Archives Offer Glimpse into the Life of LGBTQ Activist Mary Audrey Gallagher, Mother of Danny Dromm

Happy Mother’s Day! Did you know that former New York City Council Member Danny Dromm’s mother, Mary Audrey Gallagher, was a celebrated LGBTQ+ activist in her own right? Gallagher helped found the Queens chapter of PFLAG in 1993 and served as PFLAG/Queens Hospitality Chairperson for many years. Later, during Dromm’s council race, she was pivotal to his success. “My mother knocked on over 1,500 doors to help me get elected,” Dromm said. “I truly believe she was the main reason I won.” In 2018, she even had a street named after her! She and Danny are pictured here during a 1995 PFLAG award ceremony.

You can learn more about Mary Audrey Gallagher through the Daniel Dromm Papers, part of the Archives' LGBTQ Collection.
