There are a few places in the world that I hold dear: Snoqualmie Falls and Alki Beach in Washington State. Crisfield, Maryland. Dog Beach in Dunedin, Florida. This library.
I know I’ve said this before, but it’s true. In times of joy, I want to celebrate with everyone who comes in the door - patrons and staff alike. In times of sadness, I want to come and sit quietly in the atmosphere created by amazing people and place. As I’m still finding out so much about IVPL, every day is an opportunity for discovery.
Meet our Artist of the Month, Natalie Searl, Tuesday, October 1, 9:00-12:00
Her artwork will be on display in the library through the end of October.
“It’s not just about taking pictures: it’s about appreciating the world we live in. I like to share my appreciation.”

The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen
When Jessica is told she’ll never run again, she puts herself back together—and learns to dream bigger than ever before. The acclaimed author of Flipped delivers a powerful and healing story.
Jessica thinks her life is over when she loses a leg in a car accident. She’s not comforted by the news that she’ll be able to walk with the help of a prosthetic leg. Who cares about walking when you live to run?
As she struggles to cope, Jessica feels that she’s both in the spotlight and invisible. People who don’t know what to say act like she’s not there. Jessica’s embarrassed to realize that she’s done the same to a girl with CP named Rosa. A girl who is going to tutor her through all the math she’s missed. A girl who sees right into the heart of her.
With the support of family, friends, a coach, and her track teammates, Jessica may actually be able to run again. But that’s not enough for her now. She doesn’t just want to cross finish lines herself—she wants to take Rosa with her.

I Want My Mummy!
Thursday, October 17 — 7:00—8:15 PM
Community Room
In an effort to better understand why ancient Egyptian mummies hold such a fascination in popular culture, this lecture presents a history of Western civilization’s centuries-long interaction with ancient Egypt’s human remains, how attitudes regarding those mummies changed through time, and, how mummy-related folklore still influences the modern world.
This talk includes unpublished images of the actual mummies of several of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs, as well as behind the scenes images of 4,500-year-old mummies as they emerged from the sands during Dr. Phillips’ own recent archaeological excavations in the cemeteries adjacent to the Great Pyramids at Giza, Egypt.
NOTE: This presentation contains images of mummified ancient Egyptian human remains, presented in a respectful, professional manner designed to help us better understand and to celebrate the lives of people who were alive when the pyramids were still new.
Presenter: Stephen R. Phillips, Ph.D., is the Curatorial Research Coordinator in the Egyptian Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Dr. Phillips earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in the fields of biological anthropology, archaeology, and Egyptology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is listed with the Register of Professional Archaeologists. He has traveled extensively and participated in a wide range of archaeological excavations for more than 25 years, including fieldwork at Petra, Jordan; near Bordeaux in southwestern France; and in Egypt - at the Great Pyramids and at Saqqara.
