Icon Inspires ASOP Artists

Art teacher Joy chose fashion, textile and interior design icon Iris Apfel as an inspiration for her students who have been experimenting with portrait painting.

"I chose to teach my students about Iris Apfel because I have been a long admirer of her unconventional style and her colorful, fun personality.

"She 'accidentally' became an icon just for being herself. Since she passed recently at 102, I thought the younger generation should be introduced to this dynamic personality and fashion, textile and interior design icon.

"I was so impressed with the paintings my students created. I love them all, and I suspect she would have loved them as well."

Baby Chicks a Big Hit at School

There is nothing like a newborn, fuzzy chick to elicit big smiles!

Because the incubated eggs in Liz's science classroom did not hatch as planned, she brought in chicks for all the school's students to experience and enjoy.

The chicks spent one week at school, and then on a Friday made the trip home with Liz to live the good life in her chicken coop!

All Rise!

Students in Art's Current Events and Debate class participated in a mock trial last month, with Art wielding the gavel as Judge. The case, Billings v. Pearson, is a fictionalized trial based on real events. The case centers on the repercussions from school bullying.

Rowan and Joe took the roles of defense attorneys. Hailey took the role of plaintiff attorney. Carmine, Jake, Jaydin, Te, Franchesca and Elise took witness or support roles in the trial.

In the end, justice was served for the plaintiff!

ASOP Throws a Solar Eclipse Party

On April 8th, the moon slipped between Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking all of the sun's light for those in the "path of totality." In our area there was 90 percent totality, and the sky darkened and temperatures dropped at the time of peak coverage.

ASOP students and staff headed outside to view this amazing phenomenon with their own (protected) eyes! In between looking up at the sky, students enjoyed chalk drawing, bubble blowing, throwing the ball, and just hanging out with friends.

Spring KAP Testing

ASOP administers the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) in the spring of each school year. KAP is designed to support educators and policymakers in evaluating student learning. This standardized test is just one of the criteria that ASOP uses to drive curriculum and evaluate student performance.

Students in grades 4-8 and 10 took the KAP ELA and Math tests, while students in grades 5, 8 and 11 took the KAP Science test. Results for KAP testing will be available in the summer.

Great job to everyone who took the tests!
