May means less pollen, more sun, season kickoffs, and our directory. I'm sure you anticipated that last one, lol. Yes, we are proofing and sending it off to the printers this week. We will have them in hand by May 22 and will begin distributing anywhere and everywhere. Make sure you grab one, if your office is high traffic, grab more! But, remember it will be online as well.

Our first attempt at a mini golf tournament was a great success and loads of fun. Congrats to the big winner, Gray Buffalo Consulting. Recognition to our runners up, Dawn Accounting Services, and sincere appreciation to all of our sponsors.

We are providing Narcan training from Worcester Goes Purple and a presentation from OP Chief of Police Tim Robinson on May 22 ar 1 at the library. All are invited! Then, June 11 from 12-1 we are offering a lunch presentation by Joe Tabeling of CQI Associates. Statewide, CQI partners with chambers to provide energy coops which lower your energy costs at home and at the office. $5 toward lunch gets you in and apart of the conversation and networking. Must RSVP for that.

Next on our event radar is another first, Pounding on the Pocomoke Invasive Species Fishing Tournament with weigh in and party in Byrd Park in Snow Hill. Blue catfish and snakehead fish are devastating our indigenous species and ecosystem. Maryland is doing a full court press for irradicating them from our waterways. Come and help! We will have several of our local environmental and natural resource nonprofits on hand as well as food and beverage offerings. Even if you're not fishing, stop by and learn more about these mean little buggers.

Staff-wise, it is with true sadness that we bid Rachael farewell and good luck on her new endeavor. She has done an amazing job, jumping straight into the fire and keeping it burning. She has promised to be our best ambassador and volunteer and we will hold her to it.

Go kick some May butt, people!

Local Vocals invade the Ocean Pines Yacht Club

The Yacht Club looked like a trip across the pond to jolly old England, complete with Union Jacks and Subway stations.

On Friday, April 19th, The Local Vocals of Ocean Pines, along with a couple of their good friends, presented The British Invasion to a packed house in the Ocean Pines Yacht Club banquet room. Conceived and directed by none other than Frank Pasqualino, The British Invasion included a collection of 44 hits and accompanying video footage from the cultural phenomenon of the mid-1960’s when rock and pop acts from the UK became popular in the United States.

The event was hosted by her highness, Donna Frankowski, who, in her role of Master of Ceremonies shared history, humor, and a bit of education about the British Invasion and the British Isles. In addition to some British delicacies that included cucumber sandwiches, beef wellington, fish & chips, shepherd’s pie, and bangers & mash, the audience of nearly 180 was treated to a broad variety of artists and their songs from 1963 to 1967. After kicking off the show with a medley of hits from the Beatles, the audience enjoyed songs from The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Zombies, The Dave Clark Five, Herman’s Hermits, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Cilla Black, and Donovan. Although the audience didn’t need any encouragement to sing along, they were invited several times to join the Local Vocals and Friends in a karaoke-style audience participation.

In addition to some other antics, the group invited one audience member up on stage to help out with their only dance number; “Do the Freddie” by Freddie and the Dreamers. The sell-out crowd clearly enjoyed the show and were on their feet dancing along with the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” finale.

The Local Vocals of Ocean Pines is a fledgling vocal group based in Ocean Pines. The group includes vocalists Donna Pasqualino, Dorothy Leslie, Jim Ulman, and Patrick Lehnerd, with Frank Pasqualino as Manager and Master of Technology. For this event, the Local Vocals were joined by fellow PineTones vocalists Stacy Hromanik and Deborah Airey. The Local Vocals look forward to lots of future shows just like this.
