| At this moment in history, there is a painful divide separating people. We can’t stand idly by as so many need healing. We can serve the greater community and we can be open to discovering how best this service can be shared. We can take responsibility for others, which builds strength in ourselves and in our relationships. Each of us holds the power to bring peace and spread happiness. It’s in the positive energy we share that can cause changes to be made. | Yom HaZikaron, also referred to as Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day - was observed the evening of May 5 through May 6. We think about the six million Jews whose lives were taken in the Holocaust, and the heroic survivors and rescuers. We think about Israel and the state of the world. Although this song was produced six years ago, the words are more relevant than ever. The Jewish nation continues to survive in the darkest of times. Am Yisroel Chai! |
Dr. Charles Silow, Director, Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families, led a memorial service for Yom Hashoah at Meer. Each survivor lit a memorial candle to remember the six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust.

| Still reflecting on our volunteer appreciation event last week. I was standing at the entryway as the volunteers were leaving and many of them stopped to tell me they knew so many people there. That’s the definition of community – a place where we know each other and are glad to see familiar faces. That’s JSL. |
I recently had my own JSL community experience. A friend of my mother who I haven’t seen in decades moved into Fleischman and yesterday we had a chance to sit and catch up. I was glad to reconnect, glad to catch up, glad that she’s here with us. She said she loved JSL’s Yiddishkeit, loved that Dr. Silow did a Yom Hashoah remembrance in the lobby on Monday, and after a month or so she had already made wonderful friends. That really is JSL’s “special sauce,” isn’t it? We’re glad to see each other. We’re home. We’re family. We’re community.
Also, we’re a fun community where there is a lot going on. If you’re not already a JSL volunteer, we’d love to have you be part of it.

Edamame and Grilled Corn Salad
There is so much sweetness and flavor in grilled corn that it’s perfect on its own. But the additions come together quickly and, if possible, make it even more perfect. It’s spring/summer on a plate.
| A University of Michigan study found that older people are better at reasoning when it comes to social dilemmas and conflicts. When presented with various stories about conflict, they specifically are more adept at understanding different perspectives, suggesting compromises and coming up with several reasonable resolutions. | | |

So much of who we are today, we owe to our mothers.
Sending joy, love and best wishes to all the mothers at JSL and in our community everywhere, and those of blessed memory.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
Our Mothers’ Heirloom
Mother’s Day is one of those days that deserve to be celebrated daily. I wish to share the appreciation and soul connection my wife and I will forever have with our deceased mothers.
Both my mother and my wife’s mother, of blessed memories, savored the words of King David’s Book of Psalms and recited them daily. As they advanced in years, their love and passion to recite the sweet words of King David’s Psalms grew. It brought them tremendous peace and reassurance that life would unfold in the best way possible and in accordance with G-d’s will.
Our mothers passed away six months apart from one another. Both my wife and I, on separate occasions, and in different locations, requested of our siblings that we would like to inherit our mother’s book of Tehillim (Psalms). Today we often find ourselves sitting together quietly reciting from our mothers’ treasured Book of Psalms… the very same words our mothers recited and hopefully with a similar frame of mind.
May the sacred words of King David especially during these challenging times bring us and all those we know blessings of peace and salvation.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
