. Please contact ASC directly with any questions, and thank you for your consideration!
