Misinformation is Spooky: Media and News Literacy

Thursday l October 31 l 12 - 1 PM

Women's Center

Have you ever come across a news article and thought the information sounded sketchy? On college campuses, students have spoken about how misleading news sources (misinformation, disinformation, clickbait, propaganda, etc.) have affected their views on civil discourse, specifically relating to the elections.

In today’s busy media and news landscape, students are inundated with “fake news,” “disinformation,” and “alternative facts,” and it can be challenging to identify trustworthy information sources and spot bias.

In this workshop, we will discuss “fake news” and how to spot it, information bubbles, media literacy, and learn how to fact-check and evaluate information.

All are welcome! Halloween treats will be served.

Gender Bites Fall 2024 Calendar

Light refreshments will be provided.

The Women's Center is located in the original student center. We are above Blue Pepper and across from Main Gym.

STEMinist Network

The STEMinist Network is a drop-in program that creates opportunities for gender marginalized undergraduate students in STEM to connect and build community within the larger context of STEM as a male dominated field.

We focus on gender and science, community building, and professional development. We use the term “gender marginalized” to recognize the impact of sexism on many communities including, but not limited to, transgender women, cisgender women, transgender men, non-binary individuals, and gender non-conforming individuals.

Most of Dr. Rice’s 42-year career was spent caring for mid-life women, and her long tenure in practice gave her firsthand experience following women from their reproductive years well into their postmenopausal years. As an internist specializing in chronic disease management, she has been particularly concerned about how the menopause transition affects women’s health across their lifespans.

She is a member of the Menopause Society (formerly the North American Menopause Society) and the International Menopause Society. She has been active in her community raising menopause awareness.

This event is sponsored by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) and the Women’s Center.
