The Powell Street Festival
On August 3rd and 4th, Tonari Gumi proudly participated in the Powell Street Festival. Our Food Booth featured Hiyashi Chuka (cold noodles) this year, while our Community Booth offered kimono, crafts, and rummage items. We deeply thank the many dedicated volunteers who helped run our booths and the kitchen. Your hard work made our participation a success! We also extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed donations to the festival. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

8月3日と4日、隣組はパウエル祭に参加しました。今年のフードブースでは冷やし中華やお饅頭などを、またコミュニティブースでは着物や手芸品、雑貨などを販売しました。ブースやキッチンの運営を手伝ってくださった多くの献身的なボランティアの々に深く感謝いたします。皆さんの懸命な働きにより、私たちの参加は大成功に終わりました！また、このフェスティバルの為に寄付を寄せてくださった多くの方々にも心より感謝申し上げます。

2024 Tonari Gumi Charity Golf Classic
At this year’s Charity Golf Classic, Tonari Gumi raised $91,000, which is the largest amount ever raised through our golf tournaments. This was only possible thanks to the contributions of all our sponsors, participants and volunteers, in particular our Matching Donor, Mr. Ken Shinozaki. We welcomed 144 golfers this year, with 174 people attending the dinner party afterward.

2024隣組 チャリティーゴルフ クラシック
今年の隣組チャリティーゴルフでは、総額91,000ドルを集めることに成功しました。これは、当団体のゴルフトーナメントで集めた金額としては過去最高額のものとなりました。この成果は、スポンサーの皆様、参加者の皆様、サポートボランティアの皆様そして、特にマッチングドナーの篠崎健様のご支援のおかげで達成する事ができました。今回のイベントには総勢144名のゴルファーが参加し、その後のディナーパーティーには174名の方が出席しました。

Community Event with Japan Rugby Team, Scribes Kids' Rugby Team, and TG Kids
On August 22nd, we had the pleasure of joining a special community event featuring the Japan Rugby team, the local kids' rugby team Scribes, Tonari Gumi Kids, and TG members and volunteers. The Japan team spent time teaching the kids various rugby skills, providing them with a unique and memorable experience. After the training, both the kids and TG members were thrilled to have a photo session with the players, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.
Additionally, TG Kids and the Scribes Rugby team participated in the halftime activity on August 25th during the official game between Japan and Canada. They had a fantastic opportunity to perform in front of an enthusiastic and cheerful audience at BC Place.

ラグビー日本代表、キッズラグビーチーム「スクライブス」、隣組の子供たちとのコミュニティイベントに参加しました！
8月22日、ラグビー日本代表、地元のキッズラグビーチーム「スクライブズ」、隣組の子供たち、そして隣組のメンバーさん、ボランティアさんが揃って、特別なコミュニティイベントに参加することができました。ラグビー日本代表チームは、子供たちに様々なラグビー技術を教え、ユニークで思い出に残る体験を与えてくれました。トレーニングの後、子供たちも隣組のメンバーも大喜びで、選手たちとの記念撮影を行い、一生の思い出を写真に収めました。
さらに、隣組の子供たちと「スクライブズ」チームは、8月25日の日本対カナダの公式戦のハーフタイムのアクティビティーに参加しました。BCプレイスに集まった熱狂的で陽気な観客の前でパフォーマンスを披露する素晴らしい機会を得ました。

Bon Odori at Maple Ridge:
A New Community Tradition
On August 10th, the Japanese community in Maple Ridge came together for a new event, Bon Odori. Tonari Gumi participated by setting up a Community Booth to introduce our organization. The day featured Taiko drumming, Otowa Ryu dance, a Sumo demo, Kimono/Yukata dressing, and an Origami booth for kids. At the end of the event, many participants joined in the Bon Odori dance, showcasing the cultural unity of the community.

8月10日、メイプルリッジの日系コミュニティが新しいイベント、「BON ODORI (盆踊り)」のために集まりました。隣組はコミュニティブースを設け、隣組の紹介を行いました。当日は、太鼓演奏、音羽流ダンス、相撲の実演、着物・浴衣の着付け、子供向けの折り紙ブースなどが行われました。イベントの最後には、多くの参加者が盆踊りに参加し、地域の文化的一体感をアピールしました。

“Good morning”
I was greeted with welcoming smiles and a friendly atmosphere at the Tonari Gumi office. This happened every day throughout my time at Tonari Gumi. No matter how busy the staff might be, they always stopped for a moment to greet anyone who opened the door to Tonari Gumi.
From day one, I was warmly welcomed by the wonderful staff at the office. The commitment to community support from both staff and volunteers at Tonari Gumi fostered an environment that felt like a second home—a home away from home.
One of the highlights during my time as a summer staff was engaging directly with community members. Whether I was helping at the community gardens, assisting with programs in the office, or simply lending an ear to seniors who came to sit and relax at the center, each interaction provided invaluable lessons and moments that I cherish dearly.
During my time at Tonari Gumi, I had the opportunity to film and interview the pioneers of this organization. As I interviewed the pioneers and read the books Spirit of the Issei: The Story of Tonari Gumi and A Dream of Riches, I came to appreciate that their narratives were more than just personal anecdotes; they were rich tapestries of history, culture, and kindness. Listening to the stories told by those who greatly contributed to the history of Tonari Gumi transported me back to their times and reminded me of the significance of celebrating the heritage and the positive impact of this organisation on the Japanese-Canadian community.
Working at Tonari Gumi was certainly one of the best experiences I have ever had. I am sad that my time there has come to an end, but I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude. The connections—or, to put it in the Japanese way, kizuna (絆)—I have made and the experiences I have had will remain with me long after this summer.

～隣組での思い出～
「おはようございます」
私は毎朝、隣組のオフィスで温かい笑顔と親しみやすい雰囲気に迎えられました。これは、隣組での滞在中、毎日続きました。スタッフがどれほど忙しくても、隣組のドアを開けた誰に対しても必ず挨拶をしてくれました。
初日から、私はオフィスの素晴らしいスタッフに温かく迎えられました。スタッフとボランティアの皆さんが行っている地域支援への熱意が、隣組を第2の家、まるで故郷のように感じさせる環境を作り出していました。
夏のスタッフとして働く中で、地域の方々と直接交流できたことは、私にとって特に印象に残る経験でした。コミュニティガーデンでの手伝いや、オフィスでのプログラムの支援、また隣組に来てくつろぐ高齢者の方々に耳を傾けることなど、どのような場面でも、私が得た学びと瞬間は非常に貴重で、大切なものです。
隣組での滞在中、この組織の先駆者たちを撮影し、インタビューする機会がありました。彼らにインタビューし、『一世の魂：隣組物語・The Spirit of the Issei: The Story of Tonari Gumi』や『千金の夢・A Dream of Riches』などの本を読む中で、彼らの物語が単なる個人的なエピソード以上のものであることに気づきました。それは歴史や文化、優しさに満ちた豊かな物語でした。隣組の歴史に大きく貢献した方々が語る話を聞くことで、当時の彼らの時代に引き戻され、この組織が日本系カナダ人コミュニティに与えた素晴らしい影響とその遺産を祝うことの重要性を改めて実感しました。
隣組で働いたことは、私にとって間違いなく最高の経験の一つでした。ここでの時間が終わってしまうことは悲しいですが、深い感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。日本語で言うところの「絆（きずな）」と表現できるようなつながりや、ここでの経験は、夏が終わった後も長く私の心に残ることでしょう。

On August 21st, we held a successful summer clean-up at our facility. Our dedicated regular volunteers, joined by international students from Douglas College, worked tirelessly to prepare the space for the upcoming term. Their hard work and enthusiasm made a significant impact, ensuring that our facility is clean and welcoming for everyone.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with our upcoming events and activities. Your support is invaluable to us, and we appreciate any time you can give.
Here are the volunteer opportunities available:
Prep & Set-up for Programs (weekly)
Assist with program set-ups on weekday afternoons, Monday through Friday. Helping out just once a week would make a big difference!
iPad Group Class Assistant (Japanese)
Assist with the iPad class on Thursdays: October 10th, 17th, 24th, and November 7th, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm.
Mail-out Assistance #1
Dates: October 22nd to October 25th
Details: Assist with preparing and mailing out materials for the Donation Pledge Letter.

毎週月曜日、10am-12pmのチビッコクラスでチビッコ達と一緒にアクティビティーをしたり、クラスのヘルプをします。

We have updated the private sessions to Q&A sessions to foster more collaborative teaching. We noticed that some people have similar questions, so by creating an open-teaching time, students can group up and learn together. The Q&A time is drop-in, so availability is limited. You don’t need to register to join, however, it is good to let us know if you’re coming.

Yoshiko Mukuyama 104th Birthday
Yoshiko Mukuyama who has just celebrated her 104th birthday with family and friends has been a fervent member and contributor of Tonari Gumi for the last 30 years or so. We, the family and friends of hers were commenting and joking at the party, that she was the most healthiest and young-at-heart amongst us all!
She was an active member of the T.G Outreach program, and she enjoyed many outings with us for fine-dining, picnics, etc., and even to the horse races! We did have some good times together!
We all have to ask her secret for such a healthy and vibrant long life!
Mrs. Mukuyama, a very Happy 104th birthday to you from all of us! We also look forward to many more!

Online workshop registration is open for the Seniors Safety Series and Personal Planning Series presented by Seniors Helping Seniors - Seniors’ Health and Wellness Institute (COSCO)
The Seniors’ Health & Wellness Institute is pleased to again host a series of Personal Planning workshops and a series of Safety workshops. All workshops are offered weekly and will be conducted via Zoom.
You may opt for only those sessions you feel are currently most relevant for you, but it is highly recommended that you attend all sessions in the series for a comprehensive perspective. Please note that you must register for each session individually.
Safety Series - Wednesdays beginning September 4th.
This online workshop series focuses on safety. It offers essential information and tips for everything from fall prevention and preparation for emergencies through to scam and fraud avoidance.

Starting September 3, 2024 (Tuesday), appointments will be required for applications and notifications at the consular window. However, some procedures do not need a reservation, so please check the website and make an appointment as necessary.
To alleviate congestion at the consular window and speed up services, we are introducing an online reservation system for passport applications, various certifications, visa applications, and family register/nationality notifications starting September 3, 2024 (Tuesday).
Reservations are not required to receive passports, various certifications, visas, etc., but please check the reception hours before visiting. Additionally, consultations for overseas voter registration and emergency issues are accepted at any time.

New phishing scam targets BC Hydro customers as of Aug. 13, 2024
The BC RCMP is warning BC Hydro customers about a new scam where customers are tricked into providing personal information by calling a fraudulent BC Hydro customer support number.
To avoid falling victim to scams, BC Hydro wants its customers to know:
• It does not collect credit card or bank account information over the phone or by email or text.
• If an account is in arrears, BC Hydro will send several notices by mail and use an auto dialer to remind customers to make a payment. Customers can also check their account status at any time at bchydro.com.
• BC Hydro’s customer service number is 1-800-BCHYDRO. Be vigilant if you are contacted by any other number claiming to be BC Hydro.

BC州連邦警察（BCRCMP）の発表によると、BC Hydroを装った偽サイトについての注意喚起をしています。新しい電力サービスの設定やサービスの再接続をするよう顧客に促し、表示されている電話番号に電話をさせ、身元確認と称して個人情報を盗み取るフィッシング詐欺が行われているとして、BCRCMPは以下のとおり注意を呼び掛けています。
○ BC Hydroは、電話やEメール、携帯電話のテキストメッセージでクレジットカードや銀行口座の情報を収集しません。
○ 支払いが滞納している場合、顧客には郵送にて通知し、自動ダイヤルを使って通知をする。顧客は、自身のアカウント情報をbchydro.comにて確認出来ます。

Japanese translation of Ken Adachi, "The Enemy That Never Was, A History of Japanese Canadians"

This is my Japanese translation of Ken Adachi, The Enemy That Never Was, published in 1976. It is available on the website of the Japanese Cultural Society of Edmonton.
In 1959, the All-Canadian Nikkei Association recognized the need for a comprehensive history of Japanese Canadians and asked Ken Adachi, a Nisei and the humanities critic for the Toronto Star newspaper, to write a comprehensive history. After many twists and turns, the biography was published in 1976 as The Enemy That Never Was.
The History of Japanese Canadians, the Enemy That Never Was begins with the story of Japan's isolationist period in Chapter 1, continues through the experiences of discrimination against Japanese Canadians before and during World War II, and ends with a description of the Japanese Canadian community in the early 1970s. The book vividly describes the history of Japanese Canadians, especially the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of the Nisei born in Canada. Read it as an introduction to Japanese Canadian history.
