National Infant Immunization Week



Dr. Sean Cullen discusses what parents should know about vaccination guidance for young children during National Infant Immunization Week on the WCM Kids Health Podcast. He gives an overview of the history of vaccine development and advocates for their safety and efficacy. Listen here!


Appointments & Promotions

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Corinne Catarozoli as Co-Director of the Behavioral Health Integration and Innovation Program effective May 1, 2024. Dr. Catarozoli is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in Clinical Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. As a leader in pediatric integrated care at WCM, Dr. Catarozoli has worked across inpatient and outpatient medical settings to embed evidence-based mental health services into the continuum of care for children. In her new role as Co-Director of the Behavioral Health Program, she will work with Dr. Cori Green to develop and execute the strategic plan for the pediatric mental health integration program. She will oversee a team of integrated mental health providers across a variety of medical settings and serve as the chief liaison between the WCM Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Psychiatry and spearhead ongoing clinical and educational initiatives. 

Education

Dr. Jennifer Salant has been selected as one of the six fellows in the 2024-2025 Healthcare Leadership Fellows Program! Her selection is a reflection of her ability to drive positive change within the healthcare industry.

Research

Dr. Nitya Gulati is a recipient of the 2024 Hyundai Young Investigator Grant for her project on Biomarkers of Response in Primary Mediastinal B-Cell lymphoma: Defining Tumor Microenvironment Signatures in the amount of $250,000.


Dr. Ashley Nelson is a recipient of a three year $100K grant from The Hartwell Foundation for her project titled, IgE-Mediated Processes as Potential Therapeutic Targets for Respiratory Virus Disease Progression in Asthma. She was also featured on the WCM Newsroom, read more here!

Dr. Melanie Gao (Fellow) received the 2024 Healthcare Disparities Research in Newborn Medicine.


Dr. Gao was also a recipient of the 2024 Marshall Klaus Neonatal-Perinatal Research Award for her project on, Maternal and Social Determinants of the Preterm Human Breast Milk Lipidome in the amount of $5,000.

Pediatric Fellows' Research in Progress takes place on the 4th Thursday of each month. Third and second year fellows present their ongoing academic scholarship work. This month's presenters were:

Advocacy

Ilina Ewen is a new Staff Associate for Children's Health leading advocacy and community engagement. She has previously served as Chief of Staff to the First Lady of North Carolina and a variety of roles in communications, advocacy, and brand strategy. She brings extensive experience as a champion for children's wellbeing in local, state, and federal arenas. Ilina has been an advocate for issues related to vaccine access, public education, food insecurity, literacy, and child neglect and maltreatment. She has a BA in History from the University of Virginia and an MS in Integrated Marketing Communications from Northwestern University. Ilina lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband of 24 years and enjoys visiting her sons in college in Wisconsin and Oregon.

Awards & Honors

Dr. David Lyden is a recipient of the Princess Lillian Foundation Award! He was inaugurated at ULiège the series of lectures and meetings in Belgium on the pre-metastatic nice concept. Dr. Lyden is internationally renowned for his pioneering research into the pre-metastatic niche and the biology of the exosome in the metastatic process. Created in 1958 by Princess Lilian de Réthy, the Foundation initially aimed to offer children with cardiovascular malformations the opportunity to benefit from pioneering interventions developed in the U.S.

Dr. Alisha Akinsete (Research Fellow) was awarded the Diversity in Lupus Research Postdoctoral Award from the Lupus Research Alliance for her project on, Delivery of Guideline Concordant Care and Outcomes in Children with Lupus Nephritis.

Dr. Joy Howell has been selected by the graduating class to receive the Tow Humanism in Medicine Award presented by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation at the Weill Cornell Medicine Convocation ceremony on May 15, 2024. The Foundation champions humanism in healthcare, which is defined as compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent care. Those honored by the Foundation with the Tow Award are expected to reflect these values in daily practice and to continuously strive to be exemplars of humanism in healthcare. 

Dr. Mark Souweidane of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center Neurosurgery received the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation Award (this was an in-person celebration for the award from 2020).

Colleagues have nominated and chosen Jennifer Goldsmith, RN, as the recipient of the Annual Nursing Award! This demonstrates her exceptional commitment to both patients and coworkers.  

Dr. Narissa Williams (Resident) received the NYP/Cornell Graduate Staff of the Month Award for April 2024! She has been one of the most well-respected residents in the pediatric program. Since starting the program, she has demonstrated excellent medical knowledge, strong leadership skills and dedication to the profession. Dr. Williams is never afraid to tackle the most complicated patients and consistently goes the extra mile to provide comprehensive care for her patients. 

Dr. Krithika Karthigeyan (Postdoctoral Associate) has been selected as a 2024 recipient of the Ritu Banga Healthcare Disparities Research Award! In line with a commitment to diversity and inclusion at Weill Cornell Medicine, the Ritu Banga Healthcare Disparities Research Award recognizes the tremendous research conducted by WCM investigators to address health disparities.

Announcements

The National Association of Epilepsy Centers has accredited NYP/Weill Cornell Pediatric Epilepsy Center under the leadership of Dr. Zachary Grinspan as a level 4 epilepsy center for 2024 and 2025. Our hospital name has been submitted to US News and World Report as an accredited level 4 epilepsy center in 2024. Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy. Read more here!

Dr. Sallie Permar participated in a panel discussion titled "Fireside Chat: Prevention of RSV in the Pediatric Population" at the World Vaccine Congress on April 2, 2024, in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Marisa Censani has been elected to the position of Vice President on the Executive Committee on the Obesity Medicine Association Board of Trustees. The Obesity Medicine Association is the largest organization of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers treating obesity and currently has over 5,000 members from the United States and internationally. She is currently finishing her 18 month term as OMA Secretary/Treasurer and is looking forward to starting the new position! Read more here!


Dr. Censani is also presenting at the upcoming AAFP Obesity CME for the Family Physician conference on the topic "Advancements in Pharmaceutical Management of Pediatric Obesity." Read more here!

Dr. Adin Nelson was recently elected the new coordinator-elect of the New York City Regional Pediatric Hospital Medicine Collaborative.

Dr. Nena Osorio traveled to Bulgaria for a week-long in-depth discussion of the country's healthcare system with the ABF's Board of Directors and management team. Her visit was widely covered by national and local media, and her background and involvement with Weill Cornell Medicine positively reflected on ABF’s intentions in the healthcare sector.

Dr. James Bussel gave Pediatric Grand Rounds at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Seattle Children's Hospital, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He also gave NIH Allergy-Immunology Grants Rounds.

Dr. Alexandra Huttle presented at the Research Methodology Conference on April 5, 2024 on Addressing a Mental Health Crisis: Youth Suicide Prevention in Pimary Care.

Dr. Joy Howell attended the AAMC GDI meeting as representing WCM and sharing important work with attendees. Dr. Howell collaborated with external colleagues to present a workshop highlighting a consultative model of peer mentorship for DEI leaders. She also presented her work on developing and delivering a Race, Equity and Social Justice Learning series within the Department of Pediatrics over the past four years. Both offerings were well received including acknowledgement by Dr. David Acosta, Chief Diversity Officer for AAMC. 

Dr. Chani Traube was a guest speaker at the Mexican Association of Pediatric Intensive Care where she presented on Delirium in Pediatric Critical Care on April 25, 2024.

Dr. Rachel Kowalsky spoke about a variety of subjects as an invited speaker, panel moderator, and keynote speaker at several institutions this month.

Dr. Tarik Zahouani gave Grand Round for the Department of Pediatrics at Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx on April 11, 2024 on The Utility of Cardiac Point of Care Ultrasound in the NICU.

Drs. Sallie Permar and Bernhard Kuhn attended the APSA/ ASCI/AAP meeting along with four WCM Pediatrics interested students. Learn more here!

Susan McKillop, Drs. Brooke Spector, and MacKenzi Preston participated at the 7th Weill Cornell Medicine, Transition-to-Residency (TTR) Internship Boot Camp. TTR is an interprofessional team-based course designed to consolidate and synthesize the clinical skills of our graduating fourth-year medical students in preparation for internship. Over two-weeks, our student work together with NYP nurses on interdisciplinary teams to rehearse clinical reasoning and medical decision making skills, reinforce teamwork skills, and practice high-yield procedural skills. 

Dr. Lillian Cohen, an expert in X & Y chromosome variations, in the Division of Medical Genetics has been approved for the Weill Cornell Medicine site to be part of the GALAXY Registry Consortium in Colorado.

 

 

Dr. Caitlin Williams' (Postdoctoral Associate) abstract was accepted at the 3rd Annual Weill Cornell Medicine Pulmonary Academic Day on March 29, 2024.

Medical students Sarah Chowdury and Alex Zhao presented their research in Denver, Colorado at the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting. Learn more here!

Peer Support Session for Pediatric Faculty

We are happy to announce that pediatric educators involved in a lawsuit or RCA will have access to confidential peer-to-peer support beginning in May. Our department now has 5 trained faculty members (more to be trained), who will be available to faculty for peer support. This program is modeled after the one the WCM ED operates. Anybody involved in a lawsuit or RCA will receive contact from one of these faculty members, who will offer short-term peer support, resources, and a sympathetic ear. Furthermore, faculty members can get in touch with Sandra Rolston for peer support with morbidities, QA reviews, keepsakes, and other matters!
