Director's Note

As my first summer at Woodlawns begins to turn toward the Autumn I am excited for the opportunities and challenges ahead of us. I will also continue my thanks to the Woodlawn community for the support I have received as I have settled into my role. These initial weeks have been a series of firsts, not just for me as executive director, but all of Woodlawn as we grow with the new opportunities presented by the Barn.

Our educational programming has continued with lectures, classes, and walks through the grounds and trails. The museum has been kept busy by regular visits, but make sure to schedule yours in September before the Black House Museum is closed for the season! We have also made tremendous progress with our archives project. The full Black family papers and the records of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations have been moved into our professional archival storage in the Barn. The process will provide opportunities for engagement and research with these great resources. September promises to continue our offerings with a renowned pianoforte concert, science programming, Maine history lectures, Autumn Gold, and more! Make sure to check the website for more information on these events. The Barn remains available for rental opportunities for businesses, nonprofits, and private events.

All of this progress has been made possible by our community and supporters. Whether you were a part of the Campaign for Woodlawn, attend programs or events, walk the trails, or visit the museum we are grateful for the support and encouragement we have received. All of our partners will be critical to the future of Woodlawn and our goals to provide educational and recreational opportunities for the Ellsworth and Hancock County communities.

With gratitude,

Evan Moats

Executive Director

Shaw's Reusable Bag Program

We are so excited to share that Woodlawn has been selected to benefit from the Shaw’s GIVE BACK WHERE IT COUNTS Reusable Bag Program, which makes it easy for shoppers to contribute to their local communities.

For the month of September, whenever a $3.00 GIVE BACK WHERE IT COUNTS Reusable Bag is purchased at the Shaw’s located in Ellsworth, $1 will be donated to Woodlawn. This is a great way to broaden awareness and help our cause.

The Shaw’s GIVE BACK WHERE IT COUNTS Reusable Bag Program, which launched in March 2019, is a reusable bag program that facilitates community support with the goal to make a difference in the communities where shoppers live and work.

Let’s get started! Share the news with friends and family. Call, send emails, and post on social media. The more people who purchase the GIVE BACK WHERE IT COUNTS Reusable Bag in September, the greater the donation we will receive from Shaw’s!

Bricks at the Barn

Our initiative ‘Bricks at the Bar’ is underway to address the final expenses of the Barn.

We invite you to get your name or that of a loved one etched into a Brick to be installed on the Barn grounds. These funds will allow us to finalize the last details for this community asset. We have so far been able to host a wide variety of events and programming in the new space. August alone was host to weddings, receptions, board meetings, education programs, croquet tournaments, teas, and more!

As we grow the variety of offerings at the Barn this project will guarantee the grounds and interiors of the Barn match the beauty of the rest of Woodlawn’s grounds. Join us in establishing the foundation of Woodlawn’s future.

Thank you!
