St. Nicholas’ Mission is to actively share Christ’s love for all people.
Our vision is to strive to be a welcoming community who worships a caring and merciful God, proclaims the Gospel, and promotes justice, peace, and love.

Book Club News: Wendell Berry for October
Only one of us has reported that they loved Nicked. Two of us grew to appreciate it and all the rest present at the September meeting hated it. An adventurous quest for St Nick’s bones did not save the story for most of us.
For October we have chosen an author closer to home — Wendell Berry, 90-year-old Kentucky author of 90 novels, stories, essays and poems. This time you may choose the Berry work you wish or read his acclaimed novel Hannah Coulter.
Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy loves this book and offers this review:
“In this atmospheric novel, an older Hannah looks back on her life and reflects on what she has lost, and those she has loved. I adore Berry, who writes gorgeous, thoughtful, piercing novels, and this is one of his finest. Contemplative, wistful, and moving.”
The next meeting is Wednesday, October 2 following Evening Prayer at 5 pm.

Did You Know?
Lay Ministers Keep the Services Going
Are you interested in serving the congregation of St. Nicholas on Sunday mornings? Consider becoming part of the lay ministry team.
Open positions include:
Usher/Greeter: Say "hello" to people as they arrive, direct visitors to helpful resources, and let congregants know when it's their turn for communion. Oh, and you get to shake everyone down for money with that fancy offering plate.
Crucifer: Wear an alb, carry the cross, don't trip.
Lector: Read the lessons, take a bow when "Mahershalalhashbaz" trips flawlessly off your tongue.
Virtual Minister: Keep the livestream streaming. Great for the "behind the scenes" type.
Eucharistic Minister: Oh, you know who they are, up there at the altar with their wine cup and their bell. With a little training, you can be that cool, too.
Contact Erin in the office to get started.

St. Nicholas to Host Blessing of the Animals
On Sunday, October 6 at 5:00 p.m., there will be a Blessing of the Animals here on the grounds at St. Nicholas.
The service will include prayers, hymns, and readings that celebrate our unbounded love for God’s creatures. It will be held outside, weather permitting, but will move under the porch in the case of rain.
Attendees are encouraged to bring pets, or mementos of previous pets, to be blessed. Young children may bring their favorite stuffed animal.
For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, dogs must be leashed and all animals must be in the owners’ control at all times. Clean-up stations will be available. St. Nicholas will provide refreshments for everyone - humans included!
The Blessing of the Animals is traditionally associated with St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is October 4. Of all the saints, Francis is particularly remembered for his love of animals and nature.
Hope to see you there!

Stand by: We are experiencing Technical Difficulties
You may have received an opt-in form (or two) to receive communications from the church via text. This form appears to be working for some people but not for others. Constant Contact customer service as yet has no explanation for the problem - high hopes that it gets resolved soon. In the meantime, if you were able to opt in, please respond to the follow-up text to complete the process.

Thanks from the Butzons
Many thanks to those who responded to the call to help our own Butzon family as they faced multiple challenges, all at once.
From Chris and Andy: Thank you all for your thoughts and for your love, but most of all for your prayers. Andy and I have been busy guarding our health, and we have been successful.
Thank you for your culinary generosity. We are both recuperating nicely, and will be back in the game soon. But help with things to eat is greatly appreciated. At this point we are all set in that regard, and looking forward to enjoying the delicacies you all have provided.
