May 2024 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

“Community. Structure. Encouragement. Peace. That’s what The Healing WELL has given me, and that’s what has made my recovery possible.”

EM’s statement captures what we honor as we launch our 2024 summer appeal:  the stories of recovery, the signs of victory, the manifestations of hope. Amidst the sea of media messages about despair in the Tenderloin, we set our sights on potential and promise. We foster healing and growth, especially among our neighbors journeying toward recovery from substance use disorders. In this newsletter, we feature several Healing WELL activities from the past eight weeks - a sampling of what we do to help make healing possible among our housed and unhoused neighbors.

You can directly support these life-giving activities. Please make a donation to The Healing WELL today. Join our community in illuminating the Tenderloin neighborhood.

Sincerely,

Kathy Curran, Director

P.S. Sunday, June 23rd, we’re hosting “Harmonies of Hope,” a sound bath experience to raise funds for our recovery support services. Please join us! See the flyer at the bottom of this newsletter, and SIGN UP here.

Flower Arranging Workshop

In April a neighbor who runs a floral business out of his small apartment led a flower arranging workshop for some of our friends. His talent, ingenuity and resilience inspired us all. We develop the capacity to address our challenges by building off our strengths. Your donation helps cover gift cards for our participant leaders who run these workshops.

Forum with Aaron Peskin

We host neighborhood discussions about pressing issues. In April, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin joined us; in May, Supervisor Dean Preston; in June, it will be Mayoral candidate Daniel Lurie. (More to come!) Through these, we raise our collective voice about issues central to the Tenderloin's well-being. Your donation makes these forums possible.

City Guides Tour

On Memorial Day, our Healing Through Nature group joined a City Guides tour - learning about the history of San Francisco’s Ferry Building and the surrounding area. Every month we host a field trip, inviting our participants to see beyond their struggles and to celebrate the Bay Area's beauty. Your donation covers our neighbors' participation in these field trips.

Hospitality Morning

On Thursdays we welcome dozens of our neighbors for breakfast, foot care, art and companionship. We meet people's physical needs and plant the seeds for engagement in wellness programs - while everyone benefits from our warm and welcoming space. Your donation covers fresh fruit and healthy breakfasts for hundreds of people every year.

Pampering Afternoon

In April we hosted an afternoon of massage and facials for Arabic-speaking refugees and immigrants. This was envisioned by one of our participant leaders who recognized the need for a warm sanctuary for Yemeni refugee women. Through our Leadership Program, our participants creatively help their neighbors in their healing journeys. Your donation supports our participant leaders as they outreach and foster healing in the neighborhood.

Cadillac Wellness Fair

On April 30, we hosted a Spring Wellness Fair for Cadillac Hotel residents, and dozens of other neighbors. This project was made possible with funding by www.sodatax-sf.org. The event included a healthy lunch and cooking demonstration in Spanish and English, as well as a Gentle Movement class, Zumba class and tabling outside with other community resources. Thanks to all of our donors who make this work possible!

Please consider making an on-line donation to The Healing WELL. Checks addressed to "The Healing WELL/Community Initiatives" are also welcome. Please mail them to:
