Seeking the Extraordinary, Interesting & Elusive

A late | 2nd Qtr 2024

Greetings Adventurers!

On an African Safari, we seek the extraordinary, be it exceptional wildlife, the Big Five, a range of activities, a picturesque camp, or a sundowner to mark the gentle golden end of the day. Being in the bush brings a unique sensation, slowing down to nature's circadian rhythm, away from cell phones and technology. It's a chance to inhale the clean air, stimulate your senses, live in the present, and feel the thrill and amazement of the wild natural world.

We're thrilled to bring you updates on traveling to the various splendid locations throughout Africa. We understand that interests change over time, and if you prefer not to receive our newsletter, you're welcome to click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this page.

Seeking the Extraordinary ~

The Fives

Seeking the extraordinary means looking to the wild beat of nature, a rhythm that beats to its own drum as Africa replay the unforgettable song that call many of us back time and again.

One of the safari extraordinary are the "Big Five" game animals (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and the Africa Buffalo). The term was coined by big-game hunters to refer to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt for, now a highlight of a photographic safari.

There is much more that makes your African safari game drive extraordinary, from the birdlife to all forms of flower and fauna including - "The Small Five" (Ant Lion, Buffalo Weaver, Elephant Shrew, Leopard tortoise) who can be found on walking safaris and desert areas such as the Kalahari Reserve.

The Serengeti of the Sea’ … the "Marine Big Five" are easily found along the coastline of southern Africa, especially at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a mecca for Southern Right Whales known to come here to mate and calve. Bottlenose Dolphins come by the hundreds and can be seen hunting strategically on large shoals of fish. Robust Cape Fur Seals populate the rugged islands surrounding the coastline while endangered African Penguins live in colonies amongst them. The majestic Great White Shark reign the waters and can be seen up close and personal for an awe-inspiring experience. Together, they make up the ‘Marine Big 5’ – a class on its own to rival its land-based counterparts.

Seeking the Interesting

In seeking the interesting Africa offers so many exceptional experiences:

Beeline for Namibia where you'll be lured by otherworldly landscapes including Sossusvlei, a stunning salt and clay pan surrounded by towering red dune and rare desert adapted wildlife. Not to be missed:

Highlights of Namibia.

The translocation of the Eastern Black Rhino is a testament to a country's commitment to conservation and milestone for the restoration of Akagera National Park's natural diversity. With the Rhinos back in Rwanda you can now see the Big Five along with one of the most stunning and incredible experiences on the continent - A trek to visit the Mountain Gorilla on this itinerary: Highlights of Rwanda

Seeking the Elusive

Rare and magnificent sightings of elusive wildlife can sometimes be seen on night drives.... such as two Bat-eared foxes having a romantic moment, an Aardvark scuttling across the road, and a pack of Painted dogs (African Wild Dog), feasting on a recent kill.

Lions, are more active at night, their bone-chilling roars can be heard from 3 miles away. Even though you are safe in your vehicle and guides never put guests in danger, there’s a thrilling frisson of adrenaline in the air, to remind us that the bush is the animals’ domain and we are all just incredibly fortunate visitors.

A truly unique experience to seek the elusive is a sleep- out under Africa's vast skies in a Skybed, not your ordinary safari camp, overlooking the waterhole for nightly visitors. Though you may not get much sleep it will be one of the wildest and most wonderful of safari experiences. Experience it here:

Botswana's Hidden Migration

In Kenya's conservancies of Laikipia and Loisaba over 80 different mammal species are found including sanctuaries for endangered animals such as Grevys Zebra and reticulated giraffe. The black rhino, the only remaining viable population of Jacksons hartebeest and an expanding population of the globally endangered African Wild dog can also be found.

Selecting your Safari ~ East, Southern, National Parks, Private reserves ?

Africa is a vast continent with endless possibilities to explore and hundreds of safari destinations within National Parks and private game reserves.

National Parks offer an abundance of wildlife like those found in East Africa's Masai Mara or Serengeti, home to the great migration. With a variety of lodging options at various budget levels, safari activities can be restricted for conservation reasons.

Private game reserves offer an intimate and exclusive safari experience. With access restricted to guests staying in private lodges or camps they have fewer activity restrictions, greater proximity to animals and offer a more intimate and up-close to wildlife, safari.

Why AlphaGal Safaris ?

Embarking on an unexpected journey of dietary discovery to avoid allergic reaction was not in my plans. As a serious foodie the transition faced when diagnosed with Alpha-Gal in July 2023 has been interesting. Leaving behind not only all (mammal) meat products (Bacon! Steak! BBQ!), Dairy (Cheese! Ice Cream!) but also Mammal -free by-products in Beverages (Wine, Beer, Liquor), personal hygiene (Soap, shampoo, Lotion, Vitamins, etc., etc.) was a serious undertaking.

Dining out and traveling posed additional restrictions as I was not a true Vegetarian or Vegan – able to eat Eggs, Poultry, and Seafood.

Alpha Gal Safaris was developed as a tool to help our clients with AGS experience the remarkable beauty of Africa, with all its unique destinations, wildlife, and culture in a dietary friendly environment. We work with lodges and camps who provide delicious meals & experiences tailored to your specific dietary needs and for our Adventurers to enjoy the ultimate African Journey.
