ROOTED IN DIVERSITY: National Hispanic Heritage Month | |
According to the 2022 USDA Census of Agriculture, there are 112,379 Hispanic producers across the United States. This accounts for 3.3% of the country's 3.4 million producers - and does not account for migrant and seasonal farmworkers! This Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), AgriSafe Network wants to celebrate all the Hispanic and Latinx workers in agriculture: thank you for the food, fuel, and fiber you provide to the world!
We are continually working to enhance our Spanish resources, and we are proud to announce that this is our second year offering live Spanish interpretation for all of our webinars during National Farm Safety and Health Week (recordings coming soon). AgriSafe has a dedicated Spanish resource page, and we are always looking to expand our resource list! If you have suggestions for an AgriSafe resource that you would like to see translated in Spanish (or another language), please email Vanessa Martinez.
Looking for other ways to engage with Hispanic Heritage Month? Check out the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services toolkit or the Smithsonian's Hispanic Heritage Month resource page.

Husker Harvest Days 2024
Four female producers from the Midwest came together in early September at the 2024 Husker Harvest Days in Nebraska to share insights on innovation, sustainability, and the diversity of roles within their farm families, farm businesses, and farm communities during the “Women in the Field” program.
AgriSafe's Community Health Director, Linda Emanuel, facilitated the coffee chat conversation as part of the “Finding Balance” series, which is a mental health initiative to equip communities with doable strategies to mitigate the effects of work/family/farm overload and stress.
AgriSafe would like to thank the University of Nebraska Medical Center Central States Center of Ag Safety and Health, Nebraska Women in Agriculture, and Farm Progress for their outreach support and being valuable partners in promoting agricultural safety and health!

SEPTEMBER HEALTH SPOTLIGHT: Healthy Aging Month
| |
Attention agricultural community: September is Healthy Aging Month, reminding us to focus on maintaining our health and well-being as we grow older. With the unique challenges of agricultural work and lifestyles, it is vital to adopt strategies that promote overall health.
Healthy aging is about more than just physical health; it is a holistic approach that encompasses mental, emotional, and social well-being. This September, take a moment to assess your habits and make a commitment to prioritize your health.
Healthy Aging Check-In: How many of the following items are you currently doing?
-
Physical Activity: Farming and agriculture are inherently physical, but it’s essential to diversify activities. Simple activities like stretching, walking, or even yoga can enhance mobility and reduce the risk of injury. (AgriSafe Yoga Resource and AgriSafe Pilates Resource)
-
Mental Stimulation: Whether it’s learning a new farming technique, taking up a hobby, or participating in community events, staying mentally active is crucial to aging healthily.
-
Balanced Diet: Seasonal produce from your own farm can be a fantastic way to ensure fresh and nutritious meals. Remember to stay hydrated, especially during busy harvest seasons. Replace sugary snacks with healthier options like nuts, yogurt, or fruits.
-
Mindfulness and Relaxation: Farming can be stressful, and it’s crucial to find ways to unwind. Practices like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking time to enjoy nature can significantly improve mental well-being.
-
Stay Proactive: Schedule routine visits with your health care provider to monitor health conditions, manage medications, and receive vaccinations. Preventative care is vital, and helps you catch potential issues early.
-
Social Interaction: Loneliness can impact mental health as we age. Strengthen your connections with family, friends, and fellow farmers. Consider joining or forming local agricultural groups or clubs.
