THE LIFE OF MOSES – LESSON 9

MOSES’ FIRST FAILURE

In Exodus 4:19-28 we see Moses leaving Midian to go to Egypt as God had told him to do. He took his wife Zipporah and two sons on the journey.

Verse 24 (KJV) says something that sounds like God would be defeating his own plan. It says, “And it came to pass by the way (route) in the inn, that [Jehovah] met him, and sought to kill him.” How could a dead Moses free the Hebrew slaves? It obviously means something beyond our understanding as written.

The Amplified Version gives a rendition that is better for our understanding. It reads, “Now it happened at the lodging place that the LORD [Jehovah] met Moses and sought to kill him [making him deathly ill because he had not circumcised one of his sons]. Then Zipporah took a flint knife and cut off the foreskin of her son and threw it at Moses’ feet, and said, ‘Indeed you are a husband of blood to me.’ So, he let Moses alone [to recover]. At that time Zipporah said, ‘You are a husband of blood’ because of the circumcision.”

Moses had been negligent in circumcision, which was a sin of omission. It had to be made right with God. His wife knew what had to be done, so she took care of it. Circumcision was the mark of God’s covenant with Israel.

Moses would later fail again in this same matter. All the males, young and old, that he led out of Egypt had been circumcised while still in Egypt. However, during the forty years of wilderness wanderings, none of the males born in the wilderness had been circumcised. This was a failure in Moses’ leadership. Joshua would have to have them all circumcised after he led them across Jordan into Canaan and before they could go any further into the land.

Have we, like Moses, ever been negligent in the things of God? Have we always done what He requires or expects of us? I am sure we all have had our failings. Let us make it right and not leave it for someone else to fix for us.

FEAR – THE PARALYZING SPIRIT

Satan has used fear since the beginning in the Garden. He brought doubt and fear into the minds of Adam and Eve, convincing them that God was holding out on them. It cost them the garden, and the sin was passed down through their blood line to each of us.

Satan brought fear to Abraham when he told King Abimelech of Gerar that Sarah was his sister. In Genesis 20:11 the King confronted him when he learned who she really was, and Abraham said, “… Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake. And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.”

Later, that same fear controlled Isaac in the exact same way with King Abimelech of the Philistines. He told his herdsmen that Rebekah was his sister to avoid being killed like his father Abraham. (Genesis 26)

When the angel Gabriel came to Zachariah announcing that he would have a son, in Luke 1:13 he said, “…Fear not…”

In 2 Timothy 1:7 it says this about fear. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” This lets us know that fear is a spirit. 

Recently I dealt with fear, but God gave me a revelation. I have bound it and cast it out, but he showed me this: My fear of losing my husband was greater than the joy I had of loving him.” When I received this revelation, it opened my eyes to my error. I was allowing fear to control me rather than love.

 In 1 John 4:18 it says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

By allowing the spirit of fear into our lives we push out God’s love. We must never allow that to happen. I have learned a lesson. Whatever is going on in your life, remember God’s love will cast out the fear. Embrace the love of God every moment and no fear will come and paralyze you. 

If you are walking in fear, then repent. Ask God to forgive you and to fill you with his love. Be set free! Be determined not to let fear paralyze you.

Just know that God still prepares a way out for His children today; Just as He did for Jonah in the Bible days. I’m sure all of us HAVE experienced or WILL experience a WHALE in our lives at some point on life’s journey. Oh yes, for a WHALE is simply someone or something that RESCUES you and keeps you from going in the WRONG DIRECTION. So give God praise for keeping you safe in the midst of all life’s storms

Monday Thought For Today

Holding Onto Jesus

What does that really mean?

I had a vision of a storm and I was being blown away. But then I saw that God had me and I was holding on to Him. Then the scene changed and I heard Him say, “I am holding onto you.” I saw His arm stretched out and He had my arm in His hand. As the wind blew I had such a peace that as He held me I was going to be okay.

In holding onto Him, I could lose my grip. But when God is the One holding you, you will come through the storm because His strength is greater.



Here is a thought: when we ask Jesus into our heart, we are reaching out to Him. We are placing our hand in His. Figuratively.

Then when the storms of life come our way, it is then that Jesus takes hold of us and holds us through the storm.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

 Will it hum with grace divine?

Some people will remember.

 One others will remember.

 When all’s done,
